<hyperair> i think i fried my galaxy s3's charging port -- i've disconnected it and it still says charging
<hyperair> i power it off, disconnect the battery, wait 10 secs, reconnect it, and it comes back on saying it's charging.
<hyperair> (even while not plugged in)
<Kaik541> hyperair, my galaxy nexus used to do that
<Kaik541> look at the connector from the outside
<Kaik541> make sure the middle piece is flat
<hyperair> looks normal to me
<hyperair> the middle piece..
<hyperair> looks flat
<Kaik541> I had to ever so slightly adjust mine with a pair of those things you use to pull out splinters, I'm blanking on the word
<hyperair> pincers
<Kaik541> tweezers
<hyperair> oh
<hyperair> i'm poking it with a stapler right now
<hyperair> i mean a staple
<hyperair> Kaik541: when you plugged in a data cable, did it recognize it as a data cable?
<hyperair> Kaik541: mine doesn't.
<hyperair> it just get stuck reporting an amperage of 300mA
<hyperair> when i boot CM it seems to understand that it's not charging though
<hyperair> but still no data
dasunsrule32 has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<Kaik541> hyperair, hmm never had the issue show up like that
<Kaik541> dunno, sounds different
<Kaik541> good news is on samsung devices the charging port is a separate board so it's easy/cheap enough to replace
<hyperair> oh good
<hyperair> how much does it cost to replace?
<hyperair> is it covered by warranty, and do i have to triangle away or something before sending it in?
<Kaik541> oh I've no idea how much samsung would charge
<Kaik541> I was referring to DIY
<Kaik541> I doubt it'd be considered under warranty, you'd have to call and ask
<hyperair> hmm okay
<hyperair> DIY would be fine too i guess
<hyperair> how mcuh does a replacement charging port board thing cost?

<Leslie_> Hi
<frankdrey> Hi
<Leslie_> I currently have a i9300 and was wondering if someone can tell me how to check if it's rooted.
<Leslie_> I would like to install cm onto it
<frankdrey> "super user" anywhere?
<frankdrey> Oh
<frankdrey> Then it doesn't matter
<frankdrey> The process to install cm has nothing to do with root
<frankdrey> !device i9300
<bbqbot> frankdrey: Information for Samsung Galaxy S III: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/i9300_Info
<frankdrey> Guide there
<Leslie_> I bought the phone from a local cell phone store, new, but it doesn't seem to be running the store os
<frankdrey> Check in settings about
<Leslie_> Oh, I thought I had to root my phone to flash a custom rom
<Leslie_> How would I know if it's the stock os or not?
<frankdrey> No, rooting is a different process
<frankdrey> Cm comes rooted automatically
<frankdrey> Can you upload a screenshot or type the information there?

<Leslie_> I don't have the phone on me currently. I'll do it later, if you are still on this irc
<frankdrey> Aha OK
<frankdrey> Ill be *here* 24/7 (unless my internet dies) :p
<frankdrey> But maybe not physically here :p
<frankdrey> But ill see later if you say anything
<frankdrey> Wait, where exactly did you buy this phone?
<frankdrey> I'm asking cause there are fake clones...

<Leslie_> hi, i'm back
<frankdrey> hi
<Leslie_> i still don't have the phone, but i have some questions
<frankdrey> mhm
<Leslie_> so a phone does not have to be rooted to install a custom rom?
<frankdrey> no
<frankdrey> you need a custom recovery to install a custom rom
<Leslie_> oh
<frankdrey> in olden days, you install a custom recovery by rooting and flashing that way
<Leslie_> ah
<frankdrey> now, we have fastboot / download mode
<Leslie_> what's fastbooot/download mode
<Leslie_> cause i only know the old way
<Leslie_> i usedd to have a s2 and i have cm installed on that using the old way
<frankdrey> it's a special mode in which you can freely flash stuff
<Leslie_> can all phones use the fastboot/download mode? or just some?
<frankdrey> most samsung's have download mode
<frankdrey> most others have fastboot, but it's sometimes locked
<frankdrey> samsung's download mode is always unlocked
<Leslie_> ah i see
<Leslie_> how do i access that mode?

<Leslie_> tyty
<frankdrey> yup
<Leslie_> in the mean time, i'm just waiting for my dad to come home so i can get the i9300. my mom currently uses my s2, but it has a stable version of cm on it, so i don't want to bother messing with it
Vechter has joined #teamhacksung-support
<Leslie_> neither of them know english, so whenever they have a problem, they come to me, and i have to find a solution for it. the best solution is a stable release. hahah
<Vechter> Are there any sites that mirror the nightly builds for CM 10.2 i9100 version? I've been having tons of issues trying to get it from the cyanogenmod.org download page
<frankdrey> ah :P
<frankdrey> Vechter, goo.im
Anthony1s has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<Leslie_> so on the s2, the cm version is 10.2-20130820-experimental-hercules-alpha1. i'm assuming this is not a stable version?
<frankdrey> no :p
<frankdrey> that sounds worse than nightly xD
<Leslie_> HAHAHAHA. oh man. it's been pretty stable, though
<Leslie_> my mom has not been coming to be asking about stuff since i installed it
<frankdrey> alpha < beta < nightly < rc < stable
<frankdrey> yeah
<frankdrey> it doesn't mean 100% :p
<Leslie_> so if i wanted to install the 10.2 rc1, what would be the best method?
<frankdrey> my ex-tablet's nightlies were stabler than stable releases
<frankdrey> you most likely already have custom recovery
<frankdrey> just flash from custom recovery -> reboot to new recovery -> wipe all -> flash again
<Leslie_> yea. i have a custom recovery and it is rooted
<frankdrey> and don't forget gapps second time
<Leslie_> will wiping all lose all her apps and stuff?
<frankdrey> the first time is to update recovery, just in case, as new recoveries are usually included
<frankdrey> maybe you don't have to wipe...
<frankdrey> but it's really recommended
<frankdrey> dunno how "alpha" the original is
Vechter has quit [Quit: Page closed]
<frankdrey> you're welcome, Vechter :p
<Leslie_> ah i see. there is also a cm update under my about phone page. should i do that if i do not want to lose any of my mom's data?
<frankdrey> eh...that'll basically do the same thing, but automatically :P (and it won't wipe so yes, you'll keep data)
<frankdrey> but again, going from an alpha might not be so smooth, so backup just in case!
<Leslie_> how do i backup?
Anthony1s has joined #teamhacksung-support
<frankdrey> you can do a full nandroid backup in recovery, restoring that will get you back exactly how it was
<frankdrey> or you can just backup data/apps with something like helium
<Leslie_> i've previously tried a full nandroid backup. i backuped and restored from it, but it just screwed everything up for me.
