greetings, i have a crazy question after recently discovering ipfs, but i'm wondering if i'm on the right track... could it be possible to build a browser that parses ipfs hashes in such a way where a webpage is coded solely in hashes of ipfs files and maybe even functions/code?
<myman>
... where basically a language of verbs creates relations between ipfs files?
<myman>
ipfs files, i.e. 'nouns'

myman: Yes, there was an attempt at a language hosted on top of IPFS, look up Morte and Annah by Gabriel439
<Mateon1>
It's a low level lambda-calculus based language

if i understood correctly, if i upload large file through my node, the local copy will have to be created first, right?
<bomb-on>
if so, what happens with that file once i disconnect from ipfs, delete it from my local node and even from my disk? where is it stored afterwards?
<sknebel>
bomb-on: if nobody else downloaded and pinned it in the meantime, it is gone until you or somebody else with the same file hosts it again
<Nicolab>
bomb-on: I if I'm not mistaken, The file is stored on other nodes if they downloaded, otherwise the file is not accessible if the unique source is deconnected
<bomb-on>
ah, alright, thanks for the answers!
<bomb-on>
so, in order to completely "upload" a large file to ipfs, i should wait until it upload and wait until at least 1 other node downloads it, right? :)
<bomb-on>
is there a way to verify that the file is stored to some other node?
muvlon has joined #ipfs
<bomb-on>
also, if i run a node on my computer, let's say my laptop with 100GB free disk space, and someone uploads a 90GB file, is there a way to prevent my node to accept that one? or does node have some thresholds set up to prevent excess disk usage? how does this work?
<yocku>
I am new in the IPFS network. Does it function? I published a file using "ipfs add file" and try to get it using "ipfs cat hash" at another computer. They are both connected to the IPFS network. After 30 minutes.. nothing happens? Wha do I wrong?
<Nicolab>
ipfs files stat <path> - Display file status.
cris has quit []
<JCaesar>
bomb-on: That's not how IPFS works.
<bomb-on>
JCaesar hm, no?
<r0kk3rz>
bomb-on: unless you deliberately pin that file, you'll only keep files as big as your cache size
<bomb-on>
ah, alright, i see
<r0kk3rz>
but in general nothing happens automatically, you have to request the file in the first place
MDude has quit [Quit: Going offline, see ya! (www.adiirc.com)]
<bomb-on>
how do you mean? the file won't be "pinned" unless someone requests it?
<r0kk3rz>
'pinned' means pinned to your node, not anyone elses
<r0kk3rz>
if they want to pin it, they need to tell their node to do that
<bomb-on>
aham, ok
Neomex has joined #ipfs
<bomb-on>
so, this means that somewhere out there, there is at least one node which is pinning some file automatically?
<r0kk3rz>
no? why would it mean that?
<Kythyria[m]>
Probably the one which the add command was issued on, but there's no guarantee it's still around (or currently around)
<r0kk3rz>
i wouldnt consider that automatically :)
<bomb-on>
r0kk3rz ah, i was confused with where are all my files which i uploaded pinned... but yeah, i see now, they are in my node for the starters ^^
mauz555 has joined #ipfs
<bomb-on>
ok, thanks for clarifications, i might ask few more stupid questions now and then :)
<r0kk3rz>
its a common misconception with IPFS for some reason
<bomb-on>
and whoever is in the IPFS dev team... amazing job fellas, keep up the good work!!
<bomb-on>
r0kk3rz eh, well, that's understandable, given that we are all used to how interwebz work nowadays
<bomb-on>
but still, much simpler than it seems on the first...

indeed in the current system, everything is just stored 'out there in the cloud'

which will probably happen with ipfs too
