<Forty-Bot>
does the --freq option for nextpnr actually do anything?
<ZirconiumX>
It sets the target frequency of nextpnr
<Forty-Bot>
yeah, but that change the behavior at all
<ZirconiumX>
Yes
<daveshah>
For designs with one clock domain, it doesn't change optimisation significantly
<Forty-Bot>
ah, ok
<daveshah>
There's no timing driven rip up or anything
<daveshah>
For multiple clock designs, timing constraints will affect relative tradeoff between domains to some extent
<Forty-Bot>
from experimenting, I found that a design which sometimes synthesizes above target and sometimes below it seems to meet/fail-to-meet at the same ratio even with --freq
<Forty-Bot>
which is rather surprising
<daveshah>
That's probably mostly just the pseudorandom nature
<Forty-Bot>
yeah; I was expecting nextpnr to "try harder" to meet timing or something
<daveshah>
Changing seed will have similar effect probably
<daveshah>
No there's nothing like that yet
