Idea just popped in my head, so how about some software that converts ipfs links/hashes to a snowcrash (i.4cdn.org/wsr/1451185202395.jpg ), and when someone opens the image with the program/browser extension on, it auto download/ lets the user who viewed the image to become a peer of the files
<Guest74376>
Just an idea

What does the command "ipfs add --only-hash" do exactly? "Only chunk and hash - do not write to disk" is the help message. Does this mean the file is added to the ipfs swarm but not written to the ~/.ipfs/blocks directory?
<Kubuxu>
peteyg: Only chunk and hash - do not write to disk"

I think it just shows it, but you can combine it with pinning and so on.

I don't think so, you could scan blocks in your storage but it is only your storage.

Yea, not my prob.

Still here, still crawling. My ipfs explorer has now stumbled upon blogs, pokemon pictures and - this being the internet - porn. What shall it find next? I'm actually surprised I've not uncovered any stash of copyright infringement yet, but I expect someone has inserted a folder full of MP3s somewhere.
<ansuz>
the porn is probably copyrighted
<ansuz>
most is
<Codebird>
The mystery is exciting.
<Codebird>
A lot of this is impossible to retrieve though.
<The_8472>
how are you crawling?
joshbuddy has joined #ipfs
<Codebird>
Using google queries with 'site:gateway.ipfs.io' to get starting points. Following links from there.
<Codebird>
Got a basic script that does it.
<The_8472>
ah
<The_8472>
might want to google for other gateways too
<Codebird>
Is there a good place to find information about things like caching policies?
<Codebird>
Because if my node is storing everything that this script accesses... well, I might be single-handedly ensuring a lot of things get retained.
<whyrusleeping>
Codebird: thats awesome, lol
<ansuz>
whose caching policies?
<ansuz>
lgierth is responsible for running garbage collection when the ipfs.io gateways fill up their disk space
<ansuz>
