<aidalgol>
How does IPFS handle nodes going up and down? I get the impression that it's designed to be robust against that (to an extent, of course).
<aidalgol>
(I'm still reading through the white paper.)
larpanet has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
<Fessus>
aidalgol, it works more or less like torrent seeders coming online and going offline. If you're wondering about some guarantee of a file's availability then that doesn't really exist on vanilla ipfs, that's what filecoin is supposed to do
<aidalgol>
Thanks, I'll look up filecoin
<aidalgol>
Blockchain-based storage sounds neat, but... why is it also a currency?
<Fessus>
essentially it allows people to rent out disc space in return for coins without the involvement of any central authority
<Fessus>
if you just wanted to use credit card payments you would need some sort of centralized system
<Fessus>
the storage itself isn't on a blockchain, it's mediated by a blockchain. You get new coins by actually proving that you're storing the data you promised to store earlier
<aidalgol>
Oh! OK.
<aidalgol>
Kinda obvious now that I think about it.
<Fessus>
It's an interesting system but at this point it's unproven, we'll see if it actually works as intended when they fully release it. It's made by the same people who made IPFS
<aidalgol>
I think I'd rather just contribute to IPFS. Which leads me to my next question: what's the best way to do that? Just use IPFS and I'll automatically be helping out by my cache providing redundancy?
Adbray has quit [Quit: Quit]
<Fessus>
probably the best way to help is to just run the daemon and pin interesting IPFS content you come across
<aidalgol>
Which leads us to the question of discoverability. :P
<MikeFair>
It simply takes the content of a textarea, uploads it to IPFS as file content, then spits out a URL that points to the CID on ipfs.io
<MikeFair>
It also can take the input on the query string of the URL
<MikeFair>
because of the context of the example, the parameter is called "xdr"
<MikeFair>
So http://....?xdr=Text_Content_To_Upload_Goes_Here
<aidalgol>
MikeFair: Cool!
<MikeFair>
The whole thing is <90 lines total, <60 lines of javascript, ~10 lines of IPFS related commands

<]BFG[>
you should be working on D-tube
<]BFG[>
its so alfa you have to upload a file 10 times to finally get uploaded
<]BFG[>
also 1GB max filesize is not good enough
<chrono[m]>
d-tube ++
<chrono[m]>
YT needs to go and LBRY has knocked itself out with that ASIC shit
<]BFG[>
screw yt, they deleted almost 2k of my uploaded videos, paid like <1$ per year for monetization then throw m,e out of the program
<]BFG[>
surely they made over 100k from my channel kept it all
<MikeFair>
I looked at D-Tube, I don't really want to argue with their monetization model
<MikeFair>
One other thing I am working on, though it's not something many seem to see the value in, is an HTTP based file store for CID vaulting
<chrono[m]>
BFG: ye, YT needs to be gone - was trying to find a couple of documentaries, all gone, either monetarization/rights issues or the new censorship regime - in any case - we really need a good alterantive for it
<MikeFair>
I personally a lot more people would be able to participate in IPFS block vaulting if they didn't have to run a full blown daemon, and could host it on their shared webhosting accounts
<MikeFair>
Not that I know how to code it, but think "IPFS Plugin for WordPress"
<MikeFair>
Every few minutes, all those WordPress sites would wake up, roll through the peer websites they are aware of, exchange data somewhat like a bitswap algorithm, then go back to sleep
<MikeFair>
They'd maintain an internal database of CID -> HTTP Peer server address mappings
<MikeFair>
And at most attempt to "reverse proxy" a CID request to see if they can find the file before the HTTP request timeout hit
<MikeFair>
s/file/block
<MikeFair>
that's the idea anyway; make HTTP the block cache behind IPFS

Hey, I'm using js-ipfs and have problems accessing my added file on localhost
<anon123>
So the swarm is listening on: /ip4/127.0.0.1/tcp/1337/ipfs/
<anon123>
But i get connection refused, not sure why.
<anon123>
The file is accessible on ipfs.io tho, so not sure what is going wrong.

anon123: the swarm addresses are the for telling IPFS how to listen for incoming connection from other IPFS nodes. To access the file using HTTP you need to expose the gateway, which by default using go-ipfs is on localhost:8080, I'm not sure if js-ipfs has the gateway and/or if it exposes it. ipfs.io is finding your file because it connected to your js-ipfs node and then cached it locally
