each impl has different usecases

the go version is much more performant, but doesnt work in the browser

the js version can be embedded into a webpage

mumbles something how great it will be when packages are identified by their CAS address making hacked code modules so much harder.

fiatjaf_: probably npm interoperability to get adoption
<kpcyrd>
on 2nd thought, you would only do this for packages that have package-lock.json anyway, so you don't have to cary about libraries you push to npm
<kpcyrd>
maybe look at yarn on how to write an npm replacement in general, then have a command that translates from npm to gx, then have a command that fetches from ipfs and calls the commands to setup the dependencies
<kpcyrd>
"setup the deps" would be either untar or untar and execute gyp

<kpcyrd>
fiatjaf: I'm not sure I get your question. You would need to get the steps I mentioned above executed. Unless gx implements them for you, you have to implement them yourself. gx is mostly about getting the bytes to your computer.
<kpcyrd>
an npm package may contain C, so it's not a simple "untar to folder"

fiatjaf: saw you asked for a update about everythingstays.com somewhere (HN I think), update is that https://github.com/victorbjelkholm/gx-js got written as a replacement for it, since gx is already written now, just needed to provide js hooks for gx
<victorbjelkholm>
fiatjaf: documentation improvements are always welcome :)
<fiatjaf>
about gx-js, why can't we keep all the packages in a global directory?
<fiatjaf>
from which any different project using it would be able to require
<victorbjelkholm>
fiatjaf: yup, would be sweet, fetched into global directory and symlinked into node_modules
<victorbjelkholm>
would be simple to implement
<fiatjaf>
or, since all packages are on the local ipfs store anyway, why not just keep them there and symlink to /ipfs/<package hash>?
<victorbjelkholm>
symlink from the fuse mount? Don't think fuse is reliable or widely used enough
<fiatjaf>
I really could use some disk space savings
<fiatjaf>
yes
<victorbjelkholm>
would be sweet to have a `require`-like function hooked up to ipfs directly
<victorbjelkholm>
but would require a async function and change the structure, so not very nice
<fiatjaf>
well, there's amd
<victorbjelkholm>
think most of the world have moved on from amd, seems most code nowadays is using either commonjs or es6 modules

if it would be simpler and better, why didn't you do it on gx-js?

question on ipfs-cluster. if you set the replication factor to less than all, can you store _more_ in the cluster than any individual node can store?
<jnagro>
like, can you band together a bunch of smaller cluster nodes to create a larger shared disk sorta thing
<letmutx>
i am trying to understand how a node connects to peers. after opening the socket, first it starts with multistream-select, negotiates a protocol(secio in this case) and then it is supposed to use ipfs protocol. what is the format of ipfs protocol messages?
<letmutx>
or is a format negotiated again using some sort of multistream-select?

like http messages.

with a --pin=false, it works immediately.
<lgierth>
this looks like some lock never got released
<lgierth>
then restart, and try again. it'll likely work then. if it doesn't then there's some deaper issue

is there an easy way to start the daemon in "offline" mode, no connecting to other nodes? I only want to 'ipfs mount' my local data
vsimon has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<voker57>
MaybeDragon: ipfs daemon --offline
<JCaesar>
Oh, that's definitely better than ipfs bootstram rm all…
<JCaesar>
lgierth: …
<JCaesar>
I restarted the vm.
<JCaesar>
That did it.
<JCaesar>
Restarting the docker container with ipfs in it did not…

lgierth: out of curiosity: can you execute ipfs files cp /ipfs/QmZ7KWNrtbzs6Jg7zqjwF9wYrWbegzDH2PeRLeEjDX63ry … or ipfs ls /ipfs/QmZ7KWNrtbzs6Jg7zqjwF9wYrWbegzDH2PeRLeEjDX63ry or similar?
<JCaesar>
(because I can't, on my second node.)

try `ipfs ls --resolve-type=false`
<JCaesar>
That does indeed work. I guess it's just a case of ridiculously slow network.

what are the drawbacks of mounting /ipfs?
Ecran has quit [Quit: Going offline, see ya! (www.adiirc.com)]

Fuse doesn't deal with timeouts happily, so you may get stuck processes. Also, if you mount /ipns, you cant(?) do ipfs name publish anymore.
<tidux[m]>
Speaking of mounting /ipfs, anyone ever got it working as 9p instead of FUSE?
