azonenberg: looking at some camping equipment for a 5 day camp (would be nice if i could use them more than once but eh, budget..), does this look reasonable? https://a.uguu.se/fxqs2RGMt2Ck.png

so two most improtant questions
<azonenberg>
where are you going aka what is the weather likely to be
<azonenberg>
and are you car/boat camping or carrying it all on your back?

pie_: also what are you hoping to use the space blankets for?
<azonenberg>
I would not ever recommend intending to use them, they should be a last resort backup only
<pie_>
azonenberg: the idea is to put it on top of the tent to keep is less hot

<pie_>
or so im told
<azonenberg>
where are you going? what's the weather like?
<pie_>
i wont have to carry the stuff for an extended period
<pie_>
im thinking i might need to buy some kind of backpack anyway...
<azonenberg>
well what i mean is, a sleeping bag you are leaving in camp vs carrying around with you is a very different design space
<azonenberg>
most of the cheap ones are heavy and physically large
<azonenberg>
optimizing for volume and weight means sacrificing warmth, low cost, or both
<azonenberg>
In my case I have a 5C rated bag that's quite compact but wasn't cheap
<azonenberg>
i can extend it down to -7C with a removable liner that i leave home in warmer weather
<azonenberg>
and if i wear a sweater and other stuff inside instead of sleeping in practically nothing like i usually do, i could at least survive going quite a bit below that although i might not enjoy it
<azonenberg>
and that's before adding the space blanket which is really meant to be used on someone else in an emergency but i could use on myself if i had to
<azonenberg>
There was an option to buy a -7C bag but i decided i didnt want the weight/bulk during the 3/4 of the year that doesn't get too cold
<azonenberg>
the modular system was slightly more expensive and heavy in the cold-weather configuration
<azonenberg>
as far as a pack, figure out what you'll be carrying and what it will weigh
<azonenberg>
Low-cost gear tends to be large and heavy
<pie_>
figures
<azonenberg>
I strongly recommend a pack with a hip strap if you're covering any kind of distance, the cheap school-style ones with shoulder straps only put all the weight on your arms and upper back
<azonenberg>
a well fitting pack puts most of the weight on your hip and lower spine and straight into the long bones of your legs, avoiding putting too much stress on muscles and smaller bones etc
<pie_>
yeah that sucks, im probably setting myself up for enough back problems as-is :P
<pie_>
im moving at the end of the month, and then im going to buy myself a proper chair damnit
<azonenberg>
As far as things to bring in the pack, think about what you plan to do and likely things that can go wrong (bad weather, taking the wrong trail, etc)
<pie_>
getting lost in the jungle of tents
<azonenberg>
Have more food and water than you intend to use, if you take a wrong turn and end up being out for four hours longer than intended it could be quite unpleasant
<azonenberg>
And some means of navigation as well
<azonenberg>
I dont like relying 100% on a GPS and prefer to have a compass and paper map as backup, but if you go down the wrong trail you want to be able to find your way back
<azonenberg>
Or if somebody gets hurt, knowing where to send help is nice
<pie_>
I dont expect to be straying any meaningful distance from the camp site, its just the quadrennial vampire burning
<azonenberg>
ah ok
<pie_>
but good to know
<azonenberg>
Some basic first aid gear is useful too. I'm not talking tourniquets and IV bags
<azonenberg>
but a couple of bandaids, some ibuprofen, etc
<azonenberg>
maybe a few gauze pads
<pie_>
that should be covered
<sensille>
(tick removal tool where necessary)
<pie_>
not that it hurts to bring extra
<azonenberg>
covered by who, is the question
<azonenberg>
and how far are they from you?
<azonenberg>
Not getting blood on your collectible con t-shirt is a nice thing
<pie_>
heh
<pie_>
i dont generally budget for collectible con shirts anyway >_>
<azonenberg>
For reference my lightweight "not going far from civilization" first aid kit is a little vacuum sealed plastic pouch that fits in a pants pocket and is about the size of my wallet but flatter and slightly wider
<pie_>
or the blood just makes it more authentic
<azonenberg>
and the one i carry when i'm looking for trouble is a large gym bag
<azonenberg>
there's quite the continuum
<pie_>
I can imagine
<pie_>
azonenberg: so basically, i think weight isnt really an issue here
<azonenberg>
Yeah
<pie_>
the only thing so far i figured i could maybe skimp is instead of getting an all out sleeping bag, just get one of those liners, because the weather should be good enough
<pie_>
(?)
<azonenberg>
I wouldn't go only liner unless it's really warm, but you can get a nice-weather bag
<pie_>
but i dont see any other variants so far
<pie_>
hm
<azonenberg>
that said in warm weather i often just sleep fully dressed on top of my bag
<pie_>
well a cursory look doesnt seem to yield particularly better results for something thats not so warm
<pie_>
yeah i just figured if i get a warm bag id just unzip or sleep on top
<pie_>
if this looks feasible ill just get my order in so i dont have to worry too much about getting everything on time
<pie_>
with respect to things going wrong, I cant think of anything other than rain
<tnt>
pie_: it really doesn't get that cold at night. It's often more the opposite.
<tnt>
But yeah, it does rain and there can be some fairly strong wind, so make sure you attach the stakes solidly in the ground.

<azonenberg>
pie_: yeah there's less room for problems if you're really close to civilization
<azonenberg>
its more an issue if you're hiking solo, fall 20 feet down a hill, and break your ankle
<azonenberg>
and nobody knows you're out there
<azonenberg>
it could be a while before anyone comes to get you...
<tnt>
Hehe yeah, here there is like 5000 other people around, including a dedicated CERT/medical team and a this year even a team with small gear to fix / patch-up your tent/camp equipment in case something is wrong. So this is more akin to camping in your garden for fun than going in the wild.
<freemint>
sensille, not exactly. My local hacker space does camping with network gear and internet too.
<sensille>
wireless or ethernet?
<freemint>
ethernet
<sensille>
:)
<freemint>
We even play fun games with networks gear like "battle switches" where we have some old HP 2524 and send SNMP packets which may turn of a port of the opponents switch or miss :)
<freemint>
when we set the down status the LEDs turn of :)
