<dzham> dev-eng. that’s so me. except I don’t wear t-shirts, and I don’t blow people :)
<stellar-slack>
<sacarlson> I'm seeing a lot of new faces in here and in #dev, so @eva and all the folks at Stellar must be doing something right. always nice to see new faces.

<alanmcsherrythesecond> Hi, been reading the website - looks great! A question about the stellar ledger and it's expected growth - where would I find some discussion/answers on this? How quickly is it expected to grow? Are all transactions eventually recorded everywhere? Thanks!
<stellar-slack>
<alanmcsherrythesecond> (by 'everywhere' I mean on every stellar node)
<stellar-slack>
<sacarlson> grow as in Lumens supply? 1% per year
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> @sacarlson: tx history
<stellar-slack>
<alanmcsherrythesecond> ... no just grow as in number of mega bytes disk space to store ....
<stellar-slack>
<sacarlson> oh ok, well as it seems optional to keep the history on each node I'm not sure
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> @alanmcsherrythesecond: definitely not stored in all the nodes
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> Right now I think there are four history archives?
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> sdf has three, and lab has one
<stellar-slack>
<sacarlson> my node has been running for about 7 days and it's up to 500meg now
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> is that the db, or the buckets?
<stellar-slack>
<sacarlson> just the database
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> public is ~40MB, test is ~130 MB for me. Postgres.
<stellar-slack>
<alanmcsherrythesecond> ... ok. Ty. I'm coming at this from a bitcoin blockchain understanding so my questions might not be sensible, but with stellar is there a single global ledger? If I run a node will I end up storing the transactions transacted in the latest Nigeria project? (just as an example)
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> There’s one official public ledger
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> So yeah, you’d end up with all of it
<stellar-slack>
<alanmcsherrythesecond> ok. Got it, thanks. Is there any kind of checkpointing/pruning strategy, or is that something for the future?
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> I can’t seem to find the link, but nodes are basically of four types… validating or not, history archiving or not

<eva> Thanks @sacarlson! Seems like it’s a lot of interest coming from the Nigeria news :)
<stellar-slack>
<eva> @dzham dev evangelism is so misunderstood, imo. This FOSS talk I recently attended suggested that “marketing” is basically a 4-letter word in open source software, and I tend to agree. But it doesn’t have to be, if people would do it better. And yeah, I’m still in SF holding down the fort :)
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> Keywords like Financial, Transaction, Money, Loan, Remittance, Payments. . . would have made someone think http://steller.org|steller.org is another Startup or Ventures going to Banking Business. Due to that, I took my time to go through almost of pages on http://stellar.org|stellar.org and I think in summary, http://stellar.org|stellar.org is simply about "open and accessible common financial platform to e
<stellar-slack>
will know that it, it's not about where the core team are working from (Nigeria or anywhere) it's just a "common financial platform of the people, build by the people, and for the profit of all.
<stellar-slack>
<eva> Hey @vogue20033, thanks very much for the feedback. Where did you first start reading about Stellar? We did our best to make the home page clear about what Stellar is for (that it’s a *platform* for those services. Do you have suggestions on how to make that clearer? PS: I’ve removed your pin - to clarify, pinned messages are meant to be for something important/helpful for the entire channel. For example, a f

there, or a link to docs in #dev. A general comment typically won’t belong in a pinned message.
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> @eva: my apologies for the pinned msg.
<stellar-slack>
<eva> No problem @vogue20033 :)
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> I actually got to know about Stellar from CCHUB (Nigeria)
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> It's during the UX/UI presentation last week Thursday, and I wanted to attend the developers session yesterday but i missed it. And I decided to take out time today to digest everything about http://Stellar.org|Stellar.org
<stellar-slack>
<eva> Oh cool! Okay, good to know - I’m tagging @scott here so he can possibly incorporate some feedback into the next one :) It’s always a hard balance to explain the open platform nature of Stellar, but still give examples of what it can be used for.
<stellar-slack>
<eva> Really happy to hear that you attended the talk, and that it got you interested in checking out more about stellar-public.slack.
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> If I eventual have any contribution towards the betterment of the landing page to keywords usage, i will definitely through it in as a suggestion, but for now, i think is cool.
<stellar-slack>
<eva> @vogue20033: thank you so much. We really appreciate any help we can get on explaining Stellar in a way that makes sense!
<stellar-slack>
<eva> Seems like folks in Nigeria are getting it *very* quickly though, which is awesome
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> yes...lol:grinning:
<stellar-slack>
<eva> We’re learning that Nigeria moves VERY quickly
<stellar-slack>
<eva> Not news to you though, I’m sure :P
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> @eva yeah that's correct! especially such as time as this.
<stellar-slack>
<eva> Yeah, when there’s a big opportunity for innovation or change… so cool.
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> Exactly! You nail it:+1:
<stellar-slack>
<vogue20033> Nigerians get the energy and if well managed it's going to be awesome, especially when you guys (people coming with innovation) have a sure Sustainability mind towards this project
<stellar-slack>
<alanmcsherrythesecond> @eva ty!
<stellar-slack>
<eva> @vogue20033: Oh, absolutely. That’s a huge consideration for us - an abandoned project can be worse than no project at all, esp. when people’s finances are involved. It’s so important that there’s follow-through.
<stellar-slack>
<eva> @alanmcsherry: sure thing :) Let us know if you have any questions - @graydon would probably be the best person to ask.

<vitty> hi!
<stellar-slack>
<vitty> when, how i can sign up for a stellar address?
<stellar-slack>
<jed> You don't have to sign up you can just make one.
<stellar-slack>
<jed> But you probably want to use a wallet
<stellar-slack>
<jed> Check out either centaurus on android or http://lobstr.co|lobstr.co

<dzham> @eva: I think it's just that a lot of developers just see marketing and sales as dishonest. Writing software for its own sake is the highest virtue. Build a better mouse trap, et cetera.
<stellar-slack>
<dzham> Even in a commercial setting you have developers who don't understand sales cycles, and that you need to start selling the software before it's finished. Or that you need to prioritize features bases on their value to customers.
<stellar-slack>
<eva> This is true. It’s a tension between priorities, I suppose. But I do think if marketers/sales people were empathetic and truthful in their approach, thing would get much better. I see marketing (when it’s good) as just communication. But much like communication in life, it has to be wanted on both ends in order to work. *Good* marketing is hard, can’t really be automated, and has to be for something you actu
