ztir: if you have installed adb you can check if your usb (after enabling usb debugging) is working or not by running 'adb devices'. if it shows you no device detected, then you have installed invalid usb software/ or has a bad usb cable. if not then, you can search for `SCH-I500 rooting` in xda forums. you don't have to keep reposting here, they can kick you out ;-)

I followed the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693 (prerequisite to install cm10.1) and flashed with cwm 6.0.2.7 over the official 4.0.4 rom, after that the phone wasn't going to Recovery mode or booting up. apparently the download mode is working. so i flashed cwm 5.5.0.4 and now it is able to boot into recovery and able to boot up(into stock rom). so my QN: is that the MMC-SUPERBRICK-BUG cod3workx mentioni

I think you can, but I would recommend you get CM ROM Mananger from Play, then update CWM from there. I found it the easiest way to make sure CWM is up to date.

i am assuming that if the firmware contains a "system.img" file then I use the --system switch.. and if it contains a "factoryfs.img" then I use the --factoryfs switch (even though they are really both the /system files) Im not sure why they are different switches.

when I select "recovery" it doesnt always go into recovery

but if i select the radio buttons a few times, like between recovery and download mode, then it seems to do it

like the variable doesnt get set to reboot into recovery unless you click a few timews
