if anyone sees this, maybe you could help me, i was wondering how i could get some files that i made so that other people can see them (i know i sound stupid)
<paul_>
i mean like, in the IPFS, how do i get a hash for a website?
ashark has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]

I have 7 html files, 1 JavaScript file, 1 CSS file, 2 SVGs, and a PNG
<paul_>
how can i get a hash for them so that they are properly linked?
<paul_>
if that makes sense

Hi! I work for https://www.base-search.net/, a large non-commercial academic search engine. A year or two ago, I tried archiving a TAR dump of our index data as compressed XML into IPFS. Back then IPFS was not ready for that 30 GB file. I think I used version 0.3.11-dev. Would this be a good time to try it again?
<jcgruenhage>
is there a reason to use a tar dump and not simply adding the folder itself?
<r0kk3rz>
the turkish wikipedia was 10GB so 30GB is within the ball park
<r0kk3rz>
bielewelt: whats the purpose of the archive?

<bielewelt>
The TAR dump is what we offer to partners via HTTP. Of course, I could unpack it. This would create a directory with ca. 80,000 *.xml.gz files.
<bielewelt>
That did not work so well either last time.
<r0kk3rz>
if its purely for distribution then the tar makes sense
<r0kk3rz>
but having many small files means you maybe dont have to download the whole thing

Downloading only some of the files does not make much sense. Each file contains 1000 OAI-PMH records, but users have no way of knowing which file to download to get a certain record.

tried, getting this Error: psk header error: multicodec did not match
<Kubuxu>
how did you get the swarm.key file?
<Kubuxu>
did you generate it?
<abbiya>
it is shared by another person on the same network
<abbiya>
in the same network
<Kubuxu>
hmm, it should start with two lines of protocol description
<Kubuxu>
/key/swarm/psk/1.0.0/
<Kubuxu>
and then coding, /hex/ /bin/ or /base64/
<abbiya>
first two lines /key/swarm/psk/1.0.0/
<abbiya>
/base16/
<abbiya>
base16 encoded ?
<Kubuxu>
aah
<Kubuxu>
it is my fault
<Kubuxu>
The software I wrote to generate keys prints /base16/ instead of /hex/
<abbiya>
ok
<Kubuxu>
no
<abbiya>
key file seems fine ?
<Kubuxu>
no
<Kubuxu>
it should be base16
<Kubuxu>
I am confused a bit by names of the packages in the decoder
<Kubuxu>
hmm
<Kubuxu>
Are you on windows, or was he, or was the file edited on windows?
<abbiya>
my key file has this /key/swarm/psk/1.0.0/
<abbiya>
/base16/
<abbiya>
he is on mac
<Kubuxu>
and you?

<Kubuxu>
it might be
<Kubuxu>
like this is my guess right now

<_mak>
when I add a file to my ipfs, is the file private (only who knows the file hash will find it) or other nodes will be informed about the file hash and can download the file as well?
<Kubuxu>
_mak: the later
<_mak>
so everyone knows about the files I add localy
<_mak>
I see
<_mak>
and I guess some nodes could auto-download all files they learn about
<_mak>
there is no way to share privately using ipfs then?
<_mak>
I thought that maybe the unique hash was a security by obscurity aspect of it
<tango___>
yeah.. i heard that most files are public..
<tango___>
correct if i am wrong.. for private files you can still share it but use some kind of encryption.. so that even if somebody holds on to it.. they cant access it..
<victorbjelkholm>
_mak: you can use private networks that are a experimental feature right now
<_mak>
but I guess the hash is propagated through the network when I do an 'add' localy
<victorbjelkholm>
also, you can remove all the bootstrap nodes and just manually connect to the nodes you want to share to, but be careful, if any nodes are connected to outside your network, all the network will become connected
<tango___>
i was trying to run the last example.. and it hangs for ever ..even though the file size is miniscule..
<tango___>
wondering if its because of this..
