<ZirconiumX>
I've been a bit unwell recently, but I'm trying my best.
<clay_1>
I hope you get better, try staying in good spirits !
<clay_1>
have you had any progress in your altera project ?
<clay_1>
So, I am trying to run xc7frames2bit.cc and I dont have much success
<clay_1>
I think its due to the fact that I dont know how to run files in the $XRAY_ way that sf-slack has showed me. Can anyone help with that ?

clay_1: as a note, sf-slack is a bot
<ZirconiumX>
It's a bridge between this IRC channel and the Symbiflow Slack
<clay_1>
ZirconiumX oops:P
<clay_1>
So people that actually work for symbiflow will answer through that ?
<ZirconiumX>
I think it's a matter of preference
<ZirconiumX>
Possibly, though.
<clay_1>
ok, thank you :)
<ZirconiumX>
As for my Altera project - calling it "my" project when so much is being done by others feels wrong - we're making a fair amount of progress
<clay_1>
ok, my bad, thats great :)
<ZirconiumX>
It's going to end up being a massive EULA violation, but oh well
<clay_1>
isnt that the case with prjxray as well ?
<ZirconiumX>
That I don't know, as I haven't read the relevant EULA
<clay_1>
oh ok
<ZirconiumX>
But Quartus has an option that dumps the internal databases into plain text
<clay_1>
thats convenient
<ZirconiumX>
From there it's a case of auto-generating the relevant structs
<clay_1>
nice
<clay_1>
have you thought about how to deal with the possible EULA violation
<clay_1>
?
<ZirconiumX>
At that point we then have to figure out what much of the data means
<ZirconiumX>
Yes
<ZirconiumX>
The answer is "I don't know"
<clay_1>
hope it turns out to be fine
<ZirconiumX>
Icestorm and Trellis survive because apparently Lattice don't really care
<ZirconiumX>
But Xilinx and Altera very much do care
<clay_1>
and thats reasonable i think since they are the major players

%version
<ZirconiumX>
... Hmm, wonder what the command is for tpb
<ZirconiumX>
tpb: version
<tpb>
ZirconiumX: The current (running) version of this Supybot is 0.83.4.1. The newest version available online is 0.83.4.1.
<clay_1>
that looked bad
<ZirconiumX>
... That should get upgraded
<clay_1>
tpb ?
<ZirconiumX>
I'm presuming this bot is mithro's, in which case I recommend it gets updated to use Limnoria instead
<ZirconiumX>
Yeah
<clay_1>
I have no clue about that
<ZirconiumX>
Well anyway
<ZirconiumX>
I haven't got any direct legal advice, but the question boils down to how much of the raw data is copyrightable.
<ZirconiumX>
For example, you cannot claim copyright over a file that documents a chess game
<ZirconiumX>
But you *can* claim copyright over comments you add to it.
<ZirconiumX>
Because the game itself is raw data
<ZirconiumX>
But the comments are not.
<ZirconiumX>
So then, are natural characteristics of chips copyrightable?
<clay_1>
too much politics involved in that I guess
<clay_1>
they probably have whole teams of people working on how to exploit all that
<ZirconiumX>
Why can't we just hack in peace?
<clay_1>
hahahaha
<clay_1>
well I believe that this should be the case
<clay_1>
I mean there is transparency here
<ZirconiumX>
Unofficially I believe Lattice are permitting icestorm/x-ray, as they can make more money by people buying chips for an open toolchain than they lose by fewer people buying Diamond
<ZirconiumX>
*icestorm/trellis
<clay_1>
it makes sense
<clay_1>
but I doudt thats the case with altera/xilinx
