Hey, I'm working on the Python client for the api. The command 'repo init' is listed in the core api spec, but I'm wondering if it should be implemented at all. Someone else I'm working with was already told not to worry about 'node start/stop' so I was thinking that 'repo init' would never be needed if a node is always running.
<lgierth>
resoley: yeah don't worry about it -- we're gonna clarify the core api a lot in the next couple of weeks

Hey, so my team at IBM has been working on py-ipfs-api, and we just got approval from legal to contribute our code to the public project.
<ckwaldon>
We've spent quite a while on it, so the changes are substantial. We've documented all of the modules, written unit tests for almost everything, implemented missing core spec functionality, and written functional tests.
<lgierth>
<3<3<3
<lgierth>
that sounds amazing
<ckwaldon>
We want to open some PRs, but most of our work depends on itself. Would you prefer a monolithic PR that passes all tests, or a sequence of smaller PRs that must be accepted in the right order?
<whyrusleeping>
ckwaldon: i'd love a single PR with logically broken up commits
<whyrusleeping>
if you can
<lgierth>
good question -- there hasn't been so much movement in the existing py-ipfs-api, but recently people stepped up to work on it
<lgierth>
and there's potential for collaboration with BigchainDB/IPDB -- they've put a bit of work into py-ipld
<ckwaldon>
@whyrusleeping: we can do that, unless @lgierth is about to tell me not to...
<lgierth>
what whyrusleeping said! :)
* whyrusleeping
deletes the '/kick lgierth' he had typed
<lgierth>
i'm just pointing out other python/ipfs-ish work :)
<ckwaldon>
Okay. We'll try to have it out the door in the next 2 hours or so.

<apiarian>
is there a way to detect that the go-ipfs daemon is behind a double nat and will not be able to upload new things? could we add a check and maybe a warning at startup?
<jkh>
apiarian: not sure that’s always true through
<jkh>
err, though
<jkh>
I’ve successfully used ipfs to share content behind 3 and even 4 levels of NATing
<apiarian>
hmm, then perhaps a check that tests that sharing content is actually working?
<apiarian>
though, how would one do that without somehow forcing an external node to try to pull the content?

perhaps by creating a small unique object and then requesting it from a public gateway?
<jkh>
well, notionally any pub/sub protocol could also do this on top of ipfs
<jkh>
e.g. if you need reliable publishing then you do the small object check yourself
<jkh>
and if it fails you fall back to bittorrent or some other publishing method

<lgierth>
the thing with NATs is that the implementations of uPnP and NAT-PMP on routers is usually somewhere on the scale between only-slightly-broken and broken-beyond-hope
<lgierth>
so for example ipfs might be able to punch a hole, but the routers forgets about it after a few minutes
<Nat>
yeah i'm pretty messed up
<lgierth>
:)
<Nat>
:D
<apiarian>
right, so less of a "is it a double nat" and more of a "can i get my data out" check?
<lgierth>
you should usually be able to connect out fine
<lgierth>
issues with broken NATs arise when others try to connect in
<apiarian>
right
<apiarian>
that's what i mean by "get the data out"
<lgierth>
the safe bet is port forwarding on tcp/4001
<apiarian>
so make an object and see if others can get it
<lgierth>
port forwarding is obviously less than ideal :)
