ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths

OF COURSE there's a synthesizer circle jerk
<Wohali>
note: i do NOT have a reddit account
<cr1901_modern>
Same
<Wohali>
someone passed this along to me elsewheres in IRC
<Wohali>
whitequark: how do i get access to your library
<cr1901_modern>
You have to go through three grueling trials, each worse than the last, in order to complete a ritual which will open the gates for yo- she'll paste the link in a few mins most likely
<cr1901_modern>
wq managed to find the OPL2 Application Manual somewhere. I'd not been able to duplicate her success. I think I need to get angrier when searching for docs.

My name is Wohali. My quest is to seek the grail. My favourite colou......

cr1901_modern: daemons
<Wohali>
well, demons.
<Wohali>
dragons, whatever.
<ej5>
needs more pictures
<cr1901_modern>
Mmmm fair point
<cr1901_modern>
Wohali: What's this about dragons?
<ej5>
also people RT the weirdest shit, you can post pics of all sorts of cool projects but ultimately they're fascinated by the IBM thinkpad butterfly keyboard
<Wohali>
cr1901_modern: descending into the pit of vanity hell - dragons be here

I have not reached the level of enlightenment required to not care :'(
<cr1901_modern>
yes I agree I'm peering into the abyss
<Wohali>
or, if you prefer musicals, a line from Evita: "I thought the more that loved me / The more loved I'd be / But such things cannot be multiplied."
<cr1901_modern>
Wohali: Last musical I saw was... Les Mis in 2008? lol
<cr1901_modern>
in Walnut St Theater
<Wohali>
pretty sure i saw evita in 1992
<Wohali>
tho there is a movie version now.
<ej5>
also i suspect that most new follows happen through profile clicks
<ej5>
i've had a few direct follows from tweets but most people click the profile first..."who is this guy anyway"
<cr1901_modern>
I'm just some guy, really
<cr1901_modern>
I do EE stuff, but I don't tweet about it much
<ej5>
it may also help to have your most eye catching or most RT'd tweet pinned
<ej5>
so profile click->oh that's neat->follow
<ej5>
personally i usually scroll down for a while to see the S/N ratio before i follow someone
<cr1901_modern>
Tbh, I'm surprised the politics RTs haven't scared you off yet
<cr1901_modern>
lmao... a few times I've been told "I follow you for tech content"
<cr1901_modern>
ej5: My pinned tweet is whatever my most recent blog post is
<cr1901_modern>
In theory, I should've been done one in December 2018
<Ultrasauce>
i just aggressively follow anyone who says anything interesting on irc, and the people they @
<cr1901_modern>
In practice, I lost interest and am sitting on a half complete "how to get your Pi Zero onto the Internet (pppd)" post
<ej5>
i have a no politics rule for my techy stuff online
<ej5>
it's just way too polarizing, basically you're playing with fire
<cr1901_modern>
Ultrasauce: Basically, my Dunbar's number the definitely-random-and-not-specifically chosen number 286.
<cr1901_modern>
So I keep followings to around that number
<cr1901_modern>
ej5: World's already burning, so no need to be cautious :P (okay I'll quit it)
<Wohali>
i try and keep my personal politics out of my tech posts, but sometimes the worlds collide and i feel it's unjust to pretend there is no politics when there bloody well is
* cr1901_modern
nods
<Wohali>
i mean, even bob barker used to tell you to get your pets spayed or neutered on the price is right.
<cr1901_modern>
He also had a number of models sue him for harrassment
<Wohali>
yup
<Wohali>
so, not apolitical.
* Wohali
continues stuffing board with hundreds, literally hundreds of differently valued resistors
<Wohali>
:/
<cr1901_modern>
there's an open PnP machine in the works I think
<cr1901_modern>
open Plug-n-Pray
<cr1901_modern>
err pick-n-place
<Wohali>
feedign reels sucks too
<Wohali>
esp when you need 40+ of them for a board
<cr1901_modern>
I'm... useless for any more work tonight lol
<Wohali>
exhausted? drunk? high?
<cr1901_modern>
Former. Don't drink or smoke, b/c I'm boring lmao
<Wohali>
mm
<ej5>
hundreds of resistors? one time i swapped around 600 LEDs (total) on several boards.
<ej5>
</oneup>
<ej5>
hmm, i should play around with my SP-0256.
<cr1901_modern>
aaand arrow was cancelled ._.
<cr1901_modern>
that has nothing to do w/ anything, but shocked me
<cr1901_modern>
ej5: Oh that's a cool chip
<cr1901_modern>
reminds me of the mask ROM 6800s that Radio shack used to sell that understood "left, right, up, down, stop, go, on, and off"
<Wohali>
ej5: per board. i am stuffing 20 of them.
ej5 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<Lord_Nightmare>
Wohali: i think i found some more info about the card, and a surprising possible link
<Lord_Nightmare>
the publications about the "Logistics Synthesizer" in IEEE 'computer' magazine in march 1977 (before the WCCF conference which was in april) list an address as well as a name, for contacting them
<Lord_Nightmare>
the address is a house, so unless I start digging into property records that's likely a dead end
<Lord_Nightmare>
but the name is very interesting: "John Ross"
<Lord_Nightmare>
there's a famous electronics electronics tinkerer named John Ross, who in 1980, working in LA-based "Western Technologies" went to a local surplus dealer called "Electro Mavin" and bought a whole pile of 1"(?) CRTs and tried to figure out something to do with them. This design project eventually became the Vectrex!
<Lord_Nightmare>
I'm not sure they're the same person, but the date, location, and skillset all match up
<Lord_Nightmare>
the vectrex john ross is (sort of like inversephase) living out of a camper he built himself out of a volvo, with a plastic in-ground water cistern and a tent attached to the roof
<Lord_Nightmare>
there's also a john ross who was working with cynthia and mark "S.A.M. co-author" barton at cyndustries on analog rackmount synth modules, again, not sure its the same person
<Lord_Nightmare>
but cyndustries was located in an LA suburb as well
<Lord_Nightmare>
the house that Logistics was based in was also in an LA suburb
<Wohali>
i can't blame him to get off of the net
<Wohali>
ahhh cyndustries
<Lord_Nightmare>
so now i'm trying to figure out whether i should email Tom Sloper (who also worked on the vectrex) and ask him if he recognizes John Ross from the picture in the stanford magazine from WCCF
<Wohali>
i haven't talked to cynthia in.....oh 15 years?
<Lord_Nightmare>
I heard some very not nice things about cyndustries ripping people off
<Wohali>
i know times got tough, early on i think they were fine
<Lord_Nightmare>
if you still have contact with cynthia, maybe she knows if the john ross she worked with in 2005 was the same one from the vectrex, and if he's the same one from the WCCF picture
