Quick question
<Rusty78>
If I wanted to list all IPFS peers on the entire network how would you recommend I go about this?
<Rusty78>
Or is there a similar maxconnection setting similar to Bitcoin for the number of nodes I can connect to at a time?

<Rusty78>
SchrodingersScat: Hi there
<Rusty78>
How's it going?
<SchrodingersScat>
Rusty78: well, ipfs swarm peers command definitely dumps a list, for mine it lists 774 peers, presumably those are ones I'm connected to
<Rusty78>
Oh wow, ok so that sounds like they don't place default limits on number of peers to connect to
<SchrodingersScat>
not sure about maxconnection type settings...

i've never checked for this though, so it may very well exist
<Rusty78>
If your connected to over 700 peers I am skeptical that they are limiting connected peers
<Rusty78>
I know bitcoind has a max connection setting which severely limits the # of peers by default
zuck05 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

<Rusty78>
It seems that only a max storage property has been added, nothing related to peers or bandwidth limiting
<SchrodingersScat>
cause you should really only need to confirm your blocks with n number peers before you accept it as 'good' although I could see wanting to increase that in case you suspected you were surrounded by foes all feeding you the same wrong information, but then again do THEY want to connect to you? Whereas with ipfs you want more machines to make dht calls to, presumably.
<Rusty78>
Yeah I was more curious about exploring/mapping out the network and number of peers and current behavior (average time online, etc)
<Rusty78>
Thank you for your info, I really appreciate it
<SchrodingersScat>
yep, have fun

I had a momnet of brain activity, cant tell if briliant or stupid: Oracles for smart contracts using a web api seems the dumbest idea. Some ipfs frankenwallet, for websites, could manage registration and encryption while providing data to smart contracts without depending on a centralized server.

in many ways oracles are a dumb idea anyway

if you need one, you're probably better off not using a blockchain

and even with them, you can only do things once the information is on the chain
<aboodman>
you can "do things". you just cant do it on-chain.
<aboodman>
you have to do it client-side.

you wouldnt believe how hard it is to do a token sale without running off to some random country, starting a non-profit, then accepting donations in exchange for coins, and paying your US company with funds from that non-profit.
