<Aaronstotle>
Hello, I've installed ipfs through snap on ubuntu 18.04 (MATE), for some reason I can't add anything to ipfs, it always says the file can't be found, regardless of how specific I am regarding the path
hacman has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<JCaesar>
I assume that's a sandboxing problem?
<lgierth>
the author of that snap is here sometimes, elopio
<lgierth>
but yeah sounds like sandboxing
<AphelionZ>
hi lgierth can you have a look at my paste above? the deploy script?
<lgierth>
AphelionZ: you can replace `ipfs add -r client | tail -1 | cut -d ' ' -f2` with `ipfs add -r -Q client`
<lgierth>
and --recursive is default for pin add so you can drop that too
<lgierth>
and you can try `ipfs refs -r $hash` to see where it gets stuck transferring
<AphelionZ>
ok cool, i'll try that
<AphelionZ>
thank you!

hello again ipfs ... I stumbled on to this thread: https://github.com/ipfs/notes/issues/70 and I'm curious of any document or key/value database projects that are known on ipfs? Seems the "infinite automata" project is dead?

Hi everyone, a newbie question. When adding content, am I correct in saying that in order to make some files available I need to have a server running that other servers can fetch from?
<r0kk3rz>
yup
<Unode>
Also wondering about data persistency, if the primary data storage (mine) is taken down, does this mean that there's no longer a guarantee that the files I was distributing are available unless some other server pinned the data?
bomb-on has quit [Quit: SO LONG, SUCKERS!]
<r0kk3rz>
sure
<Unode>
ok thanks. This clears the doubt.

<mikeal>
is there an ipfs command or api to drop a single cid?
<mikeal>
or a set of cids, the way that `ipfs repo gc` does but with specific cid's
<lgierth>
mikeal: ipfs block rm
<lgierth>
block is the smallest unit in terms of data structures
<mikeal>
oh, that works with cids for dag nodes as well, i didn't realize :)
lbug[m] has joined #ipfs
<mikeal>
i have a big bulk write operation and I actually know all the cid's i'm going to orphan so i want to just drop them manually instead of performing a gc over the entire tree
<lgierth>
it sounds like you Know What You're Doing then :)

<sbani>
good morning, is the `ipfs ls` command somehow able to list files by/with date like `ls -l`?
andrewhill has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<lgierth>
sbani: modification dates are not stored
<lgierth>
because that'd mean different hashes for the same file, just because of different timestamps
<sbani>
lgierth, thanks for the fast answer :)
<sbani>
ah yeah makes sense
<lgierth>
we might add an option in the future to add timestamps when adding files, for those who know what they're doing
<sbani>
ok i see
<sbani>
it's not that I need the timestamp in a file. It's the list, where I "want it"
<lgierth>
you can implement your own directory object in the meantime
<lgierth>
which has links to the files like a normal ipfs unixfs directory, but also contains the timestamps
<lgierth>
`ipfs object` is your friend there
<sbani>
oh wow, nice, sounds great
<sbani>
i will have a look
<sbani>
in the meantime, i will just add a index.html file which solves the problem in the first place
<lgierth>
ah yeah that works too :D
<sbani>
and I was wondering how if I can a ipfs object in a list if it's not there yet?
<lgierth>
ipsf object patch
<sbani>
like: I know the hash, but the file is not yet there
<sbani>
ah ok, just checked the cmd help. thanks lgierth, you helped a lot
