Hi
<justintv90>
Does IPFS require fee to operate on nodes?
<justintv90>
I couldn't find any material which mentioned about it
comingsoontm_ has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<whyrusleeping>
justintv90: no, ipfs is free
<kode54>
from what I've gathered, the only thing that will actually "cost" is hosting content on other nodes without also pushing it from your own node
<kode54>
and the cost of operating that sort of scheme is a cryptocurrency, Filecoin
<kode54>
tell me if I've gotten this wrong
<kode54>
essentially paying for hosting if you aren't going to operate your own source node
<kode54>
since other nodes will probably drop data from their caches if it's not accessed for a while, so your node will refeed them when that content is accessed again
<whyrusleeping>
kode54: that sounds about right, yeah
<kode54>
thanks, glad I figured something out from observation
<kode54>
my memory for some things seems to be spot on, and for others, it goes right out the moment I change tasks
<justintv90>
Sorry, the file on IPFS network will be stored permanently, what if I want to replace that file?
<justintv90>
Can I do that?
<justintv90>
I tried to change the content of the file
<justintv90>
Add it
<justintv90>
IPFS returns another hash
<justintv90>
I used the previous one and the old file was still there

ion: but I mean, there was any plugin, tool to replace my file?
<ion>
IPNS provides mutable references on IPFS, you can create an IPNS name and update it to point to your updated data.

hello, is there some service where basically I agree to pin some random people's stuff and in return they pin mine?
<akr>
ideally it should be fully automated, like I just select how many copies I want of a certain hash and it automatically determines how much I should pin for other people, and then does so automatically

I'm not sure how peer discovery would work

it would probably need to be implemented directly into ipfs
<whyrusleeping>
akr: you could use a libp2p service probably

Okay, totally random question that Google couldn't answer. If I have firewalled access to my boxes appropiately, and I have two NAS units running a Linux distro, I can get ipfs on them. Is there a mechanism that I can use which makes these two NAS units redundant in terms of the data they store? I don't want one NAS to have all the data and the other NAS to have none.
<Vaelatern>
This, with the NASes actually several hundred miles apart, is the setup I envision for my online backups.
