<Lord_Nightmare> the .al format is the original alto font format and uses self-relative pointers and other weird voodoo
<Lord_Nightmare> the later two alto font formats are both bitblt based, which means more complexity but much more compact
<Lord_Nightmare> the oberon (niklaus wirth's weird pascal based machine thing and the language it runs) fonts seem to be based loosely on the .al format but much more cleaned up format-wise
