ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths
<andlabs> finally opening those data discman discs now
<andlabs> ...the small form factor does not latch to the spindle of the sega cd 2
<andlabs> the disc flies off the spindle when finger-spinning it lol
<andlabs> so that's not going to work
<andlabs> I'm going to have to burn something

<cr1901_modern> whitequark: Ahhh, somehow I missed that global notice msg from you, thanks for pasting it :). Right now, I'd say about 20%-50% of regulars are missing from any given room I'm in, so I'm guessing more server woes today

<Lord_Nightmare> Foone: you didn't use the special laplink parallel cable?
<Lord_Nightmare> iirc the laplink parallel cable is a weird pinout with 4 bits in each direction, which map to 4 status pins on the other end
<Lord_Nightmare> so you can send a nybble at a time via SPP
<Lord_Nightmare> there's a pinout for how to make a cable like that SOMEWHERE
<Lord_Nightmare> iirc linux at least used to have support for it
<Lord_Nightmare> though a cable that uses PS/2 for bidir would be faster, and EPP or ECP for comms MUCH faster
<Lord_Nightmare> but that only works if the mb supports changing the direction on the parallel port data bus
<Lord_Nightmare> foone iirc there was a famous video game composer named "scatman" who i cannot find due to google poisoning
<Lord_Nightmare> iirc his collection of 800k mac disks was donated to a university who tried and failed to read them with a 1.44mb only new world mac and may have reformatted them due to stupidity
<Lord_Nightmare> i'm wondering if you have an older computer of his

<Foone> Lord_Nightmare: so I don't have a laplink cable handy, and also the machine I was coping onto has no parallel port.
<Foone> other than that, it's a good idea and someone else suggested it too
<cr1901_modern> bootstrap a kermit impl onto the machines? Or no serial port either?
<Foone> I could have waited and gotten a laplink cable from storage and a different computer to use, but I was basically trying to get anything that worked ASAP because I didn't know how long the machine would work or if it would ever turn on again
<Foone> and laplink won mainly because it was already on there, meaning I didn't have to write any data to the disk. I was afraid that was gonna fail, probably while updating the FAT, and I'd lose the whole disk
<Foone> or at least the partition
<andlabs> hey Foone did you see what I said last night about the data discman
<Foone> oh, yeah!
<andlabs> wonder library's gonna have to wait =P
<andlabs> but yes, got the thing out with your instructions; thanks
<Foone> that's a shame.
<andlabs> pretty sure EBXA is the format documented to work with this software but
