<daviddias> Morning world
<daviddias> keyboardcat: that is possible
<daviddias> in a couple of ways. You can either: use js-ipfs CLI with WebRTC (see how to here https://github.com/ipfs/js-ipfs#is-there-webrtc-support-for-js-ipfs-with-nodejs) or you can make a call to the gateway nodes to prefetch your content from your local node, so that the browser can find it
<daviddias> keyboardcat: we intend to remove this hurdle and are actively working on it with the DHT and Relay endeavours - https://github.com/ipfs/js-ipfs#project-status

<daviddias> yeah!

<daviddias> this is excellent news
<Stskeeps> developer versions, or general in-hands-of-users versions?
<daviddias> now you can have a full P2P app on Android (with Chrome) and iOS (with Safari) fully interop
<daviddias> Stskeeps: no dev versions, all stable/released/default versions

moe_ has joined #ipfs
<moe_> Hey guys i'm new to IPFS i would like to know the difference between recursive , direct and indirect pinned files
<pjz> moe_: indirect is a pin caused by pinning something else either recursively or directly
<pjz> moe_: recursive is a pin of usually a direcotry that cuases a bunch of files to be pinned
<pjz> moe_: direct is a pin of a particular file
<pjz> moe_: note that a single file can require multiple pins due to block chunking
<pjz> so I'm building a pastebin for IPFS - is pastebits or pastepin a better name?
<r0kk3rz> daviddias: very cool indeed, the snapshot wrapper is a little fat but otherwise this will be quite useful i think
Encrypt has joined #ipfs
<moe_> @pjz but why would my added file be recursive even if it was a small Buffer
<daviddias> moe_: that is because that small file might be chunked into multiple nodes
<daviddias> Pin is a Graph API
<daviddias> it thinks over Graphs, not files
<daviddias> a file can be one or many nodes, depending on its size

<moe_> So in theory there is no way to force a direct pin?
ejsf has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<moe_> Like for example, would it be a safe assumption to treat recursive files as stable files in the server
<moe_> and they would remain there
<voker57> direct pin is a pin of certain _chunk_ iirc
<voker57> not sure what do you mean by forcing a pin
<voker57> if you pin some file/directory recursively, they will remain in the server after GC invocation
<voker57> if you pin directly some hash, only one chunk is protected
<Icefoz_> pjz: pastepin :D
jkilpatr has joined #ipfs
<pjz> Icefoz_: hm. I was liking pastebits a bit better, honestly. pinbits and pastebits ?
<pjz> Icefoz_: pastebits and pinbits

<Icefoz_> pjz: pastebits is fine, really.

<whyrusleeping> musicmatze[m]: I'm not going to make it to CCC this year (skipped family time the past couple years to make it) but maybe some others on the team will
<whyrusleeping> vith: oh interesting, thats definitely a bug
<musicmatze> whyrusleeping: Ah, sad, but understandable. I really hope to see some of you guys to talk about scuttlebutt and the ideas I have :-)
olizilla has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<whyrusleeping> pjz: pastebits is nice, i also like pastepin, but people might mishear it (it sounds just like pastebin when you say it out loud)
<whyrusleeping> musicmatze: yeah! I actually was talking with dominic tarr today
<whyrusleeping> we got interrupted before we could finish the conversation, but i think we're on the same page
<musicmatze> ah, that's the creator of scuttlebutt?
<whyrusleeping> yeah
<musicmatze> nice!
<whyrusleeping> he showed up at this conference i'm at now and gave a talk
<musicmatze> wow, that's awesome!
<musicmatze> so what did you talk about? Porting scuttlebutt to IPFS? :-)
<whyrusleeping> I was asking him about the data formats
maxlath1 has joined #ipfs
<whyrusleeping> we need to get ipld selectors implemented before we can be performant for the model of their data though
<musicmatze> yep, that's one key-point.
<whyrusleeping> since its a very long linked list essentially
maxlath has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<whyrusleeping> but we need that for like 20 other things already, so its getting bumped up in priority significantly
maxlath1 is now known as maxlath
<musicmatze> Another thing that would be really nice (not only in regards of ipfs+scuttlebutt, but in general) would be IPNS name caching and convenient private key export/import.
<musicmatze> because the last time I checked, IPNS names where not cached ... like "oh, that node is offline...so I cannot resolve this IPNS hash anymore"...
<musicmatze> and private key import/export would (as far as I can see) be necessary for multi-device scuttlebut profile usage...
<whyrusleeping> musicmatze: if you want those to move forward, you could file issues on go-ipfs for each of them
<whyrusleeping> and describe your usecases
<musicmatze> :-) That's right
<whyrusleeping> once things are well defined I can schedule things to get worked on (priority depends on how frequently people in the community complain about things)
<musicmatze> You think I can post the IPNS caching thing in the ipfs repository, too?
