<heimindanger>
hi @whyrusleeping
<lgierth>
heimindanger: hey, great to have you
<lgierth>
awesome stuff
<heimindanger>
I released a new article today, showing to steem users how to download the IPFS node and start pinning
<heimindanger>
Also dtube has a ipns now
<lgierth>
i bumped into something yesterday that's easy to fix: you list earth, mercury, scrappy, chappy in the gateway picker -- these can go away at any time and we'll not guarantee for anything. https://ipfs.io is the only one of the "official" gateway nodes we recommend
<whyrusleeping>
ugh, we really need to work on making ipns faster
<lgierth>
and you can remove gateway.ipfs.io too since that's just the old deprecated name for what's now ipfs.io
charley has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
erictapen has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<heimindanger>
@lgierth okay noted I will delete gateway.
<lgierth>
awesome thanks!
* lgierth
just trying to keep technical debt under control on all fronts :):)
<lgierth>
really nice work
<heimindanger>
There are dozens of open gateways on port 8080 , 80 , 443 it's easy to find them. I only added the IPFS ones
<heimindanger>
In the end, I wish not to leverage on your infrastructure and will propose a way for steem witnesses to run their gateways and get monetary rewards probably
<lgierth>
oh feel totally encouraged to use ipfs.io!
<lgierth>
in the not-too distant future the browsers addons will recognize these addresses and hijack the http request, fetching through ipfs instead
<lgierth>
i'm just asking to have these individual hosts removed because they're internal addresses -- having them publicly used makes it a loss harder to change our infrastructure
<heimindanger>
Well, that would remove all the problems with gateways
<lgierth>
but ipfs.io itself is absolutely fine
<heimindanger>
True peer to peer is the end goal I suppose :D
<lgierth>
yeah definitely!
<lgierth>
the gateway is just a transition tool

<lgierth>
it'll always be there of course, but it's not the ultimate goal

is there a list anywhere of what you can currently do with ipfs ?
NullConstant has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<fleeky>
i havent checked in in a while and it seems like a lot has changed
<lgierth>
ask not what ipfs can do for you, ask what you can do for ipfs
<lgierth>
:)
<lgierth>
its core hasn't changed really -- it's just getting more stable and ironed out
<lgierth>
what kind of things are you looking for?
<lgierth>
"everything it can do" is pretty open
jmill has joined #ipfs
<heimindanger>
I want to be able to do video src='ipfs://XXX'
<lgierth>
me tooo :(
<heimindanger>
would make all this shit so much cleaner
<lgierth>
web extensions need better URL protocol handler APIs
<heimindanger>
also I wish the default configs were changed, but I guess thats not up to me :D
<heimindanger>
But I dont understand why the API doesnt have CORS opened by default, as its only opened to 127.0.0.1
<lgierth>
like, way better
<lgierth>
we're about to work on that -- would be useful to get your voice in that some time soon. subscribe to this issue if you want and we'll post updates there https://github.com/ipfs/specs/pull/152
<lemmi>
huh.. it looks like that for me video is streaming. but i'm in over localhost
<lemmi>
not the ip
<heimindanger>
4.11-dev ?
<lemmi>
still 4.10
<lemmi>
starts playing instanty
f33d has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<heimindanger>
For me in with local gateway it fetches the full file before streaming it in the browser. But then I can go to any time in the video and its instant
<lgierth>
heimindanger: are you exposing :5001 to the internet?
<heimindanger>
No, only from local
<lemmi>
streaming takes a while
<lemmi>
err.. seeking
<heimindanger>
So it works for you lemmi, I'd be happy if you dropped me your go-ipfs config :D
<whyrusleeping>
sans private key
<whyrusleeping>
we really need to move that thing...
<lemmi>
heimindanger: basic config, threw out ip6
<lemmi>
just clutters the logs
<heimindanger>
bitswap: couldnt open sender again ?
<lemmi>
i don't use ipv6. it's impossible to use properly here
<lemmi>
the prefixchanges really mess up the privacy extensions
charley has joined #ipfs
<whyrusleeping>
heimindanger: eh, that ones not exactly an error. We need to drop it down to warning
<heimindanger>
Also I played around with a script to generate a bunch of keys, ended up needing to wipe the ipfs install because of 'too many files open error'
<heimindanger>
managed to backup the good key succesfully

Oh you mean the router bug? Yeah it removed the /ipfs/XXX part of the url
<heimindanger>
doesnt do this bug on the main domain hopefully ^^
<heimindanger>
when you click on the logo it removes it
<lemmi>
that will need the ipfs extension, right?
<fleeky>
lgierth: for instance i have no idea what pubsub is , i heard at one point ipns was going to allow more names per instance but not sure if thats happening, also there just seems to be a lot of activity
<fleeky>
someone should make a news aggregator of ipfs development on an ipns site ;)
<lemmi>
but in any case.. this is pretty neat
<lgierth>
fleeky: i'll give beer and chocolate to anyone who comes up with a nice news/activity aggregator using CRDTs
<lgierth>
i'd love to see it happen and have a pretty good idea of what it should do, just don't have the time to properly get familiar with js in browsers
<lemmi>
lgierth: "Error: no link named "blog" under QmPCawMTd7csXKf7QVr2B1QRDZxdPeWxtE4EpkDRYtJWty"

I manually port forward port 4000 in my ipv4 NAT router to an ipfs ipfs daemon. ipfs v0.4.9 works and lists my public ip in 'ipfs id', but v0.4.10 does not find the public ip of the IPv4 NAT router.
<bwerthmann>
feature or bug?
<bwerthmann>
the deamon appears to have established connections via a NAT-T mech, but the performance drop was obvious

so i was trying to add a file to ipfs and got the too many files error. I don't have much pinned, shouldn't the default limit be raised if it hits the cap this easily? (it seems to have already doubled it to 2048)
