ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths
<andlabs>
so why do we need to clone the roland mpu again?
* cr1901_modern
shrugs, Idk anything about the roland MPU I'm afraid
<cr1901_modern>
sorry forgot to answer
<cr1901_modern>
andlabs: If I'm honest, I've never used the DB-15 on any sound cards for anything except joysticks
<andlabs>
I don't think I've ever had a computer with one
<andlabs>
even in the early 90s
<cr1901_modern>
? Game port should've been pretty common even back then
<cr1901_modern>
It's probably the simplest "useful" ISA card you can make. It was meant to be used as a slow-DAQ unit (which AIUI, is why reading it is such a terrible timing dance)
<cr1901_modern>
whitequark: Even omigen was good enough for me for most platform abstraction tasks. I haven't written enough nmigen code to trigger edge cases for portability yet
<whitequark>
well it's less edge cases and
<whitequark>
more things that just aren't implemented in the abstraction

I'm sure I'll (politely) complain about it when I get there :P

<whitequark>
i'm not sure if you will
<whitequark>
i haven't seen a generic abstraction over XDR IO by multiple vendors before
<ej5>
oh yeah who makes 5V compatible CPLDs anymore?
<ej5>
apparently atmel does, but then you get to use wincupl as the dev environment lol
<cr1901_modern>
ej5: No one. Use level shifters.
<cr1901_modern>
well, that's imprecise
<ej5>
it's all a plot by TI
<cr1901_modern>
you want a 5v rail CPLD right?
<cr1901_modern>
xc9500 is 5V tolerant
<ej5>
TI: we know all our industrial customers still use 5v. so let's discontinue everything useful in 5v except for the level shifters
<ej5>
xc9500 isn't 5v anymore, they discontinued the last of the 5v versions
<cr1901_modern>
even the 5v-tolerant ones?
<cr1901_modern>
ej5: ICE40 is unofficially 5V tolerant as well
<cr1901_modern>
you're not supposed to do it, but it'll work

For ppl in the US: Because we have a stupid egotistical fuck of a president and a spineless legislative branch, now may be a good time to get as many Yamaha chips or other retro imports you want into your hands ASAP: https://twitter.com/Nash076/status/1172692510684188672
<andlabs>
it just can't get any shit done when one of it is controlled by sycophants who benefit directly from the president
<andlabs>
also I will forever be frustrated by trump's racist views on china invalidating legitimate reasons to be concerned about china but this is probably not related to china
<andlabs>
but I do remember this
<andlabs>
trump only conceded the government shutdown when his approval rates dropped below 40%
<andlabs>
if this happens, you can bet they'll drop
<andlabs>
he can try to convince us that we're winning this trade war (and he will believe it even in the face of overwhelming evidence) but once people feel the pinch, so will he
<andlabs>
if you want to bring manufacturing back to the US, this is not how you do it
<andlabs>
(though we already still do a bunch of manufacturing, just not in any industry anyone cares about)
<andlabs>
and corporations will charge more if they don't get to treat the human laborers like slaves (because not treating humans like slaves costs money), which is *why* the manufacturing for shit we do care about has gone overseas
<andlabs>
it all comes back to capitalism
<andlabs>
good night
