<TerryxMasters>
I have a quick question. What's it mean when you go to update a project and it says "Communication deferred"? Cause everytime I do that it usually counts down from five seconds, but one project takes a five minute communication deferred period
<TerryxMasters>
everytime, and I always wonder why
<Deviantone>
if the project servers are busy they will back off the client
<TerryxMasters>
So that project is just always busy... hmm. Just surprising I suppose
<Deviantone>
some of the projects servers scream bloody mercy
NeuralMiner has joined #gridcoin
<TerryxMasters>
Yeah this is one of the projects that takes a metric shiz ton of time if you arent using GPU acceleration, and GPU acceleration slows the system to a crawl. If the amount of time and CPU resources it needs to counteract that is any indication =/
<Deviantone>
for gridcoin, it's generally not in your interest to cruch w/ CPU on a project that takes GPU
<[-SaRaFiNa-]>
Linked by Deviantone - Content type:
<TerryxMasters>
I agree, but they also crush the system to the point of instability because there's no way to adjust how much of the GPU is used. I tried doing one last night and my mouse pointer would barely move, the video I was watching in the background was unwatchable. IF I could use x number of cuda cores and x percentage of GPU memory, wed be good
<TerryxMasters>
but it's either 100% or nothing, so GPU is a no go
<Deviantone>
I set my boinc prefs to pause GPU when I'm using the comp
<Deviantone>
you should try that.. it works pretty well
<Deviantone>
It crunches when you are away on the GPU
<Deviantone>
and stops when you move mouse or keyboard
<TerryxMasters>
Thats true, but I've read horror stories about these things frying GPUs and if the system will primarily be idle, I'd rather not have it running 24/7 you know? =/

<Deviantone>
I can respect that.
<Deviantone>
My philosophy is I expect to get every ounce out of my HW.
<Deviantone>
Pretty much why I boinc
<Deviantone>
and my GPU doesn't get special treatment :)
<Deviantone>
it gets punished like the rest of the system
<TerryxMasters>
If I could tell it to utilize most, but not all of my GPU power then nearly the entire system would be used. But boinc was not it's primary purpose, it's just something to run when I'm not using it, etc.
<TerryxMasters>
Just sucks that some of it has to go to waste in this case

well if the specific number doesnt matter then idc which CPID its under
<TerryxMasters>
The only problem (outside of getting paid =P) that I have left is that the Magnitude still says 0. This is after sending my beacon and verifying I showed up in the network

Anyone nearby to UC Berkely? Feel like talking to them about gridcoin? Haha
<shaarad>
customminer, interested in contributing to my small tool?
<chessy>
I am totally confused, I will give up this gridcoin
<Sander96>
ok
<Sander96>
It's way better to ask instead of giving up
<Sander96>
but hey, whatever floats your boat
<TerryxMasters>
actually
<TerryxMasters>
its better to give up and give us all your gridcoins
<TerryxMasters>
at least thats what it says in the rules.
<chessy>
Tell me ONE thing. I am waiting for starting coins from faucets, pool etc, still nothing. When I mine basic LTC one week I earn tousands when i exchanging
<chessy>
why the people should use this coin ?
<Sander96>
why would you need starting coins
<Sander96>
if you're doing the pool
<Sander96>
And why should people use this coin?
<Sander96>
Well, if you know what Gridcoin us that should be pretty clear
<Auti2>
its not an altcoin you are trying to profit from
<VenomGhost>
Those mad GRCs... I'll gladly accept them
<Auti2>
at least im not
<chessy>
My comp and gpus worked all day, and my mag is still very low in pool. When i have in my wallet for example 1000 GRC, and my mag is 100+ then i got payouts regulary
<chessy>
then this is ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, not about science
<Sander96>
our business?
<Sander96>
what business?
<Sander96>
You're not making any sense
<Sander96>
Mag will be the exact same, pool or solo
<Sander96>
so don't go solo for higher mag
<VenomGhost>
Did you join every project in team Gridcoin?
<Sander96>
your CPU and GPU need to work at least a month before you'll have your final magnitude, so switching is even worse for your magnitude
<Sander96>
Just stay in the pool
<chessy>
Yes, but i lost my old wallet
<chessy>
and now i have to start with 0 coins
<Sander96>
you didn't lose it
<Sander96>
you didn't back it up
<Sander96>
it's still where it would've been if you had backed it up
<Sander96>
Don't blame this coin for your own mistakes
<VenomGhost>
Slow but certainly works budy so dont sweat it
<TerryxMasters>
Actually I'm glad he mentioned the mag thing. This is my third day mining, I've got a beacon out and everything in the NN etc. Should I still have 0 Mag?
<Auti2>
I didnt back up my wallet either and i lost it too, and restarting this is very frustrating since its not very straight forward to get payouts again
<TerryxMasters>
in the wallet app anyhow
<Sander96>
What does list cpids show TerryxMasters?
<Sander96>
so in console: list cpids
<Sander96>
don't paste here btw
<chessy>
Yes, it was my mistake, but its unfair when somebody loosing coins then have wait for faucets, pools etc.
<Sander96>
just tell me if it shows all your projects
<Sander96>
it's not unfair
<Sander96>
if you had come in here
<TerryxMasters>
list cpids shows the cpid is the same across all four projects, RAC is high on two but too low on the other two
<Sander96>
and said, I need some starting coins, can someone help me out
<Auti2>
i didnt send beacon, i got 0.1grc from a faucet and I managed to get 272grc block, pls someone explain
<Sander96>
I would've given you some coins
<Gary760>
You might have to wait for the NN to update.
<Auti2>
I joined the pool and my mag is slowly but surely rising
<spassbold>
yes
<Auti2>
is Peppernrino here?

<chessy>
Auti2 and what should I do? I cant do on those projects, rather on GPU, but I afraid the most popular GPU projects dont increase much MAG, right?
<Auti2>
view the gridcoin projects leaderboard and find a project with fairly low user count and low rac, but still enough work, its also trial and error to find best projects for you
<Auti2>
the pool is good because it shows each projects earnings if you are after that
<Auti2>
But I guess people mainly do for reasons boinc is done anyway, gridcoin is just a bonus
<Auti2>
do this*
<chessy>
Auti2 I am contributing on projects since 14-15 yrs
<chessy>
Auti2 this would be really bonus... searched WCG on pool, is there anywhere?
<Auti2>
someone who knows better than me please let him know
<spassbold>
WCG is not available on the pool
<chessy>
spassbold reason ?
<spassbold>
technical reasons
<spassbold>
it is different in some way than other projects and because of this cannot easily be added to the account manager of the pool
<chessy>
spasbold mostly i working on Scripps projects, but now they are detached.. i worked on WCG 24/7 and now is missing in pool.. but i will wait for balancing my wallet, and i am not so optimistic. hope the best

the bitcoiners running their hardware for rewards are pretty much the only thing bitcoin has at this point
<fkinglag>
sure, the idea of decentralization lays within the intrinsic value of BTC (so that contributes to price)
<customminer>
I don't even think there's that many individuals mining anymore..
<fkinglag>
yeah customminer!
<customminer>
it's all centralized ASIC mining operations instead of individual computers
<fkinglag>
the pools are kinda sorta the only way out of that demise
<fkinglag>
and I don't even know who has all the hashing power these days
<fkinglag>
I haven't been looking/analyzing
<customminer>
ASIC mining operations and pools, hence a single room full of chinese mining operators and pool admins being fooled by blockstream into following core's dev roadmap forces the bitcoin network to follow core. Kinda like a 51% attack
