<Tenkawa> greetings
<lanefu> have you melted your board yet
<Tenkawa> nope
<Tenkawa> :)
<Tenkawa> i am trying to figure out though... is there a programmatic way already written to transfer back from external root to micosd or am I going to have to get creative?
<Tenkawa> it was a neat experiment but not getting "that" much perf gain to use up all of my m.2 drive
<Tenkawa> so I was just going to use a microsd
<lanefu> currently bootloader on microsd that then pivots to root on usb?
<Tenkawa> yep
<Tenkawa> no
<Tenkawa> bootloader on internal emmc (nano pi)
<Tenkawa> no microsd in unit at all currently
<lanefu> hmm well probalby no scripted path for that
<lanefu> the nand-sata-install.sh script is meant to work in the other direction
<lanefu> but some fiddling iwth /boot/boot.cmd|boot.scr and fstab should get you there
<Tenkawa> ok I cando that
<Tenkawa> going to use the internal for boot and swap
<lanefu> bleh
<lanefu> use the zram-cfg stuff for swap and avoid disk swap all together
<Tenkawa> nowhere near enough ram in t his thing
<Tenkawa> kyber and low swappiness should mitigate that anyway
<lanefu> well i suppose if you can weight it vs the zram

<lanefu> which board are you using again?
<Tenkawa> nano pi neo plus 2
<Tenkawa> ok here goes..rebuilding bootload sequence and rebooting
<lanefu> good luck
<Tenkawa> awww
<Tenkawa> ok lets see if i messed that up

<abananabread> hey guys..
<abananabread> i'm getting really confused...
<abananabread> there are so many different SBCs.. and OS..
<abananabread> and then the softwares...
<abananabread> sorry..
<abananabread> i want to know if i install Armbian on the Nanopi m4v2. Will I be able to install OpenMediaVault on top of that to manage my NAS?
<abananabread> I also want to install many things, like Docker for other applications.. but i'm not sure if that will work out..

<sbbg> Dear Armbian gurus, I just check content of /boot in a complete Armbian image. There are multiple common variable between armbianEnv.txt and boot.cmd. Can I insert new value to override those value in boot.cmd?
<sbbg> for example, may I assign value of ${fdtfile} in boot.cmd?

<IgorPec> yes you can add fdtfile=test.dtb

<sbbg> Hi, IgorPec, so I just add a new like like fdtfile=test.dtb into /boot/armbianEnv.txt, it will be reference in /boot/boot.cmd, right?
<IgorPec> yes
<IgorPec> note that some boot loader might have this variable set differently, like fdt_file
<IgorPec> i know its not always fdtfile
<IgorPec> in case you want to manipulated kernel boot paramaters, use extraargs=
<sbbg> Thank you, IgorPec. I just want to try out new dtb for my pineh64 model b. I will keep your suggestion in mind.

<redentor> the filesystm /var/log is full
<Tenkawa> redentor: whats taking up the space?
<Tenkawa> do a ls -l
<Tenkawa> also du -smx *
<redentor> @Tenkawa, 48
<Tenkawa> you must have a ram /var
<Tenkawa> /var/log rather
<Tenkawa> if you cd /var/log
<Tenkawa> ls -lSr
<Tenkawa> what is the last file?
<redentor> Tenkawa, the directoy "lost+found'
<Tenkawa> thats a directory
<Tenkawa> I need to know the last one with numbers out beside it
<Tenkawa> they should get larger
<Tenkawa> as they go towards the bottom of the list
<redentor> i do df -h "/dev/zram0 49M 48M 0 100% /var/log"

<Tenkawa> yep its ram based
<Tenkawa> IgorPec: thats just a fairly small /var/log in general.. mine dont cycle over till they are usually 250 mb or so
<lanefu> Tenkawa: btw the n2 is awesome and fast
<Tenkawa> but yeah he should check his /etc/default/armbian-zram-config too
<Tenkawa> lanefu: oh dont say that... I'm already in danger of getting myself in trouble as it is lol
<Tenkawa> since apparentny I bought a nanopi-t4 back a few years ago and misplaced it :(
<redentor> ok
chewitt_ is now known as chewitt
<R0b0t1`> rather slurp it tbh
<redentor> still: /bin/echo: write error: No space left on device
<Tenkawa> ouch that sounds like root
<Tenkawa> df -m /
<lanefu> here's something less scientific
<lanefu> `df /var/log && systemctl stop armbian-ramlog && systemctl restart rsyslog && logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.conf && systemctl restart rsyslog && systemctl start armbian-ramlog && df /var/log`
<Tenkawa> haahaa that too
<Tenkawa> i already disabled them
<Tenkawa> personally
<lanefu> the defaults are fine for a desktop, but a bit tight if you have something chatty like docker
<lanefu> the worst when cleaning up logs is when an open file handle is keeping the blocks from beign released
<Tenkawa> I moved to a xfs root with the kyber scheduler too and wow what a difference
<lanefu> whats kyber
<Tenkawa> its one of the newer kernel schedulers
<lanefu> is it a patch, or a kernel config?
<Tenkawa> just config
<Tenkawa> its not enabled in a lot of the default setups
<Tenkawa> but its really nice on multicore setups
<Tenkawa> and with my headless mulitcore server
<Tenkawa> couple that with the io benefits of xfs
<lanefu> i often use btrfs root because it plays well with docker
<Tenkawa> I still have not messed with docker

<Tenkawa> I guess I am so use to vmware, virtualbox, lxc, qemu, kvm, i havent thought about it
<lanefu> i defintely use it a lot, but have mixed feelings
<lanefu> once something is super productionalized sometimes it feels easier to just go back to VMs
<lanefu> anyway drink this koolaid https://www.nomadproject.io/
<Tenkawa> let me go take a look
<Tenkawa> ahh its basicly cgroup integration
<Tenkawa> actual real world usage
<lanefu> yeah docker is a wrapper of cgroups, namespaces, and then some wrappers for managing storage adn network
<Tenkawa> ahh
<lanefu> there's also podman, which is a daemonless competitor
<Tenkawa> ewww
<Tenkawa> I hate cgroup
<lanefu> you hate their functionality, or having to confiigure them
<Tenkawa> cgroup feels like everything that couldve went wrong with chroot
<Tenkawa> the configuration
<lanefu> well probably a + for docker, podman etc
<Tenkawa> and there's too much that can go wrong on the "controller" side vs a virtual machine being much more standalone
<Tenkawa> granted an environment like esx isnt the same.. it is much more similar
<Tenkawa> but I dont have to deal with bare metal much anymore

<R0b0t1`> hmm, if I want to compile a kernel, how would I do that?
<R0b0t1`> I'm not finding my device (nanopi duo) anywhere in the main tree
<R0b0t1`> I also can't see a defconfig anywhere in the armbian repo
<sarnold> with the caveat that I know nothing about arm.. if you have a working distro kernel, you can use 'make localmodconfig' in the kernel sources to turn the working .config to something tuned for your machine

<R0b0t1`> lanefu: I look at https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/config/boards/nanopiduo.conf and see nanopi_duo_defconfig and sun8i which I look for in the kernel configs, but I see nothing close enough to seem obvious?
<Tenkawa> R0b0t1`: I might be able to help in a few when i get back.. I have a unit close to that one
<R0b0t1`> ok, thanks
<lanefu> R0b0t1`: this would be the kernel config it uses https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/config/kernel/linux-sunxi-current.config

<R0b0t1`> hmm dang
<R0b0t1`> understand if you guys don't want to support, but having issues applying the config in the armbian repo for my device to a kernel build
<R0b0t1`> last step before linking I think
<R0b0t1`> was hoping to just make the deb pkg and install it on my device's working /
<R0b0t1`> this is from an x86_64 Ubuntu host with arm-none-linux-gnueabihf installed
<R0b0t1`> I'll try on-device for now
<Tenkawa> just a sec let me take a look
<Tenkawa> oh thats just a kernel toggle I think
<Tenkawa> is dwc3 a module or hardcoded?
<R0b0t1`> well, I can't tell what dwc3 is
<R0b0t1`> it doesn't seem to be a module?
<R0b0t1`> wait
<R0b0t1`> ah xhci might be enabled
<Tenkawa> its set to yes on mine
<Tenkawa> so you need to make sure USB_DWC3_DUAL_ROLE is set
<Tenkawa> in your kernel config
<R0b0t1`> it is set to dual role
<R0b0t1`> will try again, maybe I snazzled something when I toggled it
<Tenkawa> this has the history
<Tenkawa> sounds like it was a known oops
<R0b0t1`> thanks, really appreciate it. would have accidentally gotten it to work 'cause I set it to hardlink but good to know why.
<Tenkawa> oh its working?
<R0b0t1`> mebe, we will see
<Tenkawa> or just at least now know whats up
<Tenkawa> heheheh
<Tenkawa> if you need to you could modeswitch it
<R0b0t1`> fffff no that didn't fix it
<R0b0t1`> hokay, you have to hardlink in the DesignWare driver and also the thing at the very end of the USB drivers page for mode switching
<R0b0t1`> I think
