<victorbjelkholm>
TsT: sure :) In the future, we'll have the browsers or addons rewriting the url for you to local daemon instead
<victorbjelkholm>
our gateways should be handle whatever you throw at them
<TsT>
Should I expose my current challenge/issue ?
<TsT>
A friend of me collect (for years) lot of documents
<TsT>
he host them on his dedicated server, publicly available
<TsT>
all this document are knowledge
<TsT>
(lot of different domains of knowledge)
<TsT>
he is victim of his success ... he got lot of download on his server
upperdeck has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
<TsT>
and his server become busy
<TsT>
i/o limit reach
<TsT>
reached
<TsT>
then ... he should fix this problem to make one or more mirror
<TsT>
or copy all or a part of these documents to ipfs :P
<TsT>
Im playing with ipfs for that
<treora>
victorbjelkholm: regarding this URL rewriting by browsers, I was wondering what pattern should look for, maybe you know: should they rewrite any URL whose path matches /ipfs/<hash>, or just when the full url matches https://ipfs.io/ipfs/<hash>? Is there a proposed standard about this? (I have not kept up with all the URI discussions)
<TsT>
To reduce the i/o on his server, for a file request, instead of providing the file content he make a redirect to ipfs.io/ipfs/<the-file-hash> to the requester ...
droman has joined #ipfs
<TsT>
we will move lot of BW from his server to ipfs.io
<TsT>
is it a good idea ? :)
<lemmi>
what documents are you talking about and how much traffic are you experiencing? moving to ipfs in general isn't a bad idea. if the content's worth it, people might just jump in and pin it
<victorbjelkholm>
treora: yeah, we have some proposals around, cannot find the link right now, I'm sure lgierth knows where that discussion is being held
<victorbjelkholm>
TsT: yeah, should be no problem for us :)
<Kythyria[m]>
Better to only do rewriting when the resource is known to want it?

Kythyria[m]: how would you know what they want? Keep a list of domains? That's not a very decentralisation-friendly approach. Add a flag in e.g. /.well-known/ipfs? Cleaner, but it partly defeats the purpose since you then still depend on the original server being alive and reachable. As far as I can see, the flag has to be in the URL itself.. (unfortunately breaking the rule not keep URLs opaque, yes..)
charley has joined #ipfs
<Kythyria[m]>
Matching on the path starting with `/ipfs/` wouldn't be opaque either.
<treora>
Kythyria[m]: yes sorry that's what I meant to say: "unfortunately breaking the rule to keep URLs opaque" (excuse my typos)
f33d has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<treora>
Reading that rule again, I realise it would be slightly cleaner to put the 'flag' to detect an ipfs URL with not in the path, but in the subdomain, since that is being read by the browser to determine who to contact. Then the path could stay opaque during this decision.
droman has quit [Quit: WeeChat 1.9]

So perhaps we could check if hostname matches /^ipfs\./ ? I fear it is not much better however, but perhaps just a bit.
<Kythyria[m]>
Obviously for some data it's possible to include a hint that you should switch to IPFS.

So we're soon ready with a proof of concept IPFS driver in FriendUP.
<m0ns00n>
We're allowing all FriendUP users to create an IPFS drive and use it as a disk in this web operating system.
<m0ns00n>
I'm sure you may have some insights etc regarding our implementation, and perhaps you can also improve our solution.
<m0ns00n>
We're using browser based encryption where possible to make sure that it's safe to store files using your web browser.

<whyrusleeping>
but the branches are traversed in order
<whyrusleeping>
(not exactly randomized, but they arent necessarily ordered at each point)
<ipfsnewbie>
Thank you for the answer! How big are these branches? Are they different for a 1KiB/1MiB/100MiB file?

What actually interests me is whether IPFS takes advantage of peers that report that they have a block, even though the block belongs to the end of the file.
