<[-SaRaFiNa-]>
Linked by coldgn - How to recover data after reinstalling windows?
<CoinFlare>
Actually now that I think about it: Do you actually have to back up your wallet when you get grc? Or is the wallet more like a link to your account ID? - so that even an early backup is enough proof of your "account"?
<shaarad>
No, they say if you lose wallet.dat, you lose all your GRC
<CoinFlare>
All the transactions are in the network, right? So erhm... do you need to re-backup it or is one backup enough?
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: An early backup is enough if you do not create new addresses
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: But you should do more backups and save those somewhere else in case of corruption
<CoinFlare>
Ah, right - of course you would need the addresses, yes, makes sense
<shaarad>
Even I had felt that CoinFlare
<shaarad>
but can't you create new addresses
<shaarad>
and update those in whatever your sources of income are?
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: You can create new addresses
<shaarad>
loke gridpool?
<shaarad>
like*
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: I dont get the question ;)
<CoinFlare>
the wallet.dat has the proof of your old addresses, those that you have already gotten incoming transactions on
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: You can change your address within the pool
<shaarad>
I mean, we have set the wallet address in pool.gridcoin.co profile, right?
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: Yes and you can change it whenever you wish to
<shaarad>
we can create a new address later and update the address on the pool profile
<CoinFlare>
Yes yes, but we were talking about martinholly167 who lost his GRC
<shaarad>
I mean it's not mandatory to backup the wallet each time you create a new address. Correct me if I am wrong
<shaarad>
Yes, that case is different
<shaarad>
he has lost the wallet.dat primary copy itself
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: Once you create a new address you should backup your wallet
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: This has nothing to do with the pool
<shaarad>
pool was just an example
<shaarad>
after all, address is just one way money can enter your wallet, right?
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: No, addresses ARE your wallet
<shaarad>
oh yes, getting it a bit now
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: The wallet software only interprets what is storen on your public keys aka addresses
<shaarad>
man, I want to understand this thing thoroughly now

<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: (I am on the road without stable connection)
<shaarad>

<coldgn>
A question... what will happen to those 30k GRC in case the wallet is not reclaimed?
<shaarad>
poof! they will be gone
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: Those 30k are lost forever then
<shaarad>
it's like burning paper money I gueess
<shaarad>
Yes
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: They will exist but nobody can move those ever again
<shaarad>
that's bad

hmm
<CoinFlare>

<shaarad>
hi vega30000
<vega30000>
everything save ?
<CoinFlare>
Actually that is a very good point shaarad, a backup strategy is not actually a worthwhile strategy if it doesn't include a way to restore what was backed up. So many people forget that last part and just feel good about their backups until one day they actually have to try to use them
<shaarad>
Yes
<shaarad>
Another thing is, you need to update all your backed up copies of wallet.dat after you encrypt the wallet
<shaarad>
or even change the passphrase I guess
<shaarad>
The unencrypted wallet.dat s will be obsolete after you encrypt your wallet
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: I am not sure whether you can access encrypted addresses if you have a former backup that was not encrypted
<vega30000>
i need only one wallet.dat backup to restare my wallet
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: And no you can not do that via gui
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: Yes one backup is enough that contains all your adresses or private keys
<shaarad>
I have read it somewhere that you should update all your backed up wallet.dats with the encrypted primary dat file
<shaarad>
Changing topic a bit, I would really like to see how each of my host is doing in the pool over time
<IrcTg_Bot1>
<Quezacoatl>: Well if I understand it right you have a security issue if you have an unencrypted backup
<shaarad>
right now we just see the latest values of Mag etc in the pool
<shaarad>
IrcTg_Bot1, that can be possible from that perspective as ell
