<drberko_> hi im a new user currently trying to figure out this FPGA thing. I was wondering how to install gp4par? I don't see any commands to install it on linux (Debian) so I am kinda lost. Thanks for your time

<bwang333> New to this type of stuff and was wondering how I am supposed to install this package as I don't see any exe files in the folder in the Github repository. Any help is much appreciated!
<tnt> bwang333: install ... what ?

<azonenberg> bwang333: gp4par?
<azonenberg> You'll need to build from source
<azonenberg> There is no official binary distribution
<azonenberg> It's only been tested on linux to my knowledge but i see no reason it wouldn't build on windows, worst case you can compile it under WSL
<bwang333> yes gp4apr
<azonenberg> Should be able to do a standard CMake compile
<bwang333> i'm sorry bare with me here what do you mean by build from the source
<Hoernchen> uh oh
<azonenberg> You should probably ask in #cmake or something if you've never had to compile anything yourself, it might take a while to get set up
<azonenberg> I will warn you in advance though, gp4par is still a bit experimental and if you're not an experienced software developer you might find it a little tricky to get started
<azonenberg> You'll also have to compile Yosys yourself probably, since gp4par is only the place-and-route and doesn't include a synthesis tool\
<bwang333> ok thanks for the pointers
<daveshah> You can get prebuilt Yosys here: https://github.com/FPGAwars/toolchain-icestorm/releases
<daveshah> Doesn't help with gp4par though

<Xark> emeb: Very nice! Same Ohio Scientific character set, I see too. I am guessing a 6502 and BASIC may be next? :)
<emeb> having fun tweaking the video text output driver to handle more char/line, plus adding a much-needed backspace functionality.
<Xark> Yes, no backspace was lame on OSI (and no excuse like Apple I). :)

<Xark> emeb: Looks really sweet. I am pencilling in implementing your project on an IceBreaker ULP5K board to play with... (I already have composite version bookmarked).
<emeb> Xark: I'll be putting the VGA version up on github shortly.
<Xark> emeb: Awesome. Fun stuff!
<emeb> My VGA output ckt has 2 bits/color on the RGB - not sure what conventional PMODs that Icebreaker could use provide tho.
<emeb> but that's easy to tweak.
<Xark> Yes, no problem. I think dual PMOD one I have is 3/3/2 (but not positive - I have a few).
<emeb> Nice. IIRC there's a pretty simple PS/2 PMOD out there which should work with this too.
<Xark> Yes. I have pretty much all PMODs I have seen available.
<Xark> The one I was thinking of is 6 bit VGA with one PMOD, or 10 bit with two (and 4/4/4 with "Papilio wing"/breadboard). https://www.tindie.com/products/xesscorp/stickit-vga/
<emeb> Yeah - that one would work just fine if you populate just the first PMOD header.
<Xark> 6 bit VGA + PS/2 KB (and maybe a digital joystick or something) sounds perfect. :D
<emeb> I've got 2-channel audio vi Sigma/Delta too - just needs a simple RC LPF to recover.
<emeb> sample rate is > 2MHz so it doesn't need critical filtering.
<Xark> Okay then, hello "game console". :D
<emeb> Yep.
<Xark> Cool. I was looking at your audio circuit earlier.
<emeb> I'll probably work on that some in the future to add envelopes.
<Xark> Right now it is just two 8-bit channels?
<Xark> (DMA or something)?
<emeb> 2 16-bit channels output driven by 4 independent oscillators
<emeb> variable amplitude, frequency and waveshape.
<Xark> Ahh, I see. More old-school, sounds good.
<Xark> Hello "chiptues". :D
<Xark> chiptunes*
<emeb> It's pretty primitive - thinking about swapping in one of the FM synth engines I've got laying around.
<emeb> I sized it and it should fit into the remaining resources.
<Xark> Nice.
<emeb> Alternatively, use that last SPRAM as a big wavetable, but that requires more support horsepower than the 6502 likely can provide.
