Sprite_tm: What FPGA do you plan to use? what volume to do plan?
<Sprite_tm>
edmund_: For the badge you mean? Can I ask why you want to know?

Sprite_tm: I figured out you try to design a ECP5 based FPGA badge for Superconf. I might be able to help you with purchasing ECP5 for a good price. for this I need to know the volume of badges you want to produce and the exact component number.
<Sprite_tm>
edmund_: I think the amount is about 500. The plan was to use a LFE5U-45F-8BG381C .
<Sprite_tm>
Also thanks :) sorry for being a bit suspicious, but someone just popping up on irc and asking extremely direct questions make me go 'hmm'.

Sprite_tm: Yes. I do not hang out that much on IRC. I am @ico_TC on twitter. I co-founded symbioticeda.com with Clifford Wolf. SymbioticEDA is funding the work of daveshah on ECP5.
<Sprite_tm>
Ah cool! Nice to meet you, I guess I owe half my current experience in FPGAs to you guys :)
<edmund_>
Sprite_TM: I find it awesome that you are doing a badge and I want to support you. Its our mission to support people like you.
<Sprite_tm>
Thanks! i find it awesome that there are open-source tools for this stuff, and I think lots of others would also find it really cool to be able to create their own hardware. Especially with the riscv-hype going on, I decided to poke the Hackaday people to offer them to create a badge with an FPGA with an open-source toolchain on it, and... well, here we are.
<edmund_>
Spirte_tm: Projects like Glasgow or iceBreaker or Alhambra or tinyFPGA Bx or Ex are awesome to grow the interest in FPGAs. Micko did a small run of an ice40 badge last year for Hackerconf Belgrade.
<edmund_>
I guess as you are in Asia you will do the manufacturing run of the badgte in Asia. At what company do you plan to buy your FPGA components? (important for price request)
<Sprite_tm>
Yes, I'm in Shanghai. Not sure if we're going to do the assembly here; I'm not against it but with mr. Trump doing weird stuff with import taxes, it may be more feasible to assemble everything there.
<Sprite_tm>
Also not sure where we're going to get parts... they seem to be available quite cheap (RMB65) on Taobao and 500 is not that large a batch, but as it's Taobao they may as well have been desoldered from scrapped PCBs ;)
<Sprite_tm>
I'm talking to a guy whom I've got a reference from here that can probably squirrel out a few good sources; I can tell you more at the end of the week probably.
<edmund_>
500 boards is a small run. Do you have experience with any partners to do that in the USA?
<Sprite_tm>
But perhaps we're better off taking this to mail? If you're willing to sponsor (bits of) the badge, Hackaday may also be able to give you something in return... not sure about their contracts with existing sponsors, but I certainly would see you getting a shoutout of some kind.
<Sprite_tm>
No, I do not. For that, I'd refer to the Hackaday people tbh.
<Sprite_tm>
I mean, this is not the first Supercon and not their first badge :)
<edmund_>
:-) send me an email at edmund at symbioticeda com
<edmund_>
I am highly interested in sponsoring the badge.
<Sprite_tm>
Check. I'll also CC in Mike Szczys, the main Hackaday editor; aside from being a cool guy he's also responsible for the badge on HAD's side.
<edmund_>
We negotiated with Mike two years ago about a FPGA badge for all visitors of Belgrade. But in the end it did not happen.
