ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <mrspicy23> So the GEW12 is bendable though
<andlabs> cr1901_modern / ej5 nice, but at this point it's starting to look like I'm gonna need a bigger holder, not a smaller one =P

<mrspicy23> I'm talking about circuit bending though
mrspicy23 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Lord_Nightmare> I personally have a sort of low opinion of circuit bending, since a lot of people who do it have absolutely no idea why it 'works' and just connect wires to random pins and short them together
<Lord_Nightmare> and end up destroying valuable/rare chips in the process
<Lord_Nightmare> then start selling dozens of devices modded the same way
<Lord_Nightmare> which inevitably break the same way
<Lord_Nightmare> if you take the time to understand why something works the way it does, though, you can do 'circuit bending' in a safe way which won't damage the chips
<Lord_Nightmare> its more effort though, and may require making daughter-pcbs to mount the chips in so you can better control or gate the pins
<Lord_Nightmare> but the end result will be much more reliable in the long term
<Lord_Nightmare> so many old vintage speak and spells were destroyed for circuit bending
<Lord_Nightmare> and many didn't survive the procedure
<Lord_Nightmare> for instance, to properly mod a speak and spell, you could connect a bunch of analog switches to the various bus pins to disconnect and reconnect the bus to the vsm speech ROM in various ways
<Lord_Nightmare> instead of just using spdt switches which are very noisy and invite ESD damage
<Foone_> Lord_Nightmare: hello! are you around?
<Lord_Nightmare> yes
<Lord_Nightmare> I heard what you said earlier about the runfei and the card
<Foone_> ok cool!
<Lord_Nightmare> with the big mess going on in the world today I'm not sure when I'll be able to send it
<Foone_> I understand! let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
<cr1901_modern> mrspicy could at least wait for replies... I told them IRC is async
<andlabs> they left at 18:00
<andlabs> I'm going to guess they had to go somewher
<cr1901_modern> what's this "going somewhere" you refer to?
