<tyler-baker> mripard_, wens ssvb, I was able to wrap the cpuburn-arm tests for LAVA during my flight home from ELC. If/When there is a rewrite in C it would be nice print the output in a way that would be easier to parse.

<Fraz> hello
<Fraz> I have an error when compliling u-boot for olimex lime2 using meta-sunxi
<Fraz> I don't have this error when I compile for olimex lime
<Fraz> plaes: so ? I have to ask there ?
<plaes> report it there
<Fraz> If anyone have a suggestion, I welcome it. :)
<plaes> it's probably using older u-boot which doesn't yet have lime2 support
<plaes> I would look into that
<Fraz> How do I check ?
<plaes> dunno
<plaes> I haven't used Openembedded for years

<cooper> ssvb: My tests are failing due to a missing mali kernel module. Could it be that you can't run this test with a mainline kernel?
<cooper> ssvb: "mainline kernel" being mripard's version of mainline.
<ssvb> Cooper: yes, sunxi-3.4 is required - http://linux-sunxi.org/A10_DRAM_Controller_Calibration#The_kernel.2C_rootfs_and_installing_the_necessary_userland_tools
<ssvb> but it is just the kernel, you should have no problems compiling it
<cooper> Mainline u-boot has no issues with it?
<ssvb> mainline u-boot is fine
<cooper> I recall mainline u-boot being unable to boot the 3.4 kernel with its fex-generated script.bin file (not sure if that's related).
<cooper> With the old u-boot I had "ext2load mmc 0 0x43000000 script.bin" "ext2load mmc 0 0x48000000 uImage" "bootm 0x48000000"
<cooper> With the mainline u-boot I had "ext2load mmc 0 0x46000000 zImage" "ext2load mmc 0 0x49000000 sun7i-a20-pcduino3-nano.dtb" "bootz 0x46000000 - 0x49000000"
<cooper> The old u-boot's scr file didn't allow mainline u-boot to start the kernel.
<ssvb> it highlights some differences in the boot.cmd between the sunxi-3.4 and mainline kernel support

<jjardon> simosx: thanks for the link. So in the case I wanted to use the sunxi 3.4.x kernel instead the one provided for the board, it would be as easy as replace the kernel or more work is needed to run Android on top?

<simosx> jjardon, what kernel version do you have for your A20 board?
<jjardon> simosx: 3.4.39
<simosx> jjardon, afaik, the Android Linux kernel has specific requirements/patches that are needed to boot android. A non-Android Linux kernel will probably not work.

<cooper__> ssvb or anybody else who has suggestions, I could use some. I can't get mainline u-boot to boot my 3.4 kernels.
<cooper__> I've tried 2 different ones which worked with the old u-boot.
<cooper__> On the screen it says "Booting kernel from Legacy Image at 42000000 ...
<cooper__> It correctly identifies the kernel, the image type, the data size (3MB in both cases).
<cooper__> Load Address and Entry Point are 40008000, checksum verification succeeds, loading kernel image says ok, then "Starting kernel ..."
<cooper__> And then nothing.
<cooper__> It just sits there.
<cooper__> I'm using the u-boot cmd for 3.4 as described at http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_U-boot#Boot using the left version of the || (and the u-boot output suggests that's all working fine)
<ssvb> Cooper__: do you get these messages on the serial console or on a hdmi monitor?
<cooper__> HDMI.
<cooper__> I don't have serial.
<cooper__> (no adapter jtag thingamajig)
<ssvb> Cooper__: I see, I guess it is http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_U-boot#Troubleshooting
<ssvb> but you just don't see the results of the failed machine ID check on the monitor
<cooper__> So I need to rebuild u-boot with those workarounds?
<ssvb> better use the stage/sunxi-3.4 branch
<cooper__> But... I think that's what I'm using...
<ssvb> hmm
<cooper__> Or, well, trying to use.
<ssvb> then it's strange
<cooper__> "Image Name: Linux-3.4.103-g9a1cd03"
<ssvb> but if you don't have a serial console, then you can't really see any kind of feedback when booting the system
<cooper__> Should those Load Address and Entry Point addresses be so low?
<ssvb> the addresses should be all fine
<cooper__> Hrmm... :-/
<ssvb> what kind of rootfs are you trying to use? does it work with the mainline kernel?
<NiteHawk> Cooper__: i experienced something similar with 3.4.103 and u-boot-2015.04-rc4 on banana pi (A20). had to use CONFIG_OLD_SUNXI_KERNEL_COMPAT=y to solve it
<cooper__> NiteHawk: Looking to see if I have that currently set or not.
<ssvb> Cooper__: this should not be necessary with the stage/sunxi-3.4 kernel, but you can try it nevertheless
JohnDoe_71Rus has quit [Quit: KVIrc 4.2.0 Equilibrium http://www.kvirc.net/]
<cooper__> It's not set.
<NiteHawk> i've used it with the LeMaker flavor kernel (3.4.103), but it might nevertheless be worth a try...
<NiteHawk> symptoms for me were identical - the kernel loaded but just wouldn't boot up
<cooper__> That goes into the defconfig, yeah?
<NiteHawk> i used "make menuconfig" to set it directly
<NiteHawk> but placing it in defconfig should work too
<ssvb> Cooper__: "... http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_U-boot#Boot using the left version of the || ..." <- do you mean the version from the right side of the table?
<cooper__> Yes.
<ssvb> ok
<cooper__> But instead of "load mmc 0:1 0x43000000 script.bin || load mmc 0:1 0x43000000 boot/script.bin" I put in just "load mmc 0:1 0x43000000 script.bin"
<ssvb> why?
<NiteHawk> that's okay if you don't have/use a boot subdir
<cooper__> My /boot is a separate partition.
<cooper__> And if u-boot couldn't find the files, it wouldn't be reporting on their contents.
<ssvb> right
<ssvb> is this a correct script.bin file by the way?
<cooper__> From the original fex.
<cooper__> Used to boot those kernels before I moved to mainline kernel and u-boot.
<cooper__> I never managed to boot the old kernel with the new u-boot, but that had almost certainly something to do with bad values in the boot.scr
<ssvb> well, having serial console would really help a lot
<cooper__> ...
<cooper__> DX.com wants 3 euro. Local webshop wants 20 euro, local brick and mortar shop wants 30 euro...
<cooper__> Sorry, but that means I'm going for dx.com which is going to take a while.
<cooper__> In the mean time I'll try NiteHawk's suggestion.
cubeast has joined #linux-sunxi
<cooper__> Well, I'm getting a different result at least.
<cooper__> The screen blanks after u-boot says "starting kernel"
<cooper__> But after that, nothing.
<cooper__> I'll go try the latest 3.4 kernel
<NiteHawk> hmmm... now it would be helpful to know if the kernel fails or just doesn't start up HDMI output - unfortunately that would probably require the serial console
<cooper__> Yeah.... I was at one point very busy removing Mali from the kernel but I don't believe I'd succeeded with that on this particular kernel.
<NiteHawk> but this particular kernel/script.bin combination works with older u-boot?
<cooper__> Yes. To the best of my knowledge.
<ssvb> Cooper__: the screen blanks because you get the display driver initialized, which is a good sign
<cooper__> The combination of old u-boot, that kernel, that script.bin and the previous boot.src
<ssvb> Cooper__: what do you mean "try the latest 3.4 kernel"? can you check if you are using the latest stage/sunxi-3.4 with all the recent commits?
<cooper__> ssvb: I would agree, although I can imagine a compatibility tweak to be that u-boot, which already knows how to deal with hdmi, pre-inits it.
<cooper__> ssvb: That's what I'm trying. What's the git command for bringing in any remote changes?
<cooper__> git pull says I'm up to date
<cooper__> But it might need additional parameters...?
<ssvb> can you run "git log" and check what is the latest commit?
<cooper__> 9a1cd034181af628d4145202289e1993c1687db6 by you, oct 4th 2014

<Patukas> hi, any example of machine and codec driver with i2s capture enable?
<simosx> ssvb, https://github.com/hechuanlong/xf86-video-fbturbo-a80 (updated and linked to your repo)
<cooper__> Yup. Native.
<cooper__> I *HATE* cross-compiling. Always messes up the local system and never thus far produced a working binary for the other system for me.
<cooper__> And I'm not in any particular hurry.
<ssvb> Cooper__: I think that you can give it another try
<ssvb> just kick some commands from http://linux-sunxi.org/Toolchain#Gentoo and you will get a working crosscompiler
<cooper__> ssvb: And just so you know, that's why I've been trying to trim down my kernel config - if I exclude the stuff I don't need (re)building the kernel goes considerably faster.
domidumont has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ssvb> oh, that's just one more reason to switch to crosscompiling :-)
domidumont has joined #linux-sunxi
<ssvb> you will never look back, at least for the kernel and u-boot
<cooper__> We'll see. Right now I don't compile the kernel that often anymore.
<cooper__> u-boot doesn't take that long.
<cooper__> And since I set the board to compile while I'm away and it tends to finish the job by the time I get home, I see no problem.
domidumont has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<cooper__> Something completely different: According to Wikipedia the AllWinner H3 is basically a shrunken copy of the A31 (smaller manufacturing process). Any word yet on wether someone from the linux-sunxi community is looking into getting it going with Linux?
<cooper__> I'm quite seriously considering getting a stack of Orange Pi Mini 2's this summer. Would be nice to know if people have taken a look already and commented on its viability.
<ssvb> Cooper__: since H3 uses Mali graphics, it can't be a shrunken copy of the A31
<cooper__> Sorry. Shrunken A33

<cooper__> Built a kernel as-is using sun7i_defconfig and a mainline u-boot from which I reverted the compatibility tweak NiteHawk previously suggested. U-boot does its thing and seems happy, says it's starting the kernel, screen blanks, then nothing.
<cooper__> Looking over atsampson's Makefile to see what he's doing, and the only difference is that he has the EMAC configured to 'n' whereas on mine it's 'y'.
<cooper__> I've built a kernel with EMAC and no GMAC before which only meant no network, not a non-booting kernel.
<cooper__> Guess I really do need that USB serial-TTL

<NiteHawk> Cooper__: i cannot really office any advice on your kernel issue. i just wanted to mention that i observed a similar issue when trying to boot an older 3.4.103 with A20 and recent u-boot-2015.04-rc4 (kernel loaded but won't start up / hangs)
<NiteHawk> for me, the "Enable workarounds for booting old kernels" from http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_U-boot#Troubleshooting was able to fix it
<cooper__> I'll try that tomorrow as it's bedtime for me now. And since I'm using the staging kernel here, I've got 3.4.104 which might account for something aswell.

<cooper__> Since u-boot rebuilds quite quickly I tried it with the added setting - no change. Screen blanks and then nothing.
<cooper__> The serial adapter is on order, but might take a bit. I think I'm going to have to wait for atsampson to return.

<cooper__> I updated mainline u-boot to the latest version. That might make a difference, but will be something for tomorrow.

<mripard_> paulk-collins: for which defconfig ?
<paulk-collins> multi_v7
<mripard_> weird
<mripard_> do you have your .config somewhere?
<paulk-collins> I'm using linus's master
<paulk-collins> mripard_, the sun7i-a20-cubieboard2.dtb target works fine though

<mripard_> paulk-collins: are you sure it's multi_v7?
<mripard_> you have no SoC configuration options enabled
<mripard_> just CONFIG_MULTIPLATFORM, but that's it.
<paulk-collins> mripard_, I don't need to mention that it doesn't boot
<paulk-collins> let me check a few things
<paulk-collins> ah right
<paulk-collins> nevermind then
<mripard_> yeah, well, it doesn't boot fro the same reason :)
