I tried to pin an object that is not in the merkledag format, but I get an error. Is this the expected behavior?
<jakobvarmose>
If you want to test: ipfs pin add -r=false QmdqupJt5E4hMUxvLRNpL94AqhqFYwsUrSrgnEw4CXwuYt

I can load it with `ipfs block get` but not `ipfs object get` or `ipfs get`

daviddias: getting js-ipfs-api smaller will be tricky though
<dignifiedquire>
daviddias oh boy, we need to split up ipfs-merkle-dag, js-ipfs-api include the full dag-service, which links to web-crypto, which adds lots of dependencies

<daviddias>
btw dignifiedquire, when you update aegir, you don't have to tell me, greenkeeper makes sure to tell me that at least 50 times xD
<dignifiedquire>
:D
<daviddias>
dignifiedquire: yeah, like block and block-service
<haad>
...if only we had a thin wrapper over the http api for js-ipfs-api ;)
<dignifiedquire>
if only making http requests would be simple
<daviddias>
haad: I welcome you to hack on the js-ipfs-api and get the http-api to response nicely
martinBrown has quit [Quit: -]
<daviddias>
it is actually quite a feat to make it all work
<dignifiedquire>
daviddias: so turns out the splitting is not the big issue, webcrypto is a gigantic package, that we bring in only to do sha256 hashes
<haad>
looking at that issue, I can't tell what the technical problems are (eg. related to what dignifiedquire said about http request)
<daviddias>
weren't we using libp2p-crypto with node-forge all the things for the hash
<dignifiedquire>
not in js-ipfs-api which uses merkl-dag which in turn uses multihashing which uses webcrypto
<dignifiedquire>
which is not modular at all
<dignifiedquire>
we really need dead code elimination :(
<dignifiedquire>
daviddias: were all the stress tests passing from interface-stream-muxer before in spdy?
<daviddias>
yes
<daviddias>
in spdy, always

well, if ipfs has objects like git (blob, tree etc) and in a tree object there is a list of {hash, file_name, permissions} like git, i will have N tree objects poinitng the same hash for the same file, but if i want to change the *name* of the file, how ipfs can keep track of that? i mean, i cannot traverse *all* the tree objects containing the file name..

Hi
<konubinix>
I am not sure I understand correctly the NAT traversal aspect of ipfs
<konubinix>
I have an ipfs daemon running on my local network, but it looks like I cannot connect to it from outside the network
<konubinix>
I guess that was the point of NAT traversal, isn't it?

Can anyone here get it ?

There is something wrong in my understanding of NAT traversal I think
rgrinberg has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]

konubinix, I also had some problems with transferring files from my local computer (behind NAT) to my vps. But if I first transferred a small file in the other direction they would find eachother and it would work
<jakobvarmose>
So if you download this file QmcnkDJj8kKrecq9xDHvDokfUSLV6Uue8CeypAkKdb3vqb from my vps, I could probably get your file afterwards

anyone have any idea how much bandwidth pinning takes up?

It has to take up some, since it announces to the DHT or whatever

so I guess I'm looking for something like how many kbps per kilopin or something

[go-ipfs] whyrusleeping created feat/disable-cat-gc (+1 new commit): https://git.io/v61Ef
<dignifiedquire>
mikeal: what exactly do you mean? init of the raw webrtc connection, or of an ipfs connection in general?
<mikeal>
webrtc in general, but it matters for libp2p and others
<dignifiedquire>
usually we try to make it possible that anyone can dial to anyone, there is of course the limitation on websocket connections, that you have to dial from the browser out
<dignifiedquire>
you could disable accepting connections from peers on the libp2p swarm level
<mikeal>
i'm writing a swarm actually
flyingzumwalt1 has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
computerfreak has joined #ipfs
<mikeal>
and i'm just trying to figure out if i algorithimically say "given two nodes one should be the initiator in the swarm"
<mikeal>
that that will be alright
<dignifiedquire>
which modules are you interfacing with atm?
<mikeal>
SimplePeer directly
<dignifiedquire>
right, so in libp2p there is the distinction between a dialer and a listener, to describe this asymmetry that someone has to start establishing the connection/protcol
<dignifiedquire>
but because usually everyone uses the same code all nodes end up with the code for dialing and listening
<dignifiedquire>
you could of course change that to either use different code on either side or guard it with a config
<dignifiedquire>
(not sure I'm answering the right question :/)

<ipfsbot>
go-ipfs/fix/fuse/osx-cfg-check 11db8f4 Jeromy: fuse: make osxfuse check config check more permissive...
<mikeal>
dignifiedquire: ya, so my problem is that once a node is connected to a "swarm" it finds out about all the other nodes in the network and also tells the other nodes about it
<mikeal>
so everyone tries to connect to that node, and that node tries to connect to it
<mikeal>
sorry, that node tries to connect to all of them

<daviddias>
mikeal: there is where stream multiplexing and libp2p-swarm comes into play
<daviddias>
idealy you just need a conn, but since it is impossible (without a strong mediator) to tell if someone is dialing to you
<daviddias>
you just let it pass
<daviddias>
if two conns are established
<daviddias>
you can select one to be the one that you use to open new streams
<dignifiedquire>
a wild david appears :)
<daviddias>
and let the other peer phase out the other one
