<mithro>
With the work Florent is doing around USB3 on ECP5, we could potentially do a similar device without needing the cypress part too...
<TD-Linux>
yeah. with the cypress part it looks a lot closer to existing hdmi2usb hw but probably just as much work porting to that as using the fpga directly
<mithro>
If it is sub-$100 it'll most certainly be on my to-do list

<azonenberg>
TD-Linux: there's 3 different architectural properties of PLDs actually
<azonenberg>
PLA vs LUT, crossbar vs 2D matrix, and nvram vs sram
<azonenberg>
there's much debate as to what constitutes a cpld vs fpga
<azonenberg>
altera parts call anything with nvram a cpld
<azonenberg>
personally i think pla vs lut makes much more sense
<Flea86>
azonenberg: Indeed.
<anticw>
are the hdmi signals going directly into the ECP5? or is there a chip on the underside?
<Flea86>
anticw: On the ULX3s, they connect to the ECP5 via AC coupling alone.
<Flea86>
not exactly hdmi compliant, ofc (it won't drive a 20 meter cable), but it seems to work :)
<anticw>
right, i was gonna suggest if the cable is short it's probably fine
<Flea86>
anticw: I assume you were talking about ULX3s? :)
<anticw>
ac coupling to hdmi ... i googled and see a tweet from daveshah showing hdmi output
<Flea86>
You can also use TFP410 (not sure of correct p/n)
<anticw>
yeah, i looked at that as a way to maybe get hdmi from ice40 as a toy
<Flea86>
anticw: Have a peek at ULX3s schematics
<anticw>
iirc the pkg was large enough i wasn't excited about it
<Flea86>
anticw: Dunno about ice40 hdmi, I suppose it is possible though.. in fact I know of at least one ice40 board with hdmi (I forget the name, but it is an open design)
<anticw>
Flea86: i think i signed up to get notifications on crowdsupply in the hope i could order a board
<anticw>
Flea86: the attractiveness of the idea was that ice40 is 'easy' with the current icestorm/etc tools, and hdmi is better than blinky for playing with things
<Flea86>
anticw: Can't imagine the open workflow being any harder for ECP5
<anticw>
Flea86: i have limited experience, i have working ice40 stuffs, so that's easier for me to focus on
<Flea86>
Well that is fair enough. Use what you know :)
<anticw>
Flea86: ice40 i can order cheap with qfn and hand-solder
<Flea86>
Yeah true
<TD-Linux>
icebreaker is the one with hdmi
<TD-Linux>
looks like it can do 720p
<Flea86>
Ah right. Thanks.
<Flea86>
Really? Cool.

<SpaceCoaster>
Seeed just delivered a tang nano and a tang primer. Which is the best to start with. Looking to be able to do something useful for the reverse engineering efforts.
<pepijndevos>
SpaceCoaster, Gowin stuff is going to be released soonish, currently working on making GW1N-1 work at all
<pepijndevos>
tang primer is what FPGA?
<pepijndevos>
ping omnitechnomancer (if that's the same as OmniMancer)
<SpaceCoaster>
Tang primer is the Anlogic EG4S20. Pretty sure it is the one used by OmniMancer.
<SpaceCoaster>
pepijndevos: what do you recommend as a gw1n-1 dev environment?
* ZirconiumX
quietly works on Intel/Altera stuff in the background

<tpw_rules>
what is the story, if any, on open source artix-7?
<daveshah>
There are two proof-of-concept level flows right now, VPR and nextpnr. Hopefully at least the VPR one will be end-user-ready by next year ish
<daveshah>
afaik there is now bitstream documentation for most Artix-7 features, except some DSP modes, some IO features and the transceivers
<tpw_rules>
what would the problems be if i were to use either of them right now?
<daveshah>
The main issue with the nextpnr flow is the slow routing and the timing results it gives being totally meaningless
<daveshah>
I'm less sure of the detailed status of the VPR flow
<tpw_rules>
alright

ok, i was just poking over pepijndevos github forks to see where that tool might be but don't see it
<anticw>
to be fair i don't have hw so i'm mostly looking to see what there is, i should probably order some of the cheap tang boards then worry
<pepijndevos[m]>
SpaceCoaster i hope tang nano will work on release, fingers crossed. I've been using a trenz micro board with a gw1nr-9
<pepijndevos[m]>
anticw yes there is bitstream generation, but it's not public yet. I hope to get things a bit more usable...
<pepijndevos[m]>
Tang nano is cool to get into it, but doesn't have a lot of resources
