ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. hm, I just realized
<andlabs>
while looking at external cases, I started focusing on modding external cases
<andlabs>
I did not yet consider *mounting* them

that's probably the easiest solution, if you have a case with at least 2 5.25" bays. those are actually getting hard to find these days
<Foone>
sorry for not replying. I've not done any 3d printing of enclosures: there are some on thingiverse, but printing something that big is rare, and I didn't see any that did more than one drive
<Foone>
the way I've done this in the past is by finding enclosures at junk stores that have at least 2 5.25" bays. for example, ones used by CD copiers

<Lord_Nightmare> Stilett0: didn't we find the datahseet or at least the chip type that creative labs used for the "ASP" on later sb16 and awe32 cards?
<Stilett0>
identifies it. "T6 (SB16 and some specific AWE32) is the only card where the 'Advanced Signal Processing' 12 MIPS CSP chip (CT-1748) is available. This CSP is a ST18932 DSP core with 16K of program RAM and 8k of data RAM."

<Stilett0> <Sarayan> I don't think I've ever seen a yamaha external effects chip on arcade boards
<Stilett0>
<Stilett0> I think someone had asked me to find a datasheet, something in the YSS series. Might have been someone from VOGONS circa 2002-2004 tho
<Stilett0>
I searched my records and I was thinking of July 2002, when I had been looking into the YSS225 (EP) which was the Effect Processor accompanying the OPL4. I don't think this lines up with anything arcade in MAME but it does line up with the research work I was doing at the time at VOGONS for projects like VDMSound.
<Stilett0>
I did end up sourcing the datasheet for the YSS225 from someone at Xilinx (weirdly enough) and the scan found online may very well originate from me :)
<Stilett0>
allegedly the ASP/CSP had its own Software Developer Kit from Creative, but I haven't found any evidence of that yet other than old memories at VOGONS

Foone: heh, I was also trying to do it on a budget, but I guess I'll have tod rop cash after all
<andlabs>
the rest of the fluxengine was very cheap
<andlabs>
I also couldn't bring myself to break a working unit so I was looking for broken ones
<andlabs>
and it turns out few people sell those
<andlabs>
or those that do really just use "can't test it" as an excuse to say "not working"
<andlabs>
thanks for that, ebay

if you just want the case and can supply your own power supply, I probably have at least one spare one in my storage. I can look next time I'm there

Lord_Nightmare: anything change with the situation involving the action replay PC? I'd still love to get my hands on it to complete this reverse engineering effort.
