What exactly are these?

does it make sense to put a git repo into ipfs?
<chrono[m]>
I'm currently playing a bit with ipfs again (primarily to look at peermaps) but I thought it may also be a good way to distribute https://github.com/apollo-ng/cloudmap
<chrono[m]>
instead of (ab)using GH as CDN
<victorbjelkholm_>
chrono[m], yeah, I think it makes a lot of sense
<victorbjelkholm_>
there are some tools for putting the actual git repository into ipfs as well, not just the contents of the repository
<chrono[m]>
I haven't understood the details under the hood, I just wanted to avoid creating unneeded overhead
<chrono[m]>
is there some type of versioning internally in ipfs, i.e. if I update a file every three hours, will there be only the last one available or is it possible to access prior versions as well?

chrono[m], let's say you run "ipfs add myFile" once every three hours, you'll only get a new hash when the file changed, otherwise it'll be the same. If you want to access previous versions, you'd have to save the versions somewhere, like appending to a textfile everytime it changed

victorbjelkholm_: ah, ic, thanks for the explanation. I'll have a look into putting the whole repo into ipfs - maybe someone else will offer to pin it as well

anyone here checked out hypergolix
<fleeky__>
looks a lot like ipfs ,
ipt has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Mateon1>
fleeky__: From an extremely quick glance, it seems that hypergolix fills a different use case. It allows to create many small networks for sharing encrypted data, rather than one massive network where everybody serves everybody.
<fleeky__>
yeah its definitely not exactly the same
<fleeky__>
but it seems like it atleast relies heavily on a dht and hashes for objects
<fleeky__>
also the programmability of objects seems like something useful for ipfs
<fleeky__>
i didnt see the part about creating many small networks though ill have to look further into it

fleeky__: Well, there doesn't seem to be one global network from what I've seen
<Mateon1>
It's more similar to I2P than IPFS, just aimed at IOT devices
<Mateon1>
Content is stored on other nodes in the network, but in encrypted form

Still trying to understand IPLD: On http://ipld.io/ at 60% of the document, it says “ipld cat --json QmCCC...CCC/cat.jpg”. Why does this yield the content of cat.jpg instead of the link/mode/owner dictionary above it?
<bronger>
I mean, cat.jpeg maps to "cat.jpg": {"link": …, "mode": …, "owner"}. I would expect that QmCCC...CCC/cat.jpg/link yields the content of the JPEG.
