ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths
<kode54> TD-Linux: could be similar in design to the SC-VA system
<kode54> in that the component that synthesizes the audio, and the component that handles the display, are two separate processors/devices that have independent access to the MIDI command stream
<kode54> in the case of SC-VA, the core SC-8820 emulator is a synthesizer library that has no feedback API
<kode54> and the display is handled entirely by the plugin frontend
<kode54> could be your display is unplugged internally, or has otherwise died
<TD-Linux> I should probably also clarify that I'm trying to remotely debug someone else's sc-88 who purchased my midi card, and trying to figure out if my midi card is to blame.

<andlabs> ah
<protosphere> I wonder if being plugged into MIDI in A vs B makes a difference with the bars? I could try on my SC-88 later
<ValleyBell> TD-Linux: I think it has different bar modes.
<ValleyBell> I could try it when I get home later today.
<ValleyBell> I could also send you a MIDI that is displaying custom images using the bar visualization.

<andlabs> is the sound canvas turing complete
<andlabs> every time I see it it seems to be capable of more and more
<protosphere> TD-Linux: I see that behaviour if I use MIDI IN B on my SC-88
<protosphere> bars only display if I hit ALL
<protosphere> but music still plays fine
<TD-Linux> protosphere, ah is it MIDI IN A vs B?
<protosphere> seems to be
<protosphere> i get bars if i play into A
<protosphere> plug*
<protosphere> you can configure how the ports are mapped to a/b internally iirc
<protosphere> but that doesn't seem to affect the bars
<TD-Linux> thanks, I'll ask the person about that.
<TD-Linux> I can't reproduce it on my SC-55, so it must be new SC-88 behavior.
<protosphere> I think only SC-88 and beyond have 2 MIDI INs?
<TD-Linux> SC-55 has a second on the front
<TD-Linux> but they are labeled 1 and 2 rather than A and B
<protosphere> oh, but it's 1/2 rather than A/B, yeah
<protosphere> I think on the SC-88 you can connect both for some sort of expansion of capabilities
<protosphere> i forget exactly what
<TD-Linux> having double the bitrate would be cool
<TD-Linux> dual link MIDI
<TD-Linux> (maybe that's how the 32 part mode works?)
<protosphere> you connect both for 32 parts according to the manual, yes
<protosphere> pressing ALL displays the full 32 parts
<TD-Linux> now for the hardest part, describing this in japanese
<protosphere> for the normal mode it might only display the activity for the corresponding port
<protosphere> ah yes, it does
<protosphere> So selecting channel B01 displays all the port B parts
<protosphere> (in normal mode)
<protosphere> whereas selecting A-16 shows the port A parts

<ValleyBell> TD-Linux: When in ALL mode, the upper section is Part B and the lower section is Part A.
<ValleyBell> The SC-88 (and 88Pro) actually has 3 MIDI Ins: two at the back and one at the front
<ValleyBell> You can switch betwen using the "front MIDI In B" and the back "MIDI In B" using the options menu.
