<corecode_> hi
<corecode_> i'm trying to run armbian on an olimex lime-a64, but for some reason the i can't log in as root on the serial console; says login incorrect
<[TheBug]> is it prompting for password?
<[TheBug]> if so what password are you using?
<corecode_> i'm using root/1234
<[TheBug]> that should be correct...
<[TheBug]> then it should prompt you to change the password on login
<[TheBug]> does it not get that far?
<corecode_> no
<corecode_> and i think it is unhappy about my 4k screen
<corecode_> so hdmi doesn't work either
<corecode_> also i don't get kernel boot messages
<corecode_> is there a way to use the serial port as console and not use hdmi?
<corecode_> ah, my /etc/shadow is damaged? there is only one entry
macc24 has joined #armbian
<[TheBug]> hmm dunno
<[TheBug]> was this written directly from image?
<corecode_> yes
<[TheBug]> btw generally the way armbian works is
<[TheBug]> its compressed and on first boot it decompresses and expands to full medium size
<corecode_> i think the lack of console output made me recheck connections while it booted
<[TheBug]> if you interupt that process and turn off the machine during t hat
<[TheBug]> it will corrupt
<corecode_> yes
<[TheBug]> I would suggest re-write the card and try again?
<[TheBug]> then if still issue say here and we can see if we can figure something else out
<corecode_> yep, i'm also changing the uboot env file
<corecode_> hm, still no kernel boot output
<Werner> Make sure to verify the sd card burn
<corecode_> yea it was the lack of output during boot
<Werner> Okay
<corecode_> i set console=both in armbianEnv.txt, but i still didn't get any output
Hokedli has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<[TheBug]> hmm
<[TheBug]> corecode_: have you tried an slightly older version to see if its something in the recent releases? I don't think there are a whole lot using that board, so possible there is an issue in new version and it hasn't been noted?
<corecode_> it's possible i don't know how this armbianEnv.txt stuff works
<corecode_> i changed it to console=serial, and now i out the output

<jophish> Hi all
<jophish> What determines if a patch is ever upstreamed?
<[TheBug]> hmm, I am not sure, maybe lanefu or Werner could field that for you when they are around.. they may be afk atm
Heisath has joined #armbian
<[TheBug]> jophish: would encourage you to idle here and wait, if not answered ask again in a few hours -- people are in different timezones here so not always available.
<lanefu> jophish: its just kind of the typical workflow here... typically the Maintainer for the kernel tree of the specific SoC merges it into their tree.. and it works its way up teh chain that way
<jophish> [TheBug]: thanks :)
<lanefu> most of our patches typically come from SoC trees that just haven't been merged all teh weay to mainline yet
<jophish> ah ok, so in general armbian doesn't take up the task of merging these.
<jophish> makes sense
<lanefu> right.... we're more of an aggregator than an implementar for that perspective
<jophish> in principle, what would stop me taking a patch in armbian and trying to get it upstreamed myself
<plntyk> kernel / upstream might have or enforce different rules for code quality or sign offs
<lanefu> jophish: your patience might stop you lol
<jophish> in my particular case, there's just one patch I'm using (the Helios4 GPIO/Fan patch), and it would be nice not to have to merge that all the time :)
<lanefu> nothing.. i mean if it makes sense for us to track a patch
<jophish> lanefu: haha, I was afraid of that
<lanefu> so yeah for helios4.. the kobolo people are active maintainers
<plntyk> i would think nothing - in OpenWrt you have loads of patches that are part of the project but some are not upstreamable because they are hacks - other dont apply or were rejected
<lanefu> for armbian
<lanefu> so accepting that patch into the armbian build shouldnt be a big deal.... as far as getting it merged to marvell soc tree.. they migh thave some advise or interest
<lanefu> *kobol
<[TheBug]> btw
<[TheBug]> for those using Armada 3700
<[TheBug]> is current mainline USB drivers working correct for USB3?
<Heisath> For Helios4 / Kobol, do have a link to the patch you want integrated?
<lanefu> no idea.. my helios is still on 4.19 kernel :P
<[TheBug]> I have an ancient kernel on my EBin 4.4.8 their orig and USB 3 is broken in their original kernel sources (ancient I know) but wondering if I moved to mainline it will be working correctly
<lanefu> ohh 3700 isebin
<lanefu> i need to dig mine out
<lanefu> i just kind of gave up on ebin
<lanefu> since it was causing everyone so much frustration
<lanefu> didn't deliver on the dream
<jophish> lanefu: mine too :)
<[TheBug]> I have many of them and I use them in production but I don't use Armbian for it yet cause I wasn't able to prove stability
<[TheBug]> II currently have v4, v5 and v7 boards
<[TheBug]> v4 SPI died on me though and has a fun coil whine for some reason when powered
<[TheBug]> so I actively run v5 and v7
<[TheBug]> lanefu: just an FYI as I didn't think this would be the case, but v7 brings a LARGE improvment in performance and stability
<jophish> I've rebased it on linux master today and there's just one small conflict
<jophish> however I've not tested it
<jophish> I was also quite surprised to find my name in 'git log' for that file :)
<lanefu> [TheBug]: really.. i thought the v7 were worse
<[TheBug]> lanefu: but they are a rip off to buy cause they force you to buy their case now, instead of just t elling you it needs some type of thermal disipation (heatsink) they instead force you to buy the case as it has a built in aluminum piece in top that acts as a heatsiunk for SoC
<Heisath> [TheBug]: And you want the patch upstream or just in current?
<[TheBug]> I hate the SATA adapter on v7 though
<[TheBug]> its shitty they changed that imo
<[TheBug]> Heisath: I think mixed convo here, sorry, jophish was one inquiring about patches, I started a related but different conversation, sorry for being confusing
<Heisath> oh wait I misread jophish was originally asking
<Heisath> jophish: Whats your goal with the patch?
<[TheBug]> lanefu: if you ever want to mind meld on testing EBin let me know and I can plan out some time to both help you get things working if any issue and also to test stuff on my side if needed, just let me know if you have an interest, alsways nice to have someone else who is interested in the board to bounce issues off
<jophish> Heisath: Ideally I'd like to upstream it. At the moment it's the only patch I need to apply on my system and it would be nice to remove the burden of rebasing that ever time I update the kernel
<Heisath> So youre building the kernel yourself not using armbian build script?
<jophish> exactly
<[TheBug]> lanefu: my biggest issue is I went and plugged a USB 3.0 to SATA adapter into Ebin on original stable kernel I have and it resulted in even when the kernel announced superspeed only going a handiapped 480Mbps (wouldn't exceed 15M/sec in any transfer)
<jophish> I'm on NixOS(!)
<Heisath> I will ask the Kobol guys about it. They don't seem go check the irc often, but I'll relay it. Can't promise anything though.
<[TheBug]> lanefu: I want to know if that persists in mainline or was fixed and works correct basically
<jophish> Heisath: that would be very kind indeed, thanks!
<jophish> Heisath: please pass on my complements to the kobol guys too if that's ok :)
<Heisath> done. Will probably answer in a day or so. They're probably sleeping rn
<jophish> Sure, I'm in no hurry whatsoever
<jophish> Oh, they're in Singapore right?
<Heisath> yep
<jophish> me too, I ought to be sleeping as well
<[TheBug]> lanefu: the DDR4 and tha ability to run at 1.2GHZ for the EBin actually makes it almost 'feel' twice as fast and it gets bogged down less on IO based transactions (read: faster sata transfers) (I am basically using it as a NAS platform)
