Simple things like OTR instead of TLS for handshake would seemingly go a long way... But I know I'm beating a dead horse in saying it.

ipfs question: if i am the one uploading the file, do i have to pin it, so that it sticks forever?
<drastik>
or does the hash exists forever as long as the file is on the computer?

anyone?
<mactrent>
drastik: I think it lasts for as long as your node is online. It's functionally the same as if you'd pinned it. I could be wrong, though. :P
<drastik>
if i had downtime and then get back online would i have to remake the hashes or they should get back online too?
<drastik>
also can anyone confirm mactrent? ty for responding btw

what?
<M-Shrike>
How do I use `ipfs name publish` when `/ipns` is mounted?
<mactrent>
Sorry, typo. Session's messed up.
<drastik>
np
<drastik>
what did you want to say tho?
<mactrent>
In theory, anybody that asks for it after your host is back up gets it.
<mactrent>
So it reappears on the network as your node does.
<drastik>
are there any problems in practice?
<mactrent>
I'm afraid I haven't tested enough to know. I would guess it's working as implemented.
<drastik>
oh great then
<drastik>
thanks you the help

I'm seriously thinking to use IPFS in my developing product and I had some question compared to IPFS protocol
<Draikh>
I've read the WP but I didn't really understand if my files hosted on IPFS are permanent?
<Draikh>
Are they?
<Draikh>
If a node hosting my files disconnect from the network can I still access those files?
<deltab>
each node has its own repository
<deltab>
you can put files into and read them from your own node's repository
<ion>
As long as your local node or another node you can reach has the data, you can get it
<deltab>
if you request a file that isn't in the repo, the node will look for other nodes that do have it, and download it into the local copy
<deltab>
er, local repo
<Draikh>
So IPFS isn't distributed and redundant, right?
<deltab>
from there it's available to other nodes
Combined2857 has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<Draikh>
Is Filecoin working?
<deltab>
aiui, filecoin will be developed later this year
<mactrent>
Draikh: Simple answer: it's redundant if an only if another node has 'pinned' your content into their repo, which filecoin would be one incentive to do. I don't know if it's working, though.
<mactrent>
^ see above.
<Draikh>
Thanks guys
<Codebird>
If another node has pinned, or if another node has viewed it and still has it in the store.
<Codebird>
Which is not guaranteed, but for popular files is highly likely.
Draikh has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<mactrent>
Ah, right. I meant long-term, but that's true, Codebir.
jedahan has joined #ipfs
<Codebird>
Right. I think the intended use is that you make sure that you have the files pinned at least *somewhere* once.
<Codebird>
But then when there is a need, everyone downloading the objects also becomes a new host - so you don't get hammered with a load spike, no matter how many people want it.
<Codebird>
Sort of like bittorrent, except with a rather more elegent structure beneath to organise the data.

<kpcyrd>
can somebody send me a curl command for pinning a file over 127.0.0.1:5001 ?
f[x] has joined #ipfs
<kpcyrd>
ok, I've managed to revive the link that was down, the objects transfered to other gateways nicely, yet, I can't get the file on the gateway I actually want it from (to pin it afterwards).
<kpcyrd>
I've requested the file on the gateway before it was easily available on the network, the only peer was my local laptop, which firewall seems to be too strict.
<kpcyrd>
I'm afraid the gateway is sort of stuck in a bad state for that file now
