Hello there, I was learning about IPFS and was wondering if there exists anyway it can be improved by not directly addressing the hash values but sometihng more user-readable. Does there exists a mapping btween hash and corresponding content description?
<whyrusleeping>
infinite: you can use dnlink

beppu: i think one idea was to get CDN people to use it, from there maybe ISPs would then add it, and then of course people can run one at home if their router doesn't freak shit.

beppu: at a cdn or ISP level the user doesn't have to know the difference. being transparent is good. It's /almost/ (in an abstract way) like when netflix tried to reason with ISPs to let them host a box that would have all the recent movies on it, so ISPs wouldn't have to transfer all that shit.
jkilpatr has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<SchrodingersScat>
beppu: and there's at least a firefox add-on to let you select an IPFS node and have it route requests through it.
<SchrodingersScat>
beppu: Ideally I think you would eventually want the IPFS gateway as a part of standard network setup, so then if I'm on my home wireless my computer could know to transfer via my home IPFS gateway, but if I was at work then it could route through my remote machine, that would be nice.

<robertomurta[m]>
I think a plugin with full ipfs stack (maybe a fast compiled and stable future version of js-ipfs) would be enough and a great step in convincing browsers in adopt it.
<robertomurta[m]>
The killer step, in adoption, would be the distributed indexing and p2p search engine for the contents.
<robertomurta[m]>
When started using ipfs, I had the very same idea of keeping a gateway on home router, but soon I realized that the power of ipfs relies on running it on every station capable in doing it. The gateway option should be kept just for usage low powered/capable/cheap devices.

I think the key concept in solving the search/addressing issue, is a service of distributed name registration, where people can register the name of their resources, maybe with chronological privilege, with some sort of prevention for registering names for future use or selling. Obviously, the main complication is consensus.
