<lord|> I'm a bit confused about how the swarm works
<lord|> so /ip4/104.131.131.82/tcp/4001/ipfs/QmaCpDMGvV2BGHeYERUEnRQAwe3N8SzbUtfsmvsqQLuvuJ is one of the bootstrap peers, right
<lord|> what is the data at the end of that?
<lord|> why can't I just `ipfs swarm connect /ip4/104.131.131.82/tcp/4001` without that extra stuff?
larpanet has joined #ipfs
<lord|> and how do I get all that data for my own local node, so I can help another node bootstrap and instantly connect to me directly?
<lord|> oh I think I just figured it out
<lord|> `ipfs swarm addr local --id`
<lord|> the data is called the peer ID

<engdesart> Yes.
<natewalck> hrmmm. Does ipfs exist in any yum repos? ;)
<natewalck> installing it via tar file doesn't seem ideal
Krenium has left #ipfs [#ipfs]
<lord|> wait, what's the command to copy a hash to your local store
<lord|> i.e. mirroring it and providing a copy of it to your peers?
<lord|> derp
<lord|> couldn't find the correct terminology
<lord|> it's pinning
<deltab> natewalck: it's changing fairly rapidly, and not much depends on it, so that's probably why it hasn't been packaged yet
<natewalck> @deltab I guess that makes sense. No one has built CI for this yet I assume
tbenett has joined #ipfs
<natewalck> Theoretically, it should be possible to put the yum repo in IPFS itself and use gateway to access it, no?
<deltab> yes, I think some people are experimenting with that
<natewalck> I got sidetracked as I was writing chef code for installing and configuring IPFS
<natewalck> and I realized its not really in a package repo anywhere

<ACardote> Hey guys! Anyone up for an mdns discovery debug?
<lgierth> ACardote: there's indeed a few bugs in go-ipfs's mdns code
jmill has joined #ipfs
<lgierth> let me file issues for my little list, actually
<Icefoz> natewalck: I just tried shoving the debian repo into IPFS, it works but the HTTP gateway breaks all the symlinks which makes things not work properly.
jungly has joined #ipfs
<natewalck> Hah. That could be a problem
<natewalck> So some assembly required
<Icefoz> Doesn't seem like it should be hard to fix though.
<Icefoz> Just fix the HTTP thingy to allow symlinks.
<natewalck> Instead of symlinks it’ll have to be part of the hash tree
<ACardote> lgierth I'm happy to do some debug, but I want to understand if I am supposed to use it the way I am using it. I am starting up IPFS and adding '/ip4/0.0.0.0/tcp/4001' as an entry in the 'swarm' config. Next I add another network interface and bring the one that was up when I started IPFS down.
<natewalck> Oh I see.
<ACardote> My expectation is that IPFS does discovery on the new interface. Is that correct?
<ACardote> I can see that if I ipfs ping another node through this new interface it works fine and adds the peer do the peer list
<lgierth> ACardote: that's one of the bugs on my list -- it does announces only on the "first" interface
<lgierth> e.g. on my laptop right now that's tun0 from openvpn
<ACardote> gotcha! :)
<lgierth> that's usually the interface that it also prints first on startup
<lgierth> i'll post an issue url here in a few
<lgierth> that you can subscribe to for updates, or take a stab at it yourself
<ACardote> awesome, thanks!

<dexteruk> Hi Everyone, i have noticed that i add an image on one machine, i call it from another IPFS node all is greate
<dexteruk> a few days later the same image is no longer availiable on the remote node
<dexteruk> until i restart ipfs daemon on the orginal machine
<lgierth> dexteruk: yeah the remote node has to pin it - otherwise it's just cashed
<lgierth> *cached
<dexteruk> i understand the ideal of pin
<dexteruk> but that means i would have to pin everything every time i add it
<lgierth> ok, then it's likely some little bitswap bug, where it gets into a weird state
<lgierth> are you using the latest version? (0.4.13)
upperdeck has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<lgierth> (yeah agreed - the very idea of pinning is that you pin it once, and it stays)
<dexteruk> what i want is the remote node always keep it without the need for pin
<lgierth> ah
<dexteruk> yes i know but for example i add an image
<lgierth> well the remote node will have to pin it once
<dexteruk> then for each image i would ahve to pin it
<lgierth> yes, or you create a big directory with all images and pin that
<dexteruk> yes i know, but that does not help when im creating a decentalised page, each page will be created at different times and different images
<dexteruk> i know i can write it into the API to pin it
tombusby has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
<dexteruk> but i was just wondering if i can tell a node globally pin everything that is called from you
<dexteruk> but i was just wondering if i can tell a node globally pin everything that is called through you
<lgierth> you can write a tiny web service that does just that
Jesin has joined #ipfs
<dexteruk> well thats where im going
<lgierth> some node *will* have to store the data
<lgierth> until filecoin is reality, then there's the filecoin network
tombusby has joined #ipfs
<dexteruk> yes i understand that about filecoin
<dexteruk> i saw in the configuration there is an experimental option called filestore
<lgierth> or you can somehow coerce users into keeping their browsers open :)
<lgierth> yeah
upperdeck has joined #ipfs
<dexteruk> i could find any information to tell me what it does
<lgierth> that's useful if you're dealing with large volumes of data and don't want to duplicate it from your filesystem into ipfs's store
<dexteruk> i didnt know if that would be something to do with this
<lgierth> no not really much to do with pinning
<dexteruk> ah ok
leeola has joined #ipfs
<dexteruk> ok cool so i will just add it to my api when it sees /ipfs/* to pin it
<lgierth> turns out i don't have my list with me - will write down the other known mdns issues later when i'm back hom
<ACardote> thanks, lgierth!
<dexteruk> I dont know if there are developers in this group but great job, and im loving ipfs i hope soon to understand enought to start help contribute some things back

<grandy> hello, just playing with pubsub, and i have a data stream that is working just fine with the go software. But I wanted to consume it from javascript. Oddly I'm getting this message: Error: listen EADDRNOTAVAIL that points to the IP of the server generating the data stream with port 4001
<grandy> can anyone suggest how to debug this further? I assume the server is actually reachable because i'm watching the data stream in in another terminal
<grandy> it does this simply on starting the IPFS js node, even if I am not making any API calls, so it seems that the error is happening during the initialization steps

<daviddias> grandy: by the error type seems that you already have something listening on the same port, could that be it?

<zautomata1> was their any experiments from netflix to use ipfs?
<zautomata1> were there*
vmx has joined #ipfs
<r0kk3rz> i dont think ipfs would have enough DRM for netflix
<zautomata1> whats DRM?
<r0kk3rz> digital rights management
<r0kk3rz> basically netflix doesnt want you copying their content
<Icefoz> What about streaming content over IPFS in general?
Neomex has joined #ipfs
<Icefoz> I guess if you have a way to get an index of blocks in an IPLD document you can just fetch them as you need thm.
<Icefoz> Hard to do much quality assurance there though.
<whyrusleeping> Icefoz: live streaming? or streaming pre-existing content?
<Icefoz> I was thinking of pre-existing stuff.
<whyrusleeping> ah
<Icefoz> Live streaming would be harder, I suppose.
<whyrusleeping> yeah, your client would have to be a little smarter, but you could do it
<Icefoz> Via pubsub, or some other mechanism?
<whyrusleeping> oh, live streaming would be hard, but you could probably use pubsub
<whyrusleeping> with pre-existing stuff, you could have a data structure that has different resolutions of content all bundled together
<r0kk3rz> someone was talking about doing live streaming recently
<whyrusleeping> so you can easily select which stream to view
<whyrusleeping> r0kk3rz: oh? that would be a fun experiment
<r0kk3rz> yeah i dont think they gave much details about it sadly
