hello fellow humans. I want to give a dedicated partition to ipfs. I see a couple of 'mounts' and 'mountpoints' on the config file, but I don't know specifically which option to toggle. Can you guys give a help?

When you pin something and add it to "ipfs files" are you double storing an object?
<TrUsT_n1>
Another question would be can you add something to "ipfs files" and not store it on your local machine?
ericxtang has joined #ipfs
<pjz>
TrUsT_n1: pinning doesn't double store it, it just makes sure the single store doesn't get garbage collected
pvh has joined #ipfs
<pjz>
TrUsT_n1: an 'ipfs add' on your local machine adds it to your local datatore. If you want it to be stored elsewhere, you need to get someplace else to fetch (and probably pin) it.
<TrUsT_n1>
pjz: I got that part.
<TrUsT_n1>
pjz: I'm trying to figure out if you add something to "ipfs files" does it store it localy if the pin is elsewhere?
<TrUsT_n1>
pjz: or is it just a reference.
<pjz>
TrUsT_n1: anything you actually access via a hash is in your local datastore, at least as a copy
<pjz>
TrUsT_n1: the hash is the reference, and by looking at the contents, you're de-referencing - and therefore making a local copy of - it.
<TrUsT_n1>
pjz: ok, I think I get it.
rngkll has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<pjz>
TrUsT_n1: from 'ipfs files help': | ipfs files ls [<path>] - List directories in the local mutable namespace.
<pjz>
key words: local mutable namespace
<TrUsT_n1>
pjz: Ah, so you add it to 'files' and it will become local. Got it.

<pjz>
so I've got a new service for IPFS almost done
<pjz>
dynipns.io
<pjz>
It will be a dynamic IPNS service - sort of like all the dynamic-DNS services. You give it a name and a hash and it will put those into DNS for you
<pjz>
user accounts are a pain, though, so I'm thinking I'm just going to have you *also* specify a password for each name you set. If it's a new name, that password gets set, if it's an old name, it's used as auth.
<Voker57>
well, still better than using IPNS
<pjz>
yeah, the goal is to make IPNS easier to use
<pjz>
does IPNS do CNAME dereferencing right now?
<pjz>
ie. if foo.bar is a cname of foobar.bar, and foobar.bar has an IPFS hash TXT record, does ipns://foo.bar/ resolve to the hash?
<Voker57>
you probably mean dnslink thing, not ipns
<pjz>
I probably do :)
<pjz>
voker57: does the password thing sound like a reasonable api? maybe also add a new_password that's a way to change the password as well
<pjz>
also an expire time that defaults to a month out but can be set sooner if desired
<pjz>
it's going to start out free. I'll figure out how to monetize it later.
<Voker57>
I guess it's reasonable for a start
