<andlabs> I'm willing to use THIS chat protocol because I don't need ot sign up for a silly chat service for a one time tech support question
<andlabs> meanwhile I'm still holding off on signing up for matrix for mozilla because tehy aren't even in the mozilla IRC channels anymore
<cr1901_modern> My impression: the person who had the final say in removing mozilla's IRC network _really_ didn't like IRC
<Foone> they never got over it when microsoft comic chat support was dropped
<cr1901_modern> Poe's law rears its head :P
<andlabs> well now there are 300 people who will never get the help they need
<andlabs> thanks guys
<andlabs> firefox needs to be forcibly taken away from upper management and given tot he develoeprs
<andlabs> even if the developers are capitalists they aren't ... this
<andlabs> okay I guess I now have a flux engine qeustion if anyone has actually built one
<andlabs> because this is the point where I have to decide how many I make
<andlabs> Grounding
<andlabs> If you’re using a connector, the simplest thing to do is to bend up one of the unconnected pins and solder a short piece of wire to a GND pin on the board. Alternatively you’ll need to splice it into your drive’s power supply cable somehow. (The black one.)
<andlabs> I still don't understand what this is saying
<andlabs> does anyone have a picture?
<andlabs> I'm going to be using a connector
<cr1901_modern> It's saying that you need to connect drive ground and PSoC ground together
<cr1901_modern> you can either do that by providing ground through the gnd connections on the cable
<cr1901_modern> or connect the gnd of the psoc to the gnd of your floppy power supply
<cr1901_modern> providing ground to the floppy*

<andlabs> connections on the cable?
<andlabs> or connections on this thing?
<andlabs> and if one of the pins on this thing, does it matter which one? if so, why? that doesn't make sense to me...
<andlabs> *if not, why

<andlabs> yay the floppy drives finally came
<andlabs> starting to worry the 5.25" chasis I got won't be big enough but we'll find out tonight
<andlabs> may not need to worry about 3.5" chasis size on the other hand lol
<andlabs> this NEC drive is tiny
<ZrX-oMs> Encased floppydrive is a nono. You'll come to the realisation when you go through thousand floppies and start cleaning the heads.

<andlabs> I'm not sure how exposing the dirve to debris would make it less likely to get dirty, unless there's another threat I'm not realizing?
<ZrX-oMs> The most likely thing to make it dirty is old disks.
<andlabs> oh
<l_oliveira> old floppies are dangerous
<l_oliveira> you will contaminate the heads of the drive and it can lead to the destruction of other disks
<l_oliveira> when handling old disks be very careful with what you insert on the drive after you try to read a old dry disk
<l_oliveira> cleaning kits, have them handy or have the drive open so you can see the state of the heads after you take the disk out
<Lord_Nightmare> <ZrX-oMs> Did Kawai use ADPCM? - I don't know.
<l_oliveira> Oh yeah that's what I mean ZrX-oMs
<Lord_Nightmare> ZrX-oMs: do you have any Kawai sample disk images?
<ZrX-oMs> I have some QD disks that are for Kawai IIRC.
<ZrX-oMs> http://oms.wmhost.com/Not_so_bad.png - Same scratched disk but sampled in analog and with microstepping.
<l_oliveira> was able to recover stuff from the pictured disk?
<ZrX-oMs> Yes
<l_oliveira> How much of it were unrecoverable ?
<ZrX-oMs> There are 683 sectors in total and out of those 14 bad and 3 missing.
<l_oliveira> wow pretty good
<ZrX-oMs> Then again it took over 2 hours cleaning and careful retrying.
