<Paddy>
hello. i copied Armbian_20.02.1_Bananapi_buster_current_5.4.20.img with dd to a sd-card and on first boot the system hangs after setting the root password
<lanefu>
mrueg: any other updates you wanna push beefore I merge
<Paddy>
after 30 minutes of waiting i turned the power off and booted again but the system ran a strange scipt and froze again
<Paddy>
whats the matter there?
<mrueg>
lanefu: not planned today
<lanefu>
Paddy: not sure what issue is... we ha a new release in may.. have you tried a newer image
drobo_00 has quit [Quit: drobo_00]
<Paddy>
on the way :)
<Paddy>
but it was really odd
<[TheBug]>
Paddy: what board?
<Paddy>
banana pi m1
<mrueg>
Thanks lanefu
<[TheBug]>
so A20?
<[TheBug]>
Paddy: if so let me know and I can download and test the image as well
<[TheBug]>
yeah I have an M1 in my box here
<[TheBug]>
if you link me to the image you downloaded I will grab it and boot it on my board
<Paddy>
nope, its worse. with the newest Focal image it does not boot at all
<Paddy>
no hdmi signal
<Paddy>
i guess the hardware is dead
ChriChri_ has joined #armbian
<[TheBug]>
eh?
<[TheBug]>
again if you want me to check link me the image I will grab it and burn and test
<[TheBug]>
if not.. so be it

<Paddy>
no, no. thats not worth your time
<Paddy>
i wanted to ask if its a known problem
<[TheBug]>
Won't know if someone else doesn't test I guess
<[TheBug]>
Paddy I can tell you the last one I know successfully worked that I have archived is Armbian_20.02.5_Bananapi_buster_current_5.4.26_desktop.img, but I will be testing that one here shortly
<Paddy>
that means my hardware is foobar
<lanefu>
Paddy: do you have any other storage devices attached to it
<Paddy>
just the keyboard via usb and the sd-card
<Paddy>
the tv via hdmi
<Paddy>
thats all
<[TheBug]>
its writing to sdcard now
<[TheBug]>
do you have a UART adapter?
<[TheBug]>
it is possible there is better debug on the console your not seeing
<Paddy>
nope
<[TheBug]>
should invest in one they are lik 1-6$ from china
<[TheBug]>
very useful to have
<[TheBug]>
suprised you didn't get one with the BPi m1
<[TheBug]>
k card written
<[TheBug]>
will boot in a moment
<[TheBug]>
booting now..
<[TheBug]>
got right into booting so far...
<[TheBug]>
Paddy
<[TheBug]>
really dumb question
<[TheBug]>
on first boot are you waiting for the sdcard resize to complete?
<[TheBug]>
if you pull the card out or turn it off while it's completing that
<Paddy>
i do the resize in gparted on the pc where i run dd
<[TheBug]>
you will have results like you were explaining
<[TheBug]>
you shouldn't do that
<[TheBug]>
there is an auto script on first boot
torv has joined #armbian
<[TheBug]>
that handles that
<[TheBug]>
it could be part of the issue
<[TheBug]>
cause I am at login prompt atm
<[TheBug]>
on that image
<Paddy>
maybe buy a new card and see before i dump the board
<[TheBug]>
burn the image
<[TheBug]>
put in board
<[TheBug]>
boot
<[TheBug]>
wait
<[TheBug]>
give it 5-10 minutes
<[TheBug]>
especially is you don't have an class 10 A1 card
<[TheBug]>
if you have a slower card could take a while
<[TheBug]>
but that image for sure boots up for me and I get to login
<[TheBug]>
I will login inital time and just confirm all works after reboot also
<Paddy>
wow
<[TheBug]>
k set passwords
<[TheBug]>
rebooting..
<Paddy>
i go shopping tomorrow. thanks for your help
<Paddy>
:))
<[TheBug]>
yep reached login again
<[TheBug]>
also
<[TheBug]>
go order your self a UART TTL adapter
<[TheBug]>
its worth having
<[TheBug]>
and can probably help you better debug your issuer
<[TheBug]>
cause if it continues after you get a new card of something the only way your going to be able to know if is if you have one
<[TheBug]>
cause it will output errors and such to console and not on HDMI
<Paddy>
roger! :D
<[TheBug]>
s/if is/what it is
<ArmbianHelper>
[TheBug] meant to say: cause if it continues after you get a new card of something the only way your going to be able to know what it is if you have one

now to figure out if display out over usb-c is possible at all (hardware specs says yes, but software??? no idea)
<IgorPec>
you only purchased hardware :)
<IgorPec>
with android that comes with this functionm might work
<IgorPec>
if this works on a modern kernel - probably not yetr
archetech has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<patrixl>
oh I See..
<patrixl>
didn't get it working on the Android image that' on the emmc or downloadable from their site though
<patrixl>
so I wonder
<patrixl>
well perhaps my nexdock is being finicky lol
<IgorPec>
perhaps usb-c is dump one?
<IgorPec>
like on RPi, powering only
<IgorPec>
i didn't explore this yet
<patrixl>
let me double-check, but I remember the reason I ordered it was because it specifically mentioned USB-C being DP
<IgorPec>
then sw support is not there yet. i hear they sort it out on Pinebook pro, but i din't see with my own eyes
<patrixl>
right
<patrixl>
" 1 x DP 1.2 (Display Port) , Supports 4K@60fps output" I swear this used to mention USB-C
<patrixl>
it does mention it separately from HDMI though, so no idea if that's a clue or something related to HDMI
c0rnelius has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<IgorPec>
without sw support, specs are pointless ;)
<patrixl>
true, but without the hardware, sw will never happen ;)
<IgorPec>
yeah, sure
<patrixl>
OTOH, definitely sw support is missing, even for usb3 over the usb-c port because kb/tracpkad weren't recognized until I connected them to the usb A port...
c0rnelius has joined #armbian
<IgorPec>
yeah, possible. well, this is just 1/1000 issues we see
<IgorPec>
that's the base problem :)
<patrixl>
haha
<patrixl>
yeah can't be easy to support all these boards
<patrixl>
I can be adventurous, I ordered 2 Opi4bs :)
<patrixl>
ok , so to make use of that pull request, I'd just have to check it out in my git clone , and build "current" for the opi4, no other option required?
<IgorPec>
checkout to branch AR-312 and build
<ArmbianHelper>
AR-312 [Task] "Switch rockchip64 dev target to kernel 5.7" reported by Piotr Szczepanik at 2020-06-14. Status: To Do
<patrixl>
nice, will try that Igor!
* patrixl
cancels his current build
<IgorPec>
beware that it was not never tested on hardware :)
<IgorPec>
i am still sorting out code
<patrixl>
yes, adventure awaits
<IgorPec>
DEV branch
<IgorPec>
when selecting build target with tools
<patrixl>
oh ok, gotcha
<patrixl>
here goes nothing, build started!
<patrixl>
just the kernel would suffice, right, or should I build the whole image to go with it? (currently have the "current" focal desktop image running)
<IgorPec>
kernel is enough, yes
<patrixl>
cool

<patrixl>
the good news is, the dev 5.7.x kernel boots, but no display over usb-c lol
<ikmaak>
i am looking to get SPI working on the NanoPiM4/Rockpro64, but cannot find good instructions. would anyone here know?
<patrixl>
well, in the meantime, let me see what else I can get done with this orange pi, and I'll try to see how I can help getting this usb-c going, but kernel dev is as of yet beyond me lol
<patrixl>
I can test and provide feedback though!
