ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <Foone>
good game to start with. I'd have recommended Solar Winds for personal history reasons but Keen4 is definitely a good one
<cr1901_modern>
Never played it, tbh
<Foone>
it's a mixed bag. it has some good ideas but the pacing is weird and it isn't nearly as deep as it wants to be, and the combat is repetitive (SPINNING!)
<Foone>
but it's got some great music and it definitely WANTS to be an awesome game.
<Foone>
and I have a lot of nostalgia for it and it was also the first game I tested when I got a soundcard for my first PC
<cr1901_modern>
Confession: I've never even beaten Doom
<cr1901_modern>
My favorite DOS game is probably Shadow Warrior, but it's... in REALLY bad taste in 2019
<cr1901_modern>
(and I won't play Ion Fury b/c the devs are transphobes)
<Foone>
I've never beaten it on DOS, but I played through it much later using gzdoom or something. probably with a few infinite ammo cheats
<Foone>
anyway enough talking about old games, I gotta go find an XT keyboard for @LuigiThirty so she can play... old games
<cr1901_modern>
Is she on IRC?

I need a last second ebay bot
<andlabs>
getting outbid in the last two seconds and not having time to write a higher bid is not fun
<andlabs>
if you have a suggestion highlight me or I will miss it thanks

This is why you're supposed to put the actual true maximum amount of money you're willing to pay when you make your first bid :/... this is also why I almost never do auctions
<cr1901_modern>
though if I didn't snipe it w/ 2 seconds left, I would not have my 5150.

andlabs: i've always used auctionsniper
<m4t>
thats probably what the person bidding 5s before the auction is using too

m4t: serious question: what *does* that gain you over just putting your true maximum price in as your bid upfront? eBay doesn't charge you your full bid if nobody actually bids it up to that level, even 3s before closing
<emily>
maybe I'm a sucker and missing out by doing that, but I want to understand why at least

heh
<andlabs>
either way I guess we lost another copy of C64 Sound Studio
<andlabs>
and with HVMSC in disrepair I'll never know what that was like
<andlabs>
oh well

catch people like andlabs off guard
<m4t>
;)
<m4t>
er, that was a response to emily "serious question: what *does* that gain you over just putting your true maximum price in as your bid upfront?" btw
<Foone>
in the scrollback I saw "rackmount" and "ym2612" near each other and my first reaction was WHO IS BUILDING RACK MOUNTED OPN2s?
<Ultrasauce>
does eurorack count
<Foone>
no.
<Ultrasauce>
what about eurorack mounted in a 19" rack
<Foone>
although I was talking with some peoples recently after they'd just racked a 1U server and I was idly wondering what the oldest PC racked in a datacenter is
<Foone>
and I remembered I've got like a 3U (maybe 4U?) case that has an ISA backplane and a pentium or maybe 486 board in it
<Foone>
so I could totally rack some yamaha sound chips with that
<Foone>
and possibly downgrade the SBC to a 286 while I'm at it
<Foone>
I don't think I have any 8086 ISA SBCs but I'm sure they exist
<Foone>
which makes me wonder about another thing: if you have one of the non-PNP soundblasters with the fully configurable ports, are all resources configurable? so like... could your system have TWO soundblasters?
<Foone>
assuming you weren't conflicting with anything else, naturally.
<andlabs>
if you enter a true max bid, doesn't it just cause anyon else's bid to be automatically outbid?
<andlabs>
== you don't get a chance to snipe at the last second
<m4t>
it's about not being able to make a reactive bid
<m4t>
or to make it seem like nobody else is interested so they place a lower bid and let their guard down
<m4t>
you can also have it do second chances, where it will up the bid up to 5 or 6 times in the appropriate increment for the current price
<m4t>
doesn't cost very much. i have a 10$ credit from like, 2009. theyve tried to expire the funds multiple times but i've gotten the balance reinstated
