<leventel> guys, on OrangePi3 I've tested the reboot procedure on previous images
<leventel> 20.02.1 was slightly better, it could reboot 2 times of 5 trials
<leventel> on 19.11.5 the issue exists as well
<Werner> Have you tested nightly?
<leventel> not yet
<leventel> I tried 20.08
<Werner> Which is nightly atm, comes with 5.7.x kernel
<leventel> [TheBug] asked me to test earlier releases
<leventel> 20.08 has 5.7.15

<martinayotte_> TheBug: leventel: I don't have any reboot issue with my own OPi3 running sunxi-dev 5.8.0. Also, I didn't have any issue with previous 5.7.y ... Maybe hardware issue ?
<Werner> Megi recently updated the 5.8 branch to 5.8.2 btw.

<lanefu> lol
<lanefu> dude my client has already realized their in-progress kubernetes implementation is too complicated
<ArmbianTwitter> @armbian (armbian): @Poddingue @RunsWithPencil @Raspberry_Pi That's @Olimex Lime 2 running @armbian - more advance, efficient and (geeky) cooler. Also a hardware where we actually hosted the project when it was a small side project / baby born. Was added to this box later. https://t.co/5cjrAaTp4t (19s ago)

<IgorPec> werner
<IgorPec> you know id of us shop?
<Werner> Nope
<Werner> You have to login to it to see its id
<IgorPec> i can't. passed to tonymac
<IgorPec> lanefu
<Werner> 100935806
<Werner> And tell Tony he was lazy :P
<IgorPec> why?:)
<IgorPec> tnx
<Werner> Did not change the password after I logged out as I told him ^^
<IgorPec> haah
<Werner> eth01, you there?
<eth01> Hii
<Werner> Hey, maybe you can help me (or us) out. At the moment I have spread my bouncers and bots for armbian across various of my private servers and at least one of them will go offline in two month. Maybe you could help me/us out with a small virtual machine? :)
<eth01> yeah, sure
<eth01> what spec?
<Werner> Um, quite low. 1 core, 1gb memory and 20gb space are enough I think.
<eth01> ok :), I will do this evening - I am on BST time
<Werner> CEST here ;)
<Werner> besides an ipv4 (can be dirty, do not want to send emails from it) a small ipv6 subnet would ne nice to add a few vhosts for irc bots/bncs like I already have but this is purely optional

<lanefu> IgorPec: reviewing and editing
<IgorPec> great, tnx ... images are not yet uploaded, tomorrow
<lanefu> IgorPec: done editing....... sooo do we need to document any breaking changees or "don't upgrade X"
<IgorPec> not all people read docs, so :(
<IgorPec> i would add a note to forums and perhaps expose it in this documents
<IgorPec> not sure if we can do more than that
<lanefu> are there still scenarios where the update causes board not to boot?
<IgorPec> you mean except odroid n2?
<IgorPec> and c4
<IgorPec> n2 actually boots but without network, while c4 hangs at bootloader
<IgorPec> perhaps we expose that with linking directly to Jira
leventel has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<lanefu> hmmm do we have any way to prevent them from apt upgrading to the new stuff?
<lanefu> i don't think we can handle any more gripes about N2 than we're already getting :)
<IgorPec> adding [[ $BOARD == odroid ]] && exit 0 to the kernel preinst script?
<DigitalMan1983_> hi folks, was wondering if armbian build script can make use of a separately built U-boot?
<IgorPec> you mean just to build u-boot without kernel?=
<lanefu> yeah $BOARD == odroid... and is there a way to also check existing kernel version so thats it only stops stuff only than v20.08 from upgrading/installing
<lanefu> i think he means the other way around
<lanefu> wants to bring his own u-boot
<DigitalMan1983_> yes correct
<lanefu> DigitalMan1983_: whats wrong with armbian's u-boot?
<DigitalMan1983_> unfortunately does not have the options to configure LCD
<DigitalMan1983_> Olimex's U-boot incorporates into boot menu
<IgorPec> aha
<IgorPec> then point to their sources
<DigitalMan1983_> and i haven't had much luck modifying boot.cmd or armbEnv.txt
<IgorPec> override variables for Uboot source ... check manual a bit, i think its there
<DigitalMan1983_> armbian manual?
<IgorPec> docs.armbian.com , yes
<IgorPec> for doing this kind of things, not sure if its well documented, but that would be the first start
<DigitalMan1983_> I see USE_GITHUB_UBOOT_MIRROR in the build options guide
<IgorPec> that's general
<DigitalMan1983_> yeah, seems to pull the same source from an alternate location
<IgorPec> one can use github or denx server
<IgorPec> same source, ofc, its a mirror
<DigitalMan1983_> aha, If file userpatches/lib.config exists, it will be called and can override the particular kernel and u-boot versions.
<IgorPec> thats because from some location one could be very slow and you change
<IgorPec> exactly!
<DigitalMan1983_> awesome, thanks Igor
<IgorPec> also for sources location
<IgorPec> and patch location, anything you want
Hokedli has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<DigitalMan1983_> additionally, it would appear that Olimex provides a way to update U-boot in SPI flash over USB-OTG using dfu
<IgorPec> ideally would be to port all those fancy features to armbian
<DigitalMan1983_> Olimex has recently moved away from Armbian for their builds, and now have their own build script
<IgorPec> yes, i noticed
<DigitalMan1983_> unfortunately, customization is not documented and there's no sense really in building an image instead of downloading a pre-built one if you can't modify the kernel :P
<IgorPec> probably we would need to improve it, rather than wasting time for supporting hw features
<IgorPec> well, its a lot of work maintaining such system
<DigitalMan1983_> yeah, I guess they just want more control over future support
<IgorPec> our focus is probably a bit too general
<IgorPec> strange is that nobody bringed this up or asked if we can meet up
<IgorPec> suggestions are always welcome
<DigitalMan1983_> so far I can only sing praises for Armbian build scripts
<IgorPec> thank you! in the name of all contributors
<DigitalMan1983_> I know I can come here and usually get a really good answer when I run into trouble with something and coupled with the automation and configurability, I'm pretty happy that it spits out an image that boots to a command prompt.
<IgorPec> we have dark times when it doesn't ;)
<DigitalMan1983_> I don't know if I've mentioned my history but I came from an RK3188 with kernel 3.0
<IgorPec> olimex board?
<DigitalMan1983_> yup
<IgorPec> oh, i got it somewhere but we haven't deal with it
<DigitalMan1983_> had to have a specific OS to build in, certain toolchain, and it all had to be downloaded and built manually
<IgorPec> that's still present if you get some exotic
<DigitalMan1983_> I just read that they have stopped manufacturing the RK3188 and therefore Olimex is no longer supporting it (arguable as to whether they ever fully did)
<IgorPec> yeah, rk3188 was never very well supported, but i guess at least kernel functions are mainlined
<IgorPec> probably
<IgorPec> my first rockchip was 3288
<DigitalMan1983_> the first time I ran compile.sh and it started automatically downloading not only the proper build tools but all of the dependencies as well, I was floored
<IgorPec> hehe
<DigitalMan1983_> what did it for me with the rockchip was when I stumbled upon the A64 which was about 5 dollars more
<IgorPec> the idea is that it stays simple if you only wants to build latest image, but you can customize everything if you want.
<DigitalMan1983_> with twice the RAM, 4 times the flash, and a 64-bit processor
<DigitalMan1983_> yup! the build options guide is like my bible now
<IgorPec> a64 is the first 64bit from allwinner, but from todays perspective a bit old
<DigitalMan1983_> whereas currently the README.md for the build tools from Olimex is blank.
<IgorPec> if you find something worth improving in the system, welcome to contribute
<IgorPec> olimx build tool is not a competitive build tool :)
<IgorPec> they have their resons - to cover up cases we can't
<DigitalMan1983_> great! I'll be working to implement a touch panel and audio so you'll most likely be hearing from me :)
<IgorPec> that's great
<DigitalMan1983_> also the IRC support for Armbian is tremendous
leventel has joined #armbian
<DigitalMan1983_> Olimex you leave a message and sometimes between 1AM and 8AM you get a response....of course they're in Bulgaria and are on a different time table
<DigitalMan1983_> I will say that they are very responsive in their forums
<IgorPec> support is expensive in any term
<IgorPec> we mainly rely on forums / community since just a few people can't cover up
<IgorPec> on private i don't even try to answer
<IgorPec> that would solo took me 5-10h per day. Can't afford
<DigitalMan1983_> wow
<IgorPec> peopel approach with a serious technical problems
<DigitalMan1983_> I guess when you support as many boards as Armbian supports you get a crazy amount of requests
<IgorPec> we have many users and certain % of them just pushing all the time
<DigitalMan1983_> do you currently have anyone testing the nightly builds on Lime/Olinuxino A64?
<IgorPec> only automated tests
<DigitalMan1983_> would it be helpful at all to have someone doing it manually?
<IgorPec> currently i don't know if there is anything on the screen :)
<IgorPec> the rest i have
<DigitalMan1983_> I'll admit I'm still pretty green but would like to start contributing once I get myself set
<IgorPec> or at least some data - we are running this https://github.com/armbian/autotests
<IgorPec> ideally all boards should be tested for important functions on every fw change
<IgorPec> support hardware that would allow SD card emulation and power switching is still in the works
<DigitalMan1983_> cool
<DigitalMan1983_> my areas of interest currently are with video and audio
<IgorPec> those are most difficult areas, most of the routines are considered experimental
<DigitalMan1983_> hopefully with any luck tonight I'll have the LCD portion of it sorted out, then using the kernel configuration enable the AR1021 touch screen controller that Olimex hasn't implemented yet in their images
<IgorPec> good luck!
<DigitalMan1983_> thanks!
