<davidar> hi JesseW (IRC) :)
<JesseW> davidar: do you happen to know (or have links to) any detail about the logging system in go-ipfs?

<haad> dignifiedquire: doesn't need to be that package per se, I just need something that implements fs API so that I can save "files" in the browser like I would in nodejs

<haad> dignifiedquire: any pointers to where to take alook at an example/api?
<dignifiedquire> haad: https://github.com/ipfs/js-ipfs-repo/tree/rxjs/src fs-store and idb-store have the exact same api

<victorbjelkholm> whyrusleeping, I remember seeing a gx-node around somewhere, or did I just dream about that?

<whyrusleeping> victorbjelkholm: its around somewhere, but i dont think its seen much love lately
<victorbjelkholm> whyrusleeping, meh, would be easier to start a new one you say?
<whyrusleeping> probably
<whyrusleeping> implementing a gx subtool is quite easy
<whyrusleeping> it can be a shell script
<victorbjelkholm> whyrusleeping, thanks for the link, I'll take a look

<M-flyingzumwalt> jbenet did you look at JPEG2000 while planning ipld-image?
<jbenet> M-flyingzumwalt:
<jbenet> not sure they did (i didnt make it), they probably did? not use?
<jbenet> sure*
<M-flyingzumwalt> J2K is the archival standard for doing similar stuff. Also, IIIF is a related project they should know about. I'll tap them.
<M-flyingzumwalt> jbenet cool. I'll touch base with jonnor about it.
<Ulises[m]> hey
<Ulises[m]> quick question
<Ulises[m]> has anybody written a distributed DB on top of matrix?
<Ulises[m]> apologies for the silly question, I'm still new to matrix, and so on
<ckwaldon> Not on matrix, to my knowledge, but you should check out OrbitDB
<M-oddvar> Ulises: I don't think so
<M-oddvar> although matrix in itself is kinda a distributed DB :)
<M-oddvar> all we're doing is exchanging JSON-blobs :)
<Ulises[m]> well, that's what I was thinking
<Ulises[m]> if you replace the word "client" with "mysql node" or somesuch
<M-oddvar> indeed
<Ulises[m]> you have an insta-distributed DB (modulo the details)
<M-oddvar> it just happens that most clients are focused on the messaging/VoIP aspect
<Ulises[m]> so I was wondering if this had been implemented, even if as a fun POC
<Ulises[m]> right
<M-oddvar> Ulises: yeah that would be very cool
<Ulises[m]> (just checked orbitdb, looks neat!)
<M-oddvar> AFAIK there's not been a POC dont
<M-oddvar> *done
<Ulises[m]> you still have the problem of conflict resolution mind you, but yeah, could go with last-write wins or whatever
<Ulises[m]> question: I've not seen much in terms of what happens when you have a netsplit or a node goes offline
<Ulises[m]> where could I read more?
<jbenet> M-flyingzumwalt btw we met with @jonnor and others from The Grid a few months ago. (cc @haad)
<M-oddvar> Ulises: http://matrix.org/#about is a good start
<davidar> Ulises: it's much less abrupt than irc netsplits, chat history just gets merged back together once the servers get back into contact :)
<haad> Ulises[m]: update the readme just now to give an idea of the available data stores (models): https://github.com/haadcode/orbit-db#data-stores
<haad> documentation very much WIP, if you have any questions, let me know and I'd be happy to help
<Ulises[m]> thanks haad
<haad> np
<Ulises[m]> so, I came in here by mere chance

<Lapin0t> anyone?
<Kubuxu> Lapin0t: we are currently on meetup in Lisbon
<Lapin0t> aah okay
<Kubuxu> that is awesome work and I think it will be even easier to get done with native IPLD support in IPFS and pub-sub
chriscool has joined #ipfs
<Kubuxu> this is something we want to put priority in next 3 months
<Kubuxu> Lapin0t: take a look at https://github.com/whyrusleeping/iptb
<Kubuxu> we use it in our testbed
<Lapin0t> yes exactly, as said i couldn't test a lot but i feel ipns is quite slow
<Lapin0t> nice I didn't see iptb, it's exactly what I need
<Kubuxu> ipns is quite slow (there is 1m cache on it also), that is why we will be working on pub-sub
<Lapin0t> cool, I will follow that closely (this is related with interaction with the matrix protocol right?)
<Lapin0t> I mean, is the pub-sub project a part of the matrix integration project or is will the pub-sub protocol be completely different?
<Kubuxu> We are working on our own ipfs pub-sub protocol.
<Lapin0t> ok
<Kubuxu> plan is to define API for apps to use and then iteratively improve the protocol itself.
<Lapin0t> this kind of feature would definitely enable awesome apps (I am still searching for some webtorrent like thing but with live streaming, it would surely be possible with fast/realtime apub-sub)

<M-flyingzumwalt> daviddias (IRC): the people who requested a js-ipfs tutorial said that they just want to see how to 1) open up a session, 2) write blocks to the dag, and 3) retrieve IPLD descriptors. Basically the equivalent of the "Usage" section from the hypercore Readme https://github.com/mafintosh/hypercore

<Lapin0t> M-flyingzumwalt: not really ;) I live in Lyon (france)

<M-flyingzumwalt> Lapin0t (IRC): ok. nicola and haad are going to be talking about ipfs pubsub in a few minutes. They're not familiar with the details of the matrix pubsub.
<M-flyingzumwalt> If you were here we would have roped you in!
<M-flyingzumwalt> I'll encourage them to put info on IRC while they converse
<Lapin0t> actually me neither! I just read a bit through their doc and I saw that there was a matrix/ipfs integration discussion on ipfs/notes

<ipfsbot> js-ipfs/master 56f2839 David Dias: Merge pull request #355 from ipfs/fix-build...
<Lapin0t> (but I am interesed by this things a lot so I will document myself)
<M-flyingzumwalt> Ah. Ok. In that case, the answer is no -- the conversations about ipfs pubsub are not part of the matrix integration discussion (yet). Those are currently separate conversations. AFAIK, the matrix integration is mainly about Matrix using IPFS for file sharing.
<Lapin0t> ok

<haad> Lapin0t: take a look at orbit-db (link above), it's CRDTs on top of IPFS. and that's on top of ipfs-log, much like the hashgraph you describe in your notes in the issue you opened. the difference is that none of that is consensus-bassed, it's eventually consistent. pubsub part is currently a centralized server which is what we're trying to remove with ipfs-pubsub.

<Lapin0t> haad: I read a bit about that orbit-db but i will dig into it now that I have some more experience of dbs with ipfs (and crdt are really cool too, it's really complementary to a consensus-based db)

<ucb> apologies for the potentially silly question, but what is the relationship between IPFS and matrix?
neuthral_ has joined #ipfs
neuthral has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<M-flyingzumwalt> ucb they're separate projects that both work on decentralized technologies. Matrix is focused on creating a decentralized system that bridges messaging/chat systems. IPFS is a protocol for making the WWW content-addressed instead of location-addressed -- it uses crypto hashes and merkle dags where the conventional web uses IP addresses.
<Lapin0t> as far as I know: none but some people talked about integrations between both systems (as matrix guys are fond of integrations!).. more about that: https://github.com/ipfs/notes/issues/42
<ucb> brilliant, that clarifies things for me quite greatly
<ucb> I did see Kademlia, etc. mentioned in IPFS, so I figured there was a bit of naming/routing there
<ucb> but I wasn't sure how both interacted (if at all)
<ucb> FWIW, I learnt about IPFS when investigating matrix
<ucb> hence my question :)
<M-flyingzumwalt> The integration topic is about allowing matrix users to pass around files in a decentralized fashion -- so that a matrix message can reference a file in IPFS, removing any need for a file server.
<M-flyingzumwalt> there is also overlap in some of the tech used by both projects. most of that tech is being bundled into a protocol (and set of implementations) called libp2p https://github.com/ipfs/specs/tree/master/libp2p
<ucb> oh, nice
j12t has joined #ipfs
<sametsisartenep> libp2p is amazing

<ucb> quick question: say a node goes offline, a file is deleted in the node, and then it goes online again (netsplit or proper offline)
<ucb> what does the node do when it comes back online?
<ucb> propagate the delete, or get the file back from other nodes?
<M-flyingzumwalt> ucb if you have "pinned" the file on the server then it will pull it from other nodes. Propagating Deletes is a more complicated topic.
<ucb> right, that's why I asked
<ucb> IIUC in matrix conflicts are passed on to the clients
<ucb> I wonder how these are resolved (if at all) with ipfs
<richardlitt> ucb: Might be a good question for ipfs/faq, even if we answer it here.
<ucb> certainly!
<richardlitt> I'm sure others will ask this. Want to open an issue for it? Github.com/ipfs/faq/issues/new
<ucb> unless you're suggesting I should go and add it :)
<ucb> kk

<ReactorScram> I lagged out somehow... Yesterday I transferred some files from my home to work using IPFS. Today I am doing the same but I can't get "pin add" at work to work
<ReactorScram> I was curious if this is common. The files appear on the public gateway just fine. I'm using 0.4.2 at work
<Kubuxu> ReactorScram: try updating to 0.4.3-rc1
<Kubuxu> 0.4.2 is really buggy in transfer
<ReactorScram> Kubuxu: ok
<ReactorScram> Do I need Go for that or is there a binary?

<Kubuxu> there is binary at dist.ipfs.io
<ReactorScram> thanks
<Kubuxu> also try doing `ipfs refs -r HASH` before pinning, there is small problem with pinning big files without them being already local (this is something we are still working on).
<Kubuxu> but try pin it first

<ReactorScram> while upgrading from 0.4.2 to 0.4.3-rc
<Kubuxu> ReactorScram: what was the problem with fs-repo-migration?
<ReactorScram> Kubuxu: It said it didn't have permissions to rename .go-ipfs to .ipfs
<Kubuxu> whyrusleeping: ^^ do you know that?
<ReactorScram> or access denied or something. I tried running from both Cygwin and Git Bash, same error. Not sure if that affects it
<Lapin0t> jbenet: it's just tooling but do you know https://hackmd.io ? It's a much better makdown-based collaborative editing software
<ReactorScram> > ipfs migration: migration 1 to 2 failed: rename C:\Users\User/.go-ipfs C:\Users\User/.ipfs: Access is denied.
<Lapin0t> (saying that because etherpad bugged me for a while and I see you typing mardown in that pad)

<ReactorScram> I already deleted it and redid ipfs init but I can delete .go-ipfs anyway
<ReactorScram> oh it's not there anyway
<Kubuxu> it might be hidden

flicko has joined #ipfs
<flicko> hello guys
<JosiahHaswell[m]> @flicko hey
<flicko> Is there any way to search or browse ipfs through the web interface?
<flicko> I'm on windows so I can't just mount it
<flicko> and using commands is cumbersome
<ReactorScram> I don't see what's really wrong with torrent tech apart from the sites being vulnerable
<ReactorScram> And that I have no idea how I would actually make a torrent if I wanted to
<flicko> I think sites being vulnerable was the main thing Sunde was talking about
<ReactorScram> I guess IPNS / IPFS can help that some but you can't run dynamic sites on neither torrent nor IPFS
<flicko> And ipfs could solve that by essentially making index resilient by storing multiple copies of the index on all connected machines
<ReactorScram> I2P offers better anonymity if you need it, but it's still torrenting
<ReactorScram> yeah but they said they basically already do that
<ReactorScram> with magnet links
<flicko> Why dynamic site, where you'd just need a directory structure with .torrent files in it +some description file for each torrent?
<ReactorScram> Because someone has to update it every time a new TV shwo episode comes out
<ReactorScram> And it's really annoying when your gf wants to watch TV and you're a week behind
<flicko> Well, all we need is ability to upload to specific hash.
<ReactorScram> Well that is IPNS and it solves it by giving the hash to whoever has the private key
<flicko> Or setting up a bot which would dl from "user hashes"
<okket> funny that the first p2p software (napster, emule) had search included, it was slow, but worked and was decentralized
<ReactorScram> You can still subpoena the person with the keys or the server running the bot
<lgierth> hey, it would be great if you could carry this somewhere else -- i trust you have the best intentions but others who think IPFS is about torrenting will take it as an encouragement
<ReactorScram> ok
<ReactorScram> well some torrents are legal too... but ubuntu rarely complains about being shut down
<flicko> Okay. Back to my original question
<lgierth> thanks! no offense meant, we're just very careful with keeping this community healthy
<flicko> Is there any way to search or browse ipfs through the web interface?
<ReactorScram> yeah I don't know of any search
<flicko> I'm on windows so I can't just mount it
<ReactorScram> Maybe someone will make a centralized "Google For IPFS" one day
<crankylinuxuser> you can't ls /ipfs anyways. Because all 2^350 keys exist; you have to know the hash to know which data to request form the network
<ReactorScram> otherwise it's just guessing random hashes and ~100% being 404
<flicko> Yeah, but you can list hashes of connected peers
<flicko> That's where you start
<ReactorScram> that would be neat
<crankylinuxuser> True, that, but the Multihash points towards file and directory hashes, which in turn point to block hashes. I have quite a few things that are only partially complete, because I couldnt obtain all the blocks from the network.
<crankylinuxuser> And there's no way to my knowledge, to figure out if a block is part of a root multihash...
<ReactorScram> Not from the block itself, but the IPFS peer knows, right? It has some "top-level pins" based on what the user asked to be pinned before it was chunked?
<ReactorScram> Based on that you could even make a directory of all your pins and share that within IPFS itself
<ReactorScram> and eventually your whole disk would accumulate with old outdated direcctories
<crankylinuxuser> Well, not quite. Garbage collection triggers at 10GB by default, or whenever it hits. Also IPFS does deduplication, so if 90% of the project stays the same, the underlying blocks are reused in the new root Multihash.
<ReactorScram> true
<ReactorScram> One of my pet opinions is that IPFS needs something like reference counting so higher-level apps can share an IPFS peer and delete old data once they agree nobody needs it
<flicko> I see. Still, would be nice to be able to browse known directory hashes, the system could go through peer list and check which hashes are directories, then cache the result
<crankylinuxuser> I think one of the reasons why that's... not considered, is because that gives someone else the ability to delete stuff on your computer.

<flicko> Because I really want to browse the thing, to see what's out there, but I can't do it with regular file manager
<ReactorScram> IPFS itself could hold a reference for each hash that was added manually. I am thinking more like a sound editor produces a file and a music player plays it back but neither of them knows when the user is done with it, and the user can't pick it out from billions of hiashes
<ReactorScram> I guess you'd have to make sure the apps don't double-decrement though
<ReactorScram> flicko: Well people occasionally post stuff on the subreddit but there's no inherent way to index it all trivially
<crankylinuxuser> Well, whatever google is doing is searching IPFS-only content. Some of my chatlogs have showed up via Google, with no other links anywhere.
<ReactorScram> For the same reason that indexing the HTTP web is not trivial - It's big and sparse
<flicko> Again, I'd be pretty happy with ability to browse through files, like a network share or an ftp
<crankylinuxuser> My guess is, that Google has a bunch of IPFS nodes watching for all hashes requested, and also requesting when a request hits. And the cache is set to no-delete.
<ReactorScram> HTTP, torrents, IPFS, etc. are much different from FTP or a filesystme
<flicko> no need of search at this point, this can be implemented later if we can just browse through it first
<flicko> IPFS is an Inter-Planetary File System :)
<ReactorScram> crankylinuxuser: Might be a hobby project someone at Google is doing. Does it show up in the results as a gateway.ipfs.io link?

<crankylinuxuser> ReactorScram, it does, as a gateway.ipfs.io
<ReactorScram> hm
<crankylinuxuser> And I generated the IRC logs, no links. I used Node-red to make the IRC log, and a exec node to add the log to ipfs.
<crankylinuxuser> And the room is small enough that I know all the users.
<ReactorScram> After you added it, did you request it from anywhere?
<crankylinuxuser> From my local IPFS node.
<crankylinuxuser> Because it was injected into my remote node.
<ReactorScram> interesting
<crankylinuxuser> The weird part, is I force-added my server as a peer. So the request should have went from my laptop to the local network. That doesnt work, so it hits the 1-hop away machines along with my server. Then granted on my server.
<ReactorScram> Even DDG has a number of gateway.ipfs.io links, if you search for "site:gateway.ipfs.io" but maybe not yours
<crankylinuxuser> I'm running 6 nodes, with 2 being on 1gig links with I2 coverage.
