<DonkeyHotei>
so the whole gpu is nothing but a glorified framebuffer?
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: no
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: there's different modules, each doing something
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: there's G2D to accelerate 2D ops
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: Mali to accelerate 3D
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: the display engine that handles framebuffers and outputs to HDMI, VGA, etc

<Turl>
so lima talks with mali and accelerates your GLES ops
<Turl>
you still need something to handle the framebuffer, and that's where fbturbo comes in
<Turl>
fbturbo is like xserver-xorg-video-intel, lima is like the intel part of Mesa
<DonkeyHotei>
sounds like a mess
<geecko>
Turl, i thought xserver-xorg-video-intel was handling 2d acceleration?
<Turl>
geecko: dunno really, but fbturbo also handles 2d accel (via G2D)
<geecko>
i'd like to see lima running on Android some day.
<DonkeyHotei>
my significant other is tired of lugging around a 14" laptop and i've been looking at aliexpress for allwinner-based tablets that can maybe run ubuntu
<geecko>
it would be a giant step further for the #replicant project
<DonkeyHotei>
i still have the mele A10 settop i never got around to really playing with
<geecko>
will receive an A10s board in a few days :D
<DonkeyHotei>
looking at aliexpress, i was unaware the A31 was a no-go
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: you can ask earl for a zatab :P
<DonkeyHotei>
aliexpress has better specs atm
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: well, the og one wasn't that bad
<Turl>
1G ram and decent display
<DonkeyHotei>
og?
<Turl>
original
<DonkeyHotei>
i see 2G ram 16G nand models on ali
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: sunxi ones with 2G?
<DonkeyHotei>
yep
<Turl>
they may not be sunxi :p
<Turl>
many products there are mislabeled
<DonkeyHotei>
i see them on ebay too

they all seem to be A31, though
<DonkeyHotei>
there are however some A20's with 1G ram 16G nand
<DonkeyHotei>
the A31 units seem to have much better batteries, though
<DonkeyHotei>
many claim to have a dual core A13 with 1G ram
<DonkeyHotei>
oh crap, i just looked at Za's site and the current tab is A31

<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: dual core A13 may be A23
<DonkeyHotei>
does the A23 support 1G ram? i know the A13 doesn't
<Turl>
dunno
<Turl>
I think most of them come with 512 though
linkmauve1 has left #linux-sunxi [#linux-sunxi]
<DonkeyHotei>
Turl: and there's no hope for the A31 at all?
<Turl>
DonkeyHotei: nobody has cared much for it so far
<Turl>
and I don't think many here have A31 hw
<Turl>
you can probably count them with one hand, if at all

[Wed 2014-01-29 06:12:52 PM PST] <DonkeyHotei> Turl: and there's no hope for the A31 at all?
<jinzo>
So what stands out is the max resolution and probably ram amount too (somewhere along the A10 vs A10s differences)
<DonkeyHotei>
there's an A10s?
<jinzo>
yes
<jinzo>
more info about that one on the wiki
<jinzo>
if I'm not mistaken (I'm not up to speed on sunxi nowadays) the s version is a bit cut down (and cheaper)
<jinzo>
ofcourse you're welcome to fill in the stuff on the wiki ;)

Hmm, Trying to figure out a few issues with my current roofs nand install. gotta figure out a way to debug mplayer. it loads and plays all the video's i've tossed at it but seems to only play them once, then it locks up the mplayer gui. I get no frame dropping even when fullscreen so im assuming the drivers are not the issue. gonna try another video player to be sure. gonna be a long night.
<Turl>
benefit would be hw acceleration when decoding video :p
<brain_>
think I seen a reference to that someplace lol, ill look it over, thanks
<brain_>
you know what I don't understand is how is debian able to function better than the android install that was previously installed...I mean WAY less lag, less frameskip, lots of free ram still. just an overall better experience with debian. 32 seconds from cold boot to fully usuable. I mean its still just an A10 not exactly cutting edge.
<brain_>
the 3.4 kernel and nand installation I believe helped alot, at least it gave me some power management
<Seppoz>
Turl: i found the problem with uart 6+7, some jumper resistors wernt set.. thanks for the tip about checking if the pins can be used as gpio, that got me on track
<libv>
Seppoz: can you document that on the device page?
<Seppoz>
document what exactly?
<libv>
Seppoz: how you got these uart pins to work on this particular board or tablet
<Seppoz>
its custom so it wont help anyone
<libv>
ok
<Turl>
Seppoz: :)
<Seppoz>
it might be usefull to know that uart 6+7 works on PI pins without a problem
<Turl>
brain_: is nand any faster than sd?
<libv>
Turl: marginally, at least on A13
<brain_>
by a longshot for me, and that is an understatement..but also I was using class 4 sd cards so of course that played a huge part. i have 8gb internal which is plenty so im strictly using mmc slot to boot the recovery sd when issues come up.
<Turl>
brain_: I may try nand then before getting a decent card
<Turl>
got 16GB iirc
<libv>
Turl: the decent card usually doesn't help much
<Turl>
libv: not better than an el cheapo class 4 one?
<libv>
Turl: it's usually limited to about 10mBps anyway, i think something to do with the number of pins being driven
<brain_>
I would for sure. once I got my head around nand booting I see no reason to go back to sd installs, too many headaches with the spl and it would fail to boot alot.
<libv>
Turl: class-10 usually is what you can expect
<libv>
nothing beats sata really, but even i am not doing that
<Turl>
libv: yeah, not like I can add a disk to a tablet
<Turl>
:p
<brain_>
well i have no options for sata since its a tablet,
<libv>
:)
<Turl>
libv: maybe usb tho
<libv>
brain_: a hammer and ducttape!
<brain_>
well you could..^^
<libv>
usb is pretty ok, i get about 20mBps on my odroid with that
<Turl>
you could solder a fast pendrive inside
<Turl>
like the wifi chip is
<Turl>
(you probably would lose wifi tho)
geecko has joined #linux-sunxi

I am removing the internal wifi module which is on the usb host port, and replacing that with a very stripped usb hub so in theory i could do ssd if I had room. kinda tough to fit my bluetooth, wifi stick and then a ssd drive lol

<libv>
hurray, xf86-video is up
<Turl>
brain_: any tips wrt nand filesystems?
<brain_>
one thing i am not sure of about that mod is will the current driver still handle the power management of the wifi
<libv>
that was easy :)
<Turl>
libv: on kms? :)
<libv>
yeah
<Turl>
cool
<libv>
i was only running my own kms testing utils so far
<Turl>
libv: are you working on mainline or 3.4 btw?
<libv>
stuff i wrote back in 2012...
<libv>
plane testing only got added by Ville (who else would do a thorough job at intel?) 2 weeks ago
<libv>
Turl: sunxi-3.4 first, then mainlining afterwards
<brain_>
Turl: All I did was repartition my nand, keeping nanda and nandb...the rest i partitioned off and and formatted as ext4, pointed root= there and that was it. have not tried any other fs types
<Turl>
brain_: no journal tweaks or anything then
<libv>
hrm, i need to go fix the cursor though :(
<brain_>
nothing at all just yet. if I notice any issues I will probably look into some other tweaks. I did need to add rootwait but i dont consider that a problem
<libv>
kms infrastructure gives no information about what cursor types the hw supports, so i am not surprised that the cursor just vanished on me, while it worked before
<brain_>
if my nand does die out I can replace it here with the tools I have. will be looking for a 16gb chip from an iphone if I can get a datasheet.
