(like, if I want to publish multiple git repositories over ipfs without having to republish everything on each git repo change, so that repos can live "isolated" from each other)

wouldn't that work with directories?
<ekleog>
that would require all the git repos to be in the same directory, and to publish again a ipns record at each change to any of the repos, no? this sounds like a lot, especially if we were to imagine a large provider doing so this would mean the ipns would be updated all the time
<ekleog>
no?

hm. i'm not sure how it works

Also, how safe is ipns wrt. key loss? Is it possible to backup the secret key somewhere? Better even, is it possible to have an offline recovery key to recover access to the ipns domain in case the server is compromised?

iow, is there more doc about ipns somewhere I didn't find?

<Mateon1>
Or maybe not
<ekleog>
Mateon1: hmm, so that'd be good for key loss, but not for key compromise :/ I guess it would require an additional layer of indirection, like "find the latest key for this ipns" then "find the latest ipfs object for this key"
<ekleog>
this way there could be automated services that publish to ipns without endangering the domain name
<Mateon1>
Okay, it is in the config, however only in the file, unaccessible via `ipfs config show`
<Mateon1>
At Identity.PrivKey
<ekleog>
hmm ok, thanks for this!
<Mateon1>
"Error: cannot show or change private key through API"
<Mateon1>
Oh my god, IPNS is so slow. I wish there was an option (maybe in the extensions) that allowed to resolve the IPNS name to an IPFS hash.
<Mateon1>
I believe, that currently, IPNS looks up the name for every single resource, (or at least every page load)
<Mateon1>
That defeats the purpose of local caching

jgantunes: any updates with ipfsd-ctl?
<daviddias>
would be super useful for the factory thing I'm building for js-ipfs-api :)
<daviddias>
balboah: yes! :)
<jgantunes>
daviddias: sorry for the delay with it but this week has been awful. I started working on replacing the subcommander module with execa. Been using dignifiedquire branch while this isn't merged https://github.com/sindresorhus/execa/pull/53
<daviddias>
oh, nice!
<jgantunes>
after that it's only a matter of more tests and better documentation
<dignifiedquire>
cool :)
<daviddias>
all good
<daviddias>
sounds good! I'm looking forward to be able to use the new ipfsd-ctl

dignifiedquire I'm not 100% sure, I would probably need to take a closer look at it but I think it may solve it. By looking at the description it looks to be an issue with how fork handles relative paths and in the new version of js-ipfsd-ctl we'll use the absolute path to invoke the daemon

i can repro by running an 0.4.2 daemon with a 0.4.3-rc client
<whyrusleeping>
LumberTech: are you sure the daemon you have running is the same binary as the `ipfs` youre calling add with?

can I redirect this folder to my external 1TB HD?

<Mateon1>
kuchikuu: Set IPFS_PATH=$path_to_hdd
<kuchikuu>
remove the folder, and make a link to the HDD as ~/.ipfs?
<kuchikuu>
aha
<Mateon1>
I believe `ipfs init --help` tells this
<Mateon1>
It does
<kuchikuu>
ok I will check

speaking of filecoin, i'm working on an ethereum contract that works in a similar way with challenges, until we make our blockchain with maybe a proof of hdd capacity (POC) mining algo to go with challenges and put/get tx's
<voxelot>
going to try and build a prototype platform on top of the contract, get paid eth to run an ipfs daemon maybe?
<kuchikuu>
I mean.... Mateon1, it's an USB storage 1.6 TB by Verbatim
<Mateon1>
I wish there was BTRFS support on Windows. Unfortunately there's only EXT2 and 3
<kuchikuu>
so I set the path to "/run/media/kuchikuu/VERBATIM HD/ipfs"?
<Mateon1>
kuchikuu: That should work, if that's where it's mountet
<Mateon1>
mounted*
<Mateon1>
On Windows I use IPFS_PATH=D:\ipfs
<kuchikuu>
hmmmm... but if somehow (or on purpose) I change the HDD name to let's say "storage", how can I later on update the ipfs program to recognise the change in name? (asking just in case)
<kuchikuu>
I just update the path huh?
<kuchikuu>
export IPFS_PATH=new_path; and then run the deamon?
<Mateon1>
kuchikuu: It shouldn't really be an issue to change the path. I believe you might have to change one optionin the config, maybe
<kuchikuu>
Okay :)
<Mateon1>
The Datastore.Path, however it doesn't seem to be doing anything at the moment
<kuchikuu>
Hmmm, the path has a space in it... I have a bad feelings about it
<kuchikuu>
:P
<kuchikuu>

So guys, I know I'm disturbing the peace here on IRC, but I have one question that makes me think a bit. How does ipfs handles trolls? What if someone adds a HUUUGE file or a lot of similar files with a single-bit differenc? I think without proper mechanics this would flood the HDDs' capacity, right?

I think there should be a "common misconceptions" list about IPFS, regarding permanence (not magically accessible forever), not downloading/sharing things you didn't request, etc.
