I want to get the oberon font format figured out as well, but that one is less well documented, despite the oberon source code being widely available

the .al format is the original alto font format and uses self-relative pointers and other weird voodoo

the later two alto font formats are both bitblt based, which means more complexity but much more compact

the oberon (niklaus wirth's weird pascal based machine thing and the language it runs) fonts seem to be based loosely on the .al format but much more cleaned up format-wise
