Well, managed to figure out what I'd been doing wrong on that spi flash issue. As expected it was a stupid software issue (actually a collection of them). All fixed and pushed to my github.

folded/spindled/mutilated it to run on my board, stripped out a lot of stuff so I could concentrate on learning more about the riscv assembly

it probably needs a readme, but basics is 1Mbaud uart and you need to press 'u' in the console to actually start usb code :p
