<vmx>
though it's hard to find out what the right way is. any pointers are appreciated
<whyrusleeping>
It would seem david disagrees with how things should work
weez17 has joined #ipfs
<vmx>
yes, seems like it :)
<vmx>
whyrusleeping: i guess he (and hence i, as i learned from him) would expect a link named data to be in "Links"
<vmx>
=> cid/Links/Data
<vmx>
or perhaps even cid/Links/0/Data (it depends i guess)
<whyrusleeping>
right
<whyrusleeping>
but the way that those protobufs have worked since creation is that <QmFoo>/bar refers to a link named bar in the links array
<whyrusleeping>
and reinterpreting things is fine and all, except that breaks assumptions
<whyrusleeping>
which tends to be... bad
<whyrusleeping>
I can close my eyes and plug my ears and someone could change that and I probably wouldnt be too upset, but stable APIs are important around here
<vmx>
whyrusleeping: that's good to know
<vmx>
i mean the way links work
<vmx>
and the rest :)
<vmx>
cbor btw works as i'd expect it
<whyrusleeping>
yeah
<whyrusleeping>
because we figured out that the protobuf thing was pretty dumb by that point :P
rodolf0 has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
<whyrusleeping>
The issue with doing it the way that has "/Links/foo" is that now pretty much every existing path has to be referenced as "QmFoo/Links/bar/Links/baz/Links/thing"
<whyrusleeping>
which is unpleasant
<vmx>
ok. then you just can't get the data field of a pb node through the dag api
<whyrusleeping>
yeah
<vmx>
you could always get the raw block and do it manually
<vmx>
this should perhaps be documented (in case anyone cares about using pb nodes in the dag)
<vmx>
whyrusleeping: i'll post a summary of what we've talked about at the issue. thanks for all the information

I saw bug 2839 about ipfs filestore and symlinks, and I understand the "symlinks should be added as symlinks" rationale, but is there still no way to follow symlinks to real files when doing `ipfs add -r dir/` ?
f0i has joined #ipfs
<vandemar>
I mean ipfs add -r --nocopy
<whyrusleeping>
vandemar: not currently, we should probably add a --follow-symlinks option to ipfs add
MDude has joined #ipfs
joocain2 has joined #ipfs
<vandemar>
is it just a matter of adding that flag and having the code follow the symlink, or are there complications when ipfs looks up a block hash, sees it points to a location that's really a symlink, and then not following the symlink correctly when trying to *retrieve* file data?
trqx has joined #ipfs
miyagi1 has joined #ipfs

No, once its in ipfs the symlink aspect shouldnt matter

it should really be as simple as just adding the flag and following symlinks

When a remote client wants to retrieve some object that a local ipfs instance has, but the location on disk is a symlink, how does the local ipfs know whether to serve it as a symlink or follow the symlink and serve the file data? I thought the point of the reversion in 2839 was to allow ipfs to serve symlinks, so wouldn't there have to be a flag stored in the database along with the file metadata to tell
colatkinson has joined #ipfs

<whyrusleeping>
so if you have a path in the filestore that says foo/bar/baz/thing
<whyrusleeping>
and bar is a symlink
<whyrusleeping>
it should walk over that, since the path says to
<vandemar>
and if thing is a symlink to a file?
<whyrusleeping>
It will call Open on it, to read. Which should follow symlinks
<vandemar>
whyrusleeping: I guess where I'm confused is I don't understand the point of respecting symlinks by default when adding objects, if symlinks are going to be followed on file retrieval

it seems like ipfs should be focused on data, not replicating filesystem structure. what's next, special cases for handling block/character device files?
<cipres>
if you schedule a "pin add" and lose the HTTP connection to the daemon's API would the daemon continue the pinning ?
<whyrusleeping>
vandemar: ipfs is a filesystem
<cipres>
hey why
<whyrusleeping>
cipres: no, but its a requested feature. need background jobs to be able to do that
<whyrusleeping>

whyrusleeping: okay, so maybe I'm not understanding. It respects symlinks (adds symlinks as symlinks) when adding a directory recursively, but doesn't respect symlinks on *retrieval*? Isn't that inconsistent and doesn't that make it pointless not to follow symlinks during add?
<whyrusleeping>
vandemar: given that ipfs is a filesystem, it needs to be able to replicate filesystem structure. Otherwise... its not a filesystem. Included in handling filesystem stucture is handling symlinks. If you don't handle symlinks, then you can't do things like add an unpacked linux ISO
fazo96 has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]

thanks for any suggestions
<Kythyria[m]>
Not all filesystems have symlinks
<Kythyria[m]>
It may be a filesystem, but it's not a unix filesystem.
<vandemar>
whyrusleeping: I also tried adding a symlink to a tiny test file. When retrieving, it retrieved the target (the text file), not a symlink.
<whyrusleeping>
vandemar: talking about code deep in the filestore specific implementations, not ipfs in general
<whyrusleeping>
Kythyria[m]: yeah, thus our naming of things as "unixfs"
<Kythyria[m]>
Is it even useful to be able to store symlinks in content-addressable storage?
<Kythyria[m]>
(unless you're specifically trying to store a unixoid filesystem in there, and then you need a whole lot more, like xattrs)
<vandemar>
yeah, I mean I admit I haven't read (or written) the implementation like the devs have, but it's not making a lot of sense to me either.
<Kythyria[m]>
Also, how do you even serve symlinks?
<Kythyria[m]>
Unless you're using FUSE you don't quite have such a thing unless you want to replicate symlinks as redirects.

you can have a block that contains metadata about other blocks, including their CID, and so build large blocks out of small ones; this is what IPLD is for, to a first approximation.

you can do `ipfs dht get /ipns/QmFooBar`

which you would have to decode as a protobuf
