Hey everyone! I just spent some time getting familiar with ipfs (reading paper, watching Fullstack conference talk from '16), and I had a question
<questioner>
where could I find the relevant documentation for how to restrict access to writing on a given node
<questioner>
I'm trying to wrap my head around how I would implement an application on top of IPFS that required authentication/authorization and all I've been able to find so far is capabilities (in a github issue from 2015/2016)
<questioner>
in the most basic example, let's say downloads a frontend bundle from IPFS (from ipns/my-key), and then they want to login, so let's say they upload a file using the js client to ipns/my-key, how do I stop others from reading that file (containing login credentials)?
leebyron has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<questioner>
nope nvm I just answered my own question, could use the hosts public key, generate some symmetric key and add it to the payload
<questioner>
though I would like to hear what the "blessed" way of doing this is

it seems for ipfs get hash to work, one has to run ipfs daemon in the background
<Mitar>
this is not too clear from documentation
<Mitar>
and not very user friendly
<Mitar>
I tried to tell my fellow researcher to use ipfs to download a dataset over ipfs, but it seems just snap install ipfs; ipfs get <hash> does not work
Kyung has left #ipfs [#ipfs]
<heimindanger>
yes you must run a daemon in online mode in the background
<heimindanger>
so you need to install, init, then run the daemon (possibly add it to your autostart script), then you should be set forever
