<ethanhs> Hi _florent_, sorry to bother you, but would you have any suggestions for parts for adding ethernet to the Acorn? I think that is probably the cheapest solution for my problem. My Google skills seem to be failing though, all I can find are SerDes chips I'd have to solder directly to, which I'd rather not :) Oh and some ethernet PHYs but it seems without SerDes I can only do 10Mbit/s directly from the FPGA...
<zyp> the 20-pin socket has 12 IO which should be enough to hook up a RMII PHY if 100 Mb/s is enough
<zyp> otherwise if you need gigabit, the easiest way is probably to make a board with an m.2 socket and a sfp socket
<ethanhs> zyp: ah interesting, thank you for the information, do you have a link to information on how I'd set up 100Mb/s connection with such a PHY? And/or a suggestion of how to get one
<ethanhs> sorry not how to get one but which to get, most seem to be available only at volume
<ethanhs> 100Mb/s is plenty for my needs, just need to stream some video
<zyp> something like this, perhaps: https://www.waveshare.com/lan8720-eth-board.htm
<tpb> Title: LAN8720 ETH Board Ethernet module, 10/100 Ethernet Transceiver LAN8720 onboard (at www.waveshare.com)
<zyp> but I believe you'd have to remove the oscillator so you could feed it ref_clk from the fpga, IIRC the acorn doesn't have any clock inputs available
<zyp> and I'm not sure how much luck you'd have running RMII over jumper wires either :)
<ethanhs> ah I see, thank you for the link. Unfortunately it seems if you want cheap, ethernet, pcie on an FPGA you can only pick 2 (or you have to hack something together)
<ethanhs> well, maybe I will give this a try and see how it works out
